When I saw that MidLand had a place with Arepas we just had to try it. We are sooo happy we did!! We tried their combination sampler and it was amazing. I went in here with high expectations and they were partially met. The food was good I got the pelua, I was disappointed that they where out of the coleslaw and the waitress did not let us know. I arrived at 11:30 and didn't get my food until 12:15 which put us in a time crunch while eating. Also it is not a lot of food for the serving. My hubby and I came here to try the food because we had never had Venezuelan food before. I was really glad I came. Being a person who has worked in food service as long as I have I would recommend a few things. Ambiance Your place lacks ambiance, it feels generic. Ethnic foods are an experience, the sights, the smells, the sounds, the tastes. If you are from Venezuela close your eyes and picture your homeland and make your place reflect that. Service 1. Always have someone at the door even when not busy because coming into an empty place and not being greeted by a smiling face makes you want to walk out. 2. Suggestive sell at the table and be very familiar with the products. Upsell where appropriate. Most people won't know what to get at your restaurant so guide them. Food 1. The plantain chips are a bit bland I don't know what would make them more flavorful but thats an area to work on 2. The arepa are good, not doubt about it I would have some other heavier dinner offerings to bolster the evening business. Marketing 1. The only reason I knew you existed was through yelp beef up your pictures on yelp. Your Facebook page seems only dedicated to your catering and to go not the restaurant. Whoa!! Completely different cuisine. The sweet friend plantains were delicious as an appetizer. The arapes are best described as a doughier gordita. Amazing and with flavors that just hint at being familiar. What a nice change of pace for a different style of South American cuisine than anything else we have around here. read more

Today I decided it was time for me to finally try Cafe Unique's food after a few months of following their page on facebook. I didn't know what I wanted so I called them up and asked for a recommendation on a lunch to-go order. They happily suggested a few things and I ended up ordering a fried sweet plantain appetizer and the La Pelva arepa which is filled with shredded beef and cheddar cheese. They informed me it would be ready in 5 (what?!?) minutes so I hopped in my car and rushed over. Once I arrived my food was already cooked and packaged for me so I paid and went about my way. I was very impressed when I got back to work that my order had been packaged appropriately so that every thing stayed warm and nothing spilled all over me or my car. All of the food was delicious. The plantain appetizer was wonderful and the perfect portion to share with friends. I have only ever had fried plantains in Costa Rica so it was nice to be able to experience it for lunch in 'ol Midland, TX. The arepa came with a slaw, some tostones (which I think are fried not sweet plantains) and two sauces, orange and green. I can't remember what she told me was in each, but I tried both and preferred orange because green contains cilantro, which isn't my fave. The arepa was delicious and I thought the shredded beef was tender and very flavorful. I can't wait to go back for lunch with my husband and share a few varieties of the arepas. One was enough to fill me up so it would take me a while to make it through the menu on my own. :) I work in downtown and I can get to Cafe Unique and back with food in tow faster than I can get through the Chick-Fil-A drive through so I will definitely be calling in more orders in the future. read more

I would have never thought I could find a Venezuelan place in Midland. I was ecstatic when my coworkers and I did. The place is clean and nice, the service was fast and the food delicious. There are plenty of arepas, empanadas and other Venezuelan plates to choose from. The flavors were quite authentic. I had the la sureña arepa and it was delicious. I'd recommend getting here by 11:30 or before noon for lunch, this place got packed after noon. read more

Very good food! It felt authentic and the cashier made some excellent recommendations for us.

I love the arepas. Similar to a gordita but the seasoning and sauces are different. It's a fried cornmeal pouch filled with meat, veggies, cheese, etc. The tostones, fried plantains, are good. I always ask for extra. The owner is nice and quite sassy. She just informed me that she just recently started to open in the evenings Mon-Wed until 8pm. I had the pabellon plate and I was not impressed with how tiny the arepa was. And it was cut in half. Seriously? Welcome to Midland T.X. Who doesn't want a full round arepa full of masa? Instead, I received half of a small hard arepa. Plenty of white rice. The shredded beef was very tasty. There was hardly any black beans but they were well seasoned and flavorful. We tried this out based on the reviews of other Yelpers and loved it. The tequenos (cheese stuffed fried bread) made for a wonderful appetizer. My wife had the Pabellon Arepa and I had the Rey Reina arepa. The texture of the arepa bread was fantastic- crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Both of our arepas had the carne mechada (shredded beef) in them, which was delicious. We really loved the fried plantains that came with the arepas but the cole slaw was just OK. The restaurant itself is cozy and eclectic. Our waitress was a colorful character. Other reviewers have called her rude, but I would disagree. She is a bit rough around the edges, but was very attentive and helpful with the menu. No complaints from me. Serving sizes were generous, but the price seems a bit high to me. Then again, since nobody else in town serves this type of food. When you are the only game in town, I suppose you can justify a premium price. We decided to try this restaurant over the weekend bc we have tried the Venezuelan food truck by Havertys. So my husband was eager to try this restaurant to try more foods. First of all the restaurant is very nice in the new shopping center. Well we walk in and the lady at the counter does not greet us because she is on her phone. We look over the menu excited to try something new. Well she finally stands up and acknowledges us asking if we are ready to order. She was rude and wanted to get us out the way. I tried ordering one of the hamburgers but they were out of pineapple I think. She then tells me to order the other hamburger but I tell I don't want ham in it. She replies just take it out. I order something can't remember the name but she replies you know that doesn't have meat. We order, we get our food, and the food was okay. I'm not going to judge it on our first timing going. Ive seen the reviews and the food seems to be great. Now the service was horrible. As we are eating the server was on her phone the whole time and it was loud. While on the phone, she stops and yells at us to see if we are doing ok. I don't reply because who likes to be yelled at across the restaurant? Wonderful food!!! The cuisine is Venezuelan and oh so yummy (one of the owners is Venezuelan as well as one of the cooks.) My husband and I shared two of the sampler arepa baskets. It came with 3 split arepas, a slightly spicy salad/slaw and plantain chips. It was a ton of food but we managed to eat every bit of it! It was too good. They serve them with a homemade green cream sauce and a red mayo-ish sauce (I will have to find out the proper names on our next visit.) Another place to add to our list of lunch regulars!! Ok, so i've been probably half a dozen times more and each time they have been open. So, I think I can say they finally have fixed my only issue with the place. My gf loves this place and I give her hell about always wanting to go here, but I have a dirty secret... I'd want to go once per week even if she didn't like it. Although the food was good the lady taking our order had terrible service. When I walked in she shouted at me from across the restraint and pointed to the table yelling "over there". While I was waiting for my party she came over and and briskly asked what to drink and was rude the entire time. Many of the things on the menu were not available, which is fine except for the fact she said it so rudely when we asked. When my party arrived I warned them about her and they thought I was over exaggerating until she came to speak to them and they were shocked at her rude behavior. If she's not a people person fine but then she should be working in the back as she did mentions she cooks most of the food. read more
