We loved this place! They let us know the menu prices had gone up recently and they were still waiting for a new sign board. Everything we got was so fresh and authentic. They had several vegetarian options and were even able to make one of our meals vegan by making it "sin queso" (no cheese). Visited here for the first time yesterday (Friday) for lunch! My boyfriend has been in Midland for 2 years and always wanted to try it. Now that I live here, he had someone who was willing to try a new food with. They were fairly busy, which made me happy during this time. I ordered Rey Reina and reallllllyyy enjoyed my meal! I would highly recommend it, and you only need one- it is stuffed! Another awesome aspect is that they bring out 3 different cold sauces, salsa, mayo ish and tartar. Fire. I am a gordita fan but never had an arepas but this is the Venezuelan version I am told. I had just a single "De Pabellon" arepa. Chunky, savory, tender beef in sauce with a slaw and cheese, black beans on a corn pita pocket of sorts. They put out three bottles of sauces -- a light green avocado crema garlic thing that I could drink by itself , a slightly spicy crema , and more of an Asian style chili garlic. I couldn't eat it fast enough. A bit pricy at $14 but comes with a big slice of fried plantain that was crispy and not greasy. They have plates which seems to be a much better deal -- most of same components but 15-16$. I will be back. On a last note it is a mess to eat but a fork solves that. My coworkers and I decided to try this place out for lunch today on a Friday. We got there around 1130 ish and it wasn't too busy about 3 other tables before us. We ordered the Tequenos, Testones, and Plantains to share for appetizers, 3 diff arepas to share, and churros for dessert. I like the La Surena arepa it had chicken chorizo, and avocado in it. There are 3 diff sauces they give you on the table, my favorite was their cilantro mayo one and the salsa one had a good spice to it. The churros were good, but I wish they were a little softer. It was too crispy for my liking, but they give you a caramel sauce to dip in and it was drizzled over with chocolate. We had the sugar cane - lime drink forget the name of it. For the three of us our bill was about $50 bucks. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food came out fast too. This place is pretty casual and you can do to go orders and pick up. They have a little futon couch in the dining area for customers to wait for their orders. Overall, the food wasn't bad, If you want to try some diff food other than tex mex etc they have here, try this place out. If I go back I want to try their other arepas and empanadas. This was the first time my husband and I tried Venezuelan food. The food was okay but I loved the atmosphere! I loved the art they had all over the walls and it was lively with venezuelan music in the background. We started off with the appetizer sampler. I could probably pass on these because everything was fried and to greasy for me. For my entree I got the La Surena Arepas. I love spicy food and I was sold on the "spicy chimi-churri sauce" but I didn't taste any spice. The arepa was a little to hard for me. The pictures definitely made it looked soft and fluffy. But the chorizo and chicken was good. My husband got the Pebellon Criollo and he thought it was okay. I do love how they have all the different sauces! My fav was the green creamy sauce. The food was a little overpriced. For an appetizer and two meals was about $40. But It was nice to try something different and now we can say we have tried Venezuelan food! read more

I didn't want to go too crazy on what to order so I ordered a couple of empanadas, tequenos and 2 arepas which were all super delicious! To my surprise there was more food than I ordered (thanks shellie!) Also, I was surprised at how big the empanadas were! I loved the seasoning on the tostones and my favorite arepas was the santos with avocado and cheese. Everything was super yummy and was ready when I got there! The owner Gabriel, greeted us warmly and gave us great recommendations when we asked. We have friends from Venezuela, and are a bit familiar with the food but wanted to try something new. We started Venezuela Limonade (lime juice, cane sugar and water). I ordered the Patecones plate. I'm obsessed with plantains and this plate had them prepared both ways - sweet and savory - yum! Shouldn't be yelled at for that when it wasn't explained or even offered to me to order appetizers first. I am updating my review to 5 stars. This is now one of my favorite restaurants in town. I have tried the La Pelua (shredded beef and cheese arepa). I can't decide if I prefer the beef or chicken, but if I had a bigger stomach... it would be both. The last time I came here with a group and we tried the guava cheese fried things. (the correct name is eluding me at the moment). I am usually not a fan of sweet and cheese together, but these were delicious. As were the churros we shared for dessert. It was, hands down, the best one I have ever had and I have had plenty. I finished with a plate of wonderfulness aka Pebellon Criollo. My wife and I went today to the location in Midkiff and we 100 % regret it. Horrible costumer service by the cashier, she seemed annoyed by our presence and even yelled at us, throw the food on the table and everything. We are bilingual and she seemed annoyed when we talked in Spanish with her, even tho is a "Venezuelan" place. When we asked about the menu they pretty much didn't had anything. Let's not talk about how overpriced it is, if the food was ok that's not an issue. The tequeños came back cold, pale, so was the Arepas, they where definitely not done, the cheese wasn't even melted. The yucas were old, hard to bite them. We end up throwing everything away of how disappointing it was. If you're looking for a nice Venezuelan food place, this is not the one. Cafe Unique - Pabellon Criollo con Guarapo! - Venezuelan Near Me - Midland, Texas

I was pretty surprised to hear that there was a Venezuelan place here. Predictably, they specialize in arepas. For anyone who's unfamiliar, arepas are essentially Venezuelan gorditas. The masa shell had a crispy exterior but soft interior, since it was really thick. I ordered the pernil (shredded pork shoulder). It was stuffed with a load of meat but not a ton else to complicate the flavors. It got a little old and generic after a few bites, even despite using the three types of sauces on the table. My favorite was the green sauce, even though it was spinach based. I think the traditional version is supposed to be cilantro-based. I really wish they had the cilantro sauce, because it adds such freshness to what's often a pretty heavy cuisine. Portion sizes are a bit tricky to balance. You can order a single arepa, which comes with a few fried plantains on the side, but it may not be enough to fill you up (coming from me, who's a pretty petite gal). There are sampler plates of three arepas, which is wayy too much food for a single person. My suggestion would be to order an arepa per person, or split a combo plate between two, and order some appetizers to supplement. We tried the tequenos, which are essentially mozzarella sticks with egg roll wrapping instead of breading. If you like cheese sticks, I'd highly recommend. Just try not to think too hard about the calories. read more

Authentic Venezuelan food in the heart of Midland Texas. And extremely good. I had the opportunity of enjoying an off-menu sampling of the Arepas which is a gordita stuffed with your choice of fillings. I chose the chef's favorite (shredded beef, cheese, black beans, plantains), the waitress's favorite (chicken, chorizo, cheese), and a simple ham and cheese. I ate half of each and am stuffed. The flavor profile are as expected: bold but not spicy. The Gordita is made with cornmeal and is more substantial than a tortilla providing structure and texture for the filling. My favorite was the shredded beef that was packed with its own flavor but had to share the stage with sweet plaintains and the texture of the back beans. Cheese marries the ingredients. The decor is scattered but not unappealing. White modern couches are separated by traditional tables by two high-boys. Red walls serve as backdrop for a collage and printed definitions or menus. There are several good restaurants in this area but don't forget about Cafe Unique. read more

The woman preparing my order gave me a call to let me know they didn't have certain items so I told her to just give me whatever they suggest. BEST DECISION EVER.
