Now, considering Birmingham is the UK's second largest city, you'd think that it would be full of lovely fine dining experiences. Well, you'd be wrong and I was struggling when the few Michelin starred places were fully booked So what's the next best thing to a Michelin starred restaurant? A restaurant run a chef who used to run a Michelin starred restaurant! The chef-patron Andy Waters won a Michelin star when he ran a restaurant of the same name in Henley-in-Arden. He has upped sticks to open this restaurant in central Birmingham in July last year and the Michelin people have already been expressing an interest in rating his new restaurant The restaurant is quite cozy but beautifully decorated in a modern style with an eye for detail extending from interesting curved light arrangements hanging from the ceiling to flowers in the bathrooms. After an afternoon's exertions on the slopes, we were hungry and opted for the tasting menu, which included 7 courses with coffee and half a bottle of water included in the price. There was a choice offered for 4 courses 1. The amuse bouche was a cup of parsnip and apple soup. My friend summed it up perfectly by saying it was a taste of Christmas in a cup 2. I opted for Cornish crab with crispy king prawn & salmon tartare for my first course. The Cornish crab tasted very fresh and was accented with some caviar. The salmon tartare could have done with a foil, perhaps something with a bit of texture for contrast. The crispy king prawn was so lovely I even ate the deep fried tail, which flummoxed my friends when they found my plate to be bare! My sister said her carpaccio of beef with ricotta & parmesan cheese, rocket leaves & sweetened red pepper married flavours together perfectly 3. While the others enjoyed wonderfully sweet seared scallops with almonds, sultanas & caper butter sauce, I couldn't resist the seared foie gras with poached pear & spiced Muscat sauce. A good choice with decadently rich liver being offset by the sweet pear and sauce. 4. I think the restaurant undersold our universal choice for main course by describing it as "Jimmy Butler's free range pork with apples, calvados & a confit of savoy cabbage". Once the maitre d' had clarified that this was pork prepared in 4 ways - black pudding, slow braised cheek, pan roasted loin and roasted belly, the monkfish alternative was quickly dismissed. My favourite preparation was the braised cheek, which went very well with the black pudding it was sitting on 5. The cheese course was a deep fried ball of goat's cheese with a slice of truffle and honey. I love truffle and I felt it was a bit drowned out by the goat's cheese, so I ate my slice separately! 6. Our pre-dessert of passion fruit jelly was topped with a fruit mixture. Nice palate cleanser 7. The kitchen was unable to offer the desserts on the tasting menu and so we were given free choice of the dessert menu to choose from. We all chose different dishes to be able to share different things. My poached pear was lovely. My sister's tiramisu was a deconstructed version of the Italian classic shaped into a chocolate box. Lesley B's chocolate fondant didn't quite have the molten interior expected while the last dessert was a trio including mango sorbet. Some lovely petit fours accompanied coffee. The ingredients in the dishes included some real treats - caviar and truffle to name 2. The presentation was also top class. A couple of minor technical slips but a most enjoyable meal Service was lovely and we were able to chat quite a lot with the maitre d' to find out a bit more about the restaurant and its history. I await with interest to see if the Michelin guide will reward them in January

The restaurant is in a converted Georgian building and feels quite homely. The restaurant itself is in a large extension that's quite modern, but warm and comfortable. I started with the seasonal cocktail -apple and cinnamon with grand mariner. Tasty but nothing special-I'm spoilt these days! Our meal was a set five courses, which I found out by phoning up to ask. However, when we were eventually seated and asked if we wanted the wine flight to go with the meal, I asked if I could see the wine list and the menu too first-thought that was a little odd. We sat for a good while and initially we felt a little forgotten about. Nevertheless once the food started coming it was great. I don't think I would have chosen half of it, but it's good to try new things, especially when you know the chef! We chose a nice bottle of Austrian red which went surprisingly well with each course. A fun evening! I would like to go back on a 'normal' night too, although I feel it's a place for special occasions.

There is a car park on site outside although driving into it is one of the scariest driving moments I have had; I drive up the hill, onto the drive and to find the cars parked tightly on a curve. I try and find a space amongst whilst a. not marking my car and b. not hitting any number of the very expensive cars parked here on a week day lunchtime. You can imagine the food in a Michelin star restaurant and of course that's subjective but almost always will get 4 stars from me anyway. For a closet vegetarian (not a huge meat eater) I don't always get on with most Michelins because of their French influence and therefore little or no vegetarian menu. So I often end up having fish as a starter and main course as I did here, as wonderful as it was. The other issue is the desserts tend to be chocolate or fruit based neither of which I am a fan of either but I they bought out a sorbet/ice cream concoction for me. The food as you would expect is perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth goodness. However, to me that's about 60% of the experience, the rest is the service. From the minute I walked in, I a guided to the sofa and offered a drink and then bought into the lounge to await my dining partner. After choosing from the menu, we are effortlessly taken to our table with a view and our knowledgeable and friendly waiter brings our starters promptly. The bill goes over the £100 mark for two but even if it's not your thing, I feel it it's worth doing at least once.

The staff were amazing offering us drinks and water and seating the party of 5 instantly. The menu is a choice of 2 set menus a 3 course for £39 or a 5 course for £59. We opted for the 3 and I chose steak tartar ad a starter and then beef as deserve and a passion fruit and vodka Desert. The food was good, my desert wasn't to my liking but that's not to say it wasn't great and the belly pork ordered by someone else gave me instant food envy. Service was amazing and the wine selection is great I would say a 3 course meal with wine will set you back around £60 per person so not to bad considering the quality of the food. Definitely something to check out I would say a great special occasion restaurant.

The place is immaculate.....like SO fresh! We were walked upstairs by the manager after checking our reservation and taken to a table. The resturant is vast with many small rooms giving a cozy feel. We went into an upstairs room with large glass windows overlooking the canal and were sat down.....slight gripe....the restaurant was pretty quiet where we were and we were sat right next to another woman that was eating alone even though there were other tables which would have allowed a little more space/room to chat about mildly inappropriate topics....haha....not a huge ine really just felt a little weird as there were other tables available. We both had the pre theatre menu which is pretty extensive and has a lot of good options. We both had the rabbit pate to start....it was good but don't think I would go for it again.....then I had the pork medallions for my main. The pork was beautifully cooked with a side of dauphinoise and seasonal veg. All amazing I must say...big shouts to the sauce on the whole plate which was rich and full of flavour. The other slight gripe I have is the slightly over attentive service while you are in the venue but im putting that down to everyone there being so keen to impress. I think you can let people relax a little....what you are doing is really good :) 5* will be back....100% try this place out ASAP.

I can honestly say I'm honoured to have visited here with another fellow yelper. I must admit I've never been a big enthusiast of French cuisine, purely because my knowledge in wines accompanying a meal is zero to none. However! This restaurant has opened my eyes once again to European because the food was fantastic and to top that, what makes the difference is the customer service making me and my friend feel like home in this wonderful feeling overlooking the canal. My meal consisted of the pre theatre menu with pork medallions and the chocolate torte dessert. The Pork Medallions was glazed with honey and mustard and layed with some sausage, mustard and pepper sauce with caramelised Apple. Such a combo makes a great mixture that your tastebuds just simply can't resist. The chocolate torte I thought was quite rich (not a massive chocolate fan so bear with me!) however, this was neutralised by the amazing black current ice cream produced from the restaurant chain itself. For an amazing price of £15 pp I can honestly say I feel like I robbed the restaurant for their hospitality. You have made me a very happy yelper Serena and I hope my tipped reached you. Absolutely beautiful restaurant and fantastic large outdoor dining area which is great on a nice sunny day dining by the canal. The food is always at a high standards and having eaten there several times now I can say I've eaten a lot from the main menu and have never had any problems whatsoever. The staff are attentive, polite and even spark into some friendly conversation which is nice. They have a reasonable lunch time offer for 2 course or three course meals. They also offer pre-theatre menus too. Can't fault the place.

You will find greenery running all upside the walls as well as a fantastic view of the canal. In the evening the ambience inside is also great. Reservations are available but you can usually get in without too much of a wait time. On this occasion I ordered a spinach and mushroom crepe which was fantastic! It's probably my favourite vegetarian dish that they do. It's a sensible portion that leaves you satisfied. For dessert I ordered the praline crepe which was again fantastic. You generally find with dessert crepes that they can do no bad no matter where your buying it from. Cotes crepes are above standard in terms of quality with a light pancake and not overly sweet praline feeling. For me in particular this restaurant shines in the summer. The cocktails are great and the dining experience is unique.

We both have small children so it is a definite bonus that they also have a selection of books and toys to keep them entertained. On this occasion we both had scrambled eggs, hers with bacon and mine with smoked salmon. I am usually quite particular about where j eat eggs as no one is usually able to make them how I like . However, the chef at Maison Mayci gets them right every time, and this time was no exception. I love this place and would definitely recommend to anyone.

I had lamb shank which was cooked to perfection and my wife went for the scallops and monkfish which she told me was the best shed had in a long time,we both shared a warm chocolate brownie with a small glass of dessert wine which complimented the richness of the chocolate to perfection! I had scallops raped in proceto, and my colleague had the veg soup. Both were tasty and well cooked the fish was tender and flavoursome the ham was crisp and and balanced well with the scallops, four scallops and a salad dressing My main course was Duck cooked pink with shaved root veg again flavesome and well balanced. When you first walk into this place you think, this is a bit small to be good, but eat your food then judge I was pleased with my food and so was my colleague. The store from the outside at certain points looks like you're going into a quiet, deficit building through a dark entrance and heavy door - there is some outdoor seating which is a nice area to sit in the city, however. After a few bad experiences with the Cafe Rouge brand at locations in Newcastle and Salford, I decided to call here after noticing a good brunch deal for £5.95 which included a good selection of items. The decor inside is a little old-fashioned but it can link into the contemporary French decor in parts you'd expect from a French chain restauraunt, from the same "company" who own and run Bella Itallia, one of the country's largest and most common Italian chains. I ordered a gluten-free breakfast, despite not saying "GO" on the menu which they use for items which can be modified to be gluten-free, I was told they could do it without the sausage - I don't know why this wasn't labelled on the menu if it was possible, relying on the guests to ask. My food quality was okay, it wasn't anything special and I did find the mushrooms to be a little slimy rather than seasoned, the bacon to be slightly chewy and fatty but the gluten-free bread was pretty good, the eggs could have been seasoned better but were okay and the beans were good, although a bigger portion of beans than a small pot would have been better. The staff seemed nice enough. A good, central location serving food at prices much lower than nearby competition, with a nice seating area to warrant a three-star rating with the value for money winning an extra star.
