Best Mediterranean meal I've had outside of Istanbul. Read the Yelp reviews and decided to come here for dinner. So glad I did. Sunday night and a $25 Special of app and entree or dessert and entree. I ordered the calamari and the mixed dinner of lamb, chicken and kofte. The calamari were good, served on rocket greens with an aioli. There weren't many, but I did mention the $25 special, right? They were well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The entree was divine. The meats, which were plentiful, came with the same rocket greens, a garlic hummus, and yoghurt dip. Usually kofte are dried and uninteresting; these were exactly the opposite: spiced wonderfully, and still moist. The chicken, likewise, was grilled with a little char on the outside, but juicy on the inside. The lamb (doner) were small bits that were a little tasteless, but cooked perfectly. The garlic hummus was aggressively garlic and served as a nice dip for the meats. So glad I believed the reviews and came here. Located smack bang in the heart of the CBD on Victoria Street, it has a nice east-meets-west ambience which is enhanced by the intimate scale of the restaurant. The menu is part Turkish, part Mediterranean. I'd recommend any of the grilled chicken dishes which come with lovely fresh salads, hummus and yogurt sauces. Enjoy with a nice white from the extensive wine list. Have never had a bad experience here, and it's equally suited to couples or groups. This small restaurant packs a lot of friendliness and flavor into a compact place. I stopped by for lunch and was warmly greeted. The lunch special offered my choice of five entrees at a discount, along with beverages at a discount I opted for the doner kebab. The plate that came out was arranged in a way that was different from what I was used to. The doner kebab was chopped into pieces and spread on top of rice. There was a tomato sauce drizzled on top along with a yogurt sauce; both were delicious. There was an unremarkable salad on the side, as well as dollops of both hummus and tzatziki. I put them both on the doner kebab, and they were absolutely delicious. This is a solid lunch choice in the CBD. read more

Great place for lunch. Friendly service and good food - had the mezze platter which had hummus, falafel, tzaziki, feta, olives, stuffed grape leaves and more, perfect for vegetarian peeps. The lamb shank was also very yummy and came in a huge portion. The midnight mixed plate was not as interesting as the other dishes. Tried the Greek salad, nothing to write home about. Usually love it but pretty sad, portion wise and ingredients. The veggies were in large pieces instead of diced and the kalamata olives were not good quality ones. I love these so I know my olives. Just not something I would order again from this location. Well wanted to try since a long time a nice Mediterranean restaurant, and I was not dissapointed . Lot of smiles during the services, the menu is pretty large and you have a great choice with mezze and also mixed grill. Both were really tasty and very fresh. I've been meaning to try Midnight Express for a long time now and finally got to go on Friday night when a friend had her birthday dinner there. We were a large group of 20 with some unexpected extras but they were very good about it and managed to fit us in around a large table at the back. For large groups they do a set menu of $20 for either entree and main or main and dessert (bargain). The service was excellent with the very friendly waiter coming to check regularly if we needed extra drinks. The food was what you would expect from a Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant. I had the mezze platter to start and the midnight mix for my main which had a little bit of everything. All the food was very tasty but I wasn't a huge fan of the lamb in my midnight mix, the chicken and kofte were delicious and definitely made up for it though. As it was a Friday night they had a belly dancer coming around the tables encouraging people to get up and dance. Overall I was very happy with food and service (especially price, such a good deal for large groups!). I would definitely go back again and would recommend for large groups. read more

Had dinner at this restaurant last night. The cafe is cozy and the staff very friendly and helpful. If only the food were as good as the service and atmosphere. I've lived in the Middle East and Mediterranean and have eaten my share of this cuisine - while the food was good it was far from the best I have ever eaten. Had the Moroccan Falafel plate which included falafel with a red sauce, hummus, tzatziki, salad, rice and garlic bread. The falafel, hummus, and tzatziki weren't bad but were all quite bland. The bright spot on the plate was the slice garlic bread, very tasty. My husband had the Mezza plate which included all of the items I had on my plate. We wanted something different, and since there doesn't seem to be ant NZ cuisine, and you can't eat Kiwi, we went with Turkey. The service was great, the food was amazing, and the wine selection was very nice. We had a couple of different mains so we could share to taste, both were excellent. The humus was very nice, and the baklava for dessert topped it off perfectly. (Sure I could take a star off for the lack of view, but it's not their fault they are building an underground train station in the middle of the street, so no way.) Midnight Express has been owned by the same family since 1989, so they know what they're doing and continue to do it well. The food is always good, fresh and full of flavour, and there's plenty of options to suit all palates - everything from a big meaty steak to more delicate vegetarian options. The dining room is cosy, warm and well lit, which is a good thing in a restaurant! The waiters/waitress are very polite and welcoming, come in and serve you at the right time and provide you recommendation on food as well.
