"Definitely not a goner"…read more.. Lately, I've become more & more charmed by everything French. It might just be an excuse to stop shaving and go all matted axilla jungle. Pardon my French ;p I'm actually quite surprised this cozy bistro doesn't have more people declaring their love for. The guys running this shop are proud of their Lyonnais heritage and rightfully so! La Gone deserves nothing but top ratings! Good French places that offer affordable lunch and take away meals are really hard to come by here in frog country. In fact, I haven't found such in A'dam yet. This place is French hospitality to the max! French and hospitality, who knew? First off, the owner started by asking What, no wine for lunch? My friend at first was a little deterred by the somewhat challenging menu (no concessions made here!) commenting: don't they have anything normal, like without intestines, liver, gizzards, or anything not fatty? What's wrong with you, you you spoiled Peruvian taste buds?! Haven't I taught you anything?! Fat is good, we love fat and we jad'ore even more foie gras!!! What I love about the French cuisine is that even something "safe", like the boeuf bourguignon, is utterly satisfying. Not quite as satisfying as my "salad" though. Think salad is just French for a heap full of buttery sinful foie gras topped by a mountain of gizzards. Never had those before, but I need more of that in my life now! And why not just throw in some extra smoked duck breast, slices of dried giant figs, walnuts & their secret homemade mustard based vinaigrette. I'm sure this salad turned my liver into a hump of adipose tissue. One thing is for sure. The French are definitely not shy of ingesting some fat. And that rilette, sweet mother of ... Perhaps €17-18,50 might seem a little exorbitant for lunch. But hey, if you want quality you have to fork over. Besides, the plate du jour comes with a side salad and the portions are really generous. Trust me, after this, your stomach won't be bothering you for a good couple of hours...Also, the takeaway meals are priced considerably more kind. If I could I would visit here every weekend for a indulgent lunch and take some sweets or a baguette home for a light dinner. You know citron gateau is French for dinner right... p.s the macarons are by far the best I've tasted so far!!!

From a very simple cheese and salad amuse bouche, smoked sea bass and mixed fish starter, an incredible house smoked duck breast (with home made fig and nut chutney) and a very interesting rabbit ragu and finally a desert collection; everything was perfect! Wine pairings were also very interesting, all obscure European sourced wines that matched the food perfectly. Including, something I had never heard of before, a pinot grigio from Luxembourg. If you like good, French style, food I strongly suggest you try De Eetkamer. Heck, the next time you are in the Netherlands and you like good food, this place is worth a visit. You may have noticed all my reviews to date on Yelp have been 5 star, this is deliberate. Life is too short to focus on that which does not make us happy. This is why I restrict my reviews to those things/places that make me happy and appreciate life. Sure, I have been to some really dreadful hotels and restaurants, but, like I said, life is too short to spend time thinking and writing about them.

The bread truly tasted like what I've eaten in Paris and Provence. My uncle ordered the poisson du jour (daily fish special), while I had the limande-sole meunière; he said his dish was delicious, and I thorougly enjoyed mine too, especially after a deboning lesson by our server (who I suspect was also the owner, or at least the manager). But the highlight for me was the dessert, a throroughly delicious tarte au citron that was tangy and creamy, with a wonderful, slightly spicy crust, served with a berry coulis. The service was attentive without being overly solicitous, and the atmosphere felt cozy and welcoming. I am only witholding one star due to the noise level as the restaurant filled up, which is a natural consquence of the tile floor, I'm sure. Can't really be helped, but it does make it a little more difficult to hold a conversation as the wine flows. Recommended!

But our team is a good hardworking group, and our dinner was set for Tapperij at 6:30 PM. This restaurant is located within the Archipelago Area, and at the corner of the Rue De Tapperij Aceh. Tapperij features classic French cuisine with the ambiance of one of the oldest pubs in The Hague (since 1886). The chef also emphasizes seasonal products, preferably on Dutch soil. Our group pretty much had the back room to ourselves. It was cozy, classy, and comfortable, and featured lots of knick knacks (including an old Shell service station pump). The front part of the restaurant also would have been perfect for a romantic dinner with Gayle. We enjoyed a delicious multi-course meal which included Bass, Pheasant, and a lot of good wine. We had a great time talking about mutual interests, our respective country-specific view points (including jokes), and even work issues. And that discussion carried on at the hotel bar after dessert. Maybe it was the Team bonding and the recovery from jet lag, but the Day 2 meetings seemed to flow much better. I returned home with a big work list, but with a better perspective the next time I pick up the phone or send an email. And that most enjoyable meal at Tapperij helped make that all possible.

Although the food was very good and orginal and the wine as well, I was a bit disappointed with the breadth of the choice for the three course menu. There were only two very specific dishes per course. The prices were also quite steep compared to the quality of the food (which was great, but not spectacular). Nevertheless, we did really enjoy the wines there (they have wonderfull Rioja from 2009 on the list) and both the dessert and the friandeses (basically a second dessert:-)), were very allealing. Also, the place has a lovely ambiance with a lot of vintage collectors items places into the interior.

We ended our 2 week family holiday in Europe dining here and we were completely delighted. Our server was extremely professional and articulate and made our evening great. The wine list is quite extensive. We chose a 2005 French Burgundy. The wine sommelier did a masterful job opening and presenting the excellent wine. Our party of five each ordered their own dishes, and all of them were perfectly prepared and attractively presented. Delicious! A kitchen with real chefs at work. We ended with two desserts. They were very small and fancy in their appearance, but lacked a bit in satisfying our group. They were a bit tiny and polite. A bit larger and more lavish flavors would have been appreciated. Overall, this was our top restaurant experience over a two week vacation where we dined out nearly every night across France, Germany and the Netherlands! Only wish we had a similar quality establishment closer to home in the US.

Now this guy, Patrick, is super friendly and owns the little french café Chez Nicolle on the street and has now expanded the business to a restaurant a few houses down. Patrick is from France and brings authenticity to the place. The french cheese is awesome and the champagne even better. The place is just starting up so the menu is in working progress but being there from the beginning makes it even more exiting. Patrick is also, as we speak, leasing musicians and there will be jazz, accordion electro and what no playing from the basement real soon. All apparently in the comfort of speaking level. I like that. Picture yourself with a glas of superb champagne, french cheese, good friends, jazz and being able to converse. Awesome (I know I'm old inside but don't we all just hate restaurants and bars where the musics makes it impossible to speak to one another?). So I'd just officially like to recommend a place of warmth, good drinks and cheese (have I mention the cheese or what?). Big plus for being located on such a lovely street as well. Great people leaving there, I've heard.
