For what Cafe Como is, it's pretty much perfect.
You'd be hard pressed to find something on their menu that is more than a fiver. There may be a few items, but I've never ordered them. To be fair, I've only ever done breakfast here, but if you want a greasy spoon English-style breakfast done right (and CHEAP) hit up Cafe Como.
The people that work the counter are some of the nicest I've met in London. The woman I usually order from is Romanian, and proud owner of probably the best smile in Peckham (I say proud because she must be, given how often she flashes it). Love shooting the shit with her, however briefly. Another guy that was there one day made sure that a fat glob of Marmite found its way to the huge breakfast plate I'd ordered, as he knew I'd be splitting it with someone utterly obsessed with the stuff (no, seriously, she has a problem, it's a bit worrying...). I've yet to see anyone in that cafe, no matter how disgruntled looking or hungover or whatever (the typical greasy spoon types) get anything less than smiles and good service. Well played Cafe Como, well played.
Sure, the food isn't amazing. It doesn't have to be. It's greasy spoon English, and (no offense to you English folks here), that isn't exactly known for being la creme de la creme. Fried bread (so bad, but so good), fried eggs, sausage, English-style bacon (not bacon, by the way, but I digress...), canned beans, tomatoes. Standard fare, but done fast, and cheap. And everything comes with tea or coffee included.
Love it. Not trying to be anything more than it is, and it doesn't need to. read more
