Cafe Chaos is a really cool place to visit in Darmstadt. The decor is a mish mash of odds and ends. They have an extensive collection of vending machines, which is quite interesting. The staff is friendly specifically Christoph with the red bun. The menu is extensive and features diner style food. It is really cheap and tastes delicious. I definitely love the homey atmosphere. Will review in English (sorry! :( my German isn't good yet). I really enjoyed breakfast at this restaurant. The food was fresh and tasted great! Service staff was very friendly and attentive. The decor is also very interesting, lots to see around you - like a mix of 50s diner and Art nouveau style decor. So this is a highly recommended place if you're ever in Darmstadt. Great food, atmosphere, and service :) 4/5 but I take out one star because the menu/Speisekarte was very difficult to read. It took us so long just to figure out what to eat. Perhaps that's just part of the "café chaos" theme? Otherwise, everything about this place is great!!! read more

One of the best cafes in Darmstadt. Aimed at your average student, it's not very chic, in fact it's a bit shabby, but it's friendly and the food is varied and generally of a good quality, with generous portions and at a range of prices to suit most pockets. One reason I like it is they serve the Milchkaffee Cafe au lait in a bowl, sometimes there's even a biscuit hidden under the cup. It's little things like that that I love in a cafe. One must eat is the home made waffle with fresh fruit and cream. Another must drink is the Guinness, it's the best I've had in Germany. Oh and if you're into automats there's an automat museum. Just visit the loos there and have a look. Just don't be in too much of a hurry. Speed eating is not a feature here. read more

The kartoffel suppe is solid here. Their potatoe soup with bacon or bay shrimps comes with a nice bread roll, and the soup is so creamy and tastey. The decor is unique. They have a variety of old/new quarter-runned vending machines here, which looks like they date back to the 1950s? Anyways, sit inside or outside..but be aware of the bees in the summer time. They don't sting/bite, but the numbers can make some feel uncomfortable. If only they all can be friendly like die Biene Maja :) read more

I have been here 4 times now. And my wife many times, also through her college years. What a local Gem . Truly home cooked food. Affordable prices, excellent service. Friendly, trendy, cosy and artisitic. A diamond among the rough. I highly recommend a visit here. read more

Breakfast until midnight? A vendor machine museum? I am sure the owners are kids at heart. The waiters are always friendly, and sometimes even funny. They'll also try their best to speak english if you don't speak any german. If you don't see any free tables, don't just leave but look again if there is a table with enough free seats. What a weird and wonderful place I will come back to over and over again. Pitas and pasta dishes are highly recommendable as well as their daily specials. The hot chocolate is the best in town. The setting is something between Nirvana meets nostalgia. Lots of ending machine vintage and other treasures. Staff is refreshingly honest and entertaining. As an exchange student in Darmstadt, Cafe Chaos has probably been my number one go to place if I had trouble deciding on a delicious meal close to where I lived or near Luisenplatz. The prices are average, not necessarily cheap but affordable. The pizzas were great and were actually on the cheaper side in comparison to most items on the menu. Sehr lecker! But I really loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, with all the little vending machines with random trinkets. I miss it! read more

This is my first 1 star review, but I have never experienced a more rude service in my life, and this includes the restaurant manager. After complaining about waiting for the ordered food for longer then hour, I have been actually called "an idiot" - this is totally unacceptable. read more

Terrible customer service. I had to wait almost two full hours for my breakfast (a scrambled egg with some bread): After one hour of waiting I asked the waiter about my breakfast - only to be told it will "arrive soon". After another 30 minutes waiting time I confronted the waiter again with the missing breakfast - and upon double checking I was given the excuse that "apparently your Order slip fell down". I don't accept this excuse because I proactively addressed the long waiting time beforehand. I was not even given an apology. In addition to that my order and the order of my seating neighbors were messed up - they could at least use the two hours of preparation time to make sure to get the order right. At some point I realized that all tables around me started making fun of the service as well since many people had to wait long time and their order were messed up. This is one of the best places in Darmstadt. The food is very good and covers a wide range of cuisine. The service is great and always exceptionally friendly and thoughtful. The interior is fun and quirky. Definitely my favourite place in Darmstadt and I always end up eating there at least once a week. Why does Darmstadt not have more places like this?! read more
