I have eaten here twice and also have gotten take-out. The food has always been top-notch, and the menu is full of many Italian specialties. Plus, they have a bakery with delicious pastries. My sister had her wedding cake from here, and it was amazing. I was also impressed with the price system they use. New York State allows businesses to tack on an extra percentage fee for customers paying by credit card. This means that the prices listed in the menu include a "cash discount," thus paying by card means you pay more than what you read on the menu. At Cafe Canole, their menu prices are what you would pay by card. When you receive the bill, the prices listed are less than that, as if you are paying by cash. So if you pay cash, you'll pay that amount, and if you pay by card, you'll pay what's on the menu rather than something higher than what the menu says. I like the way they do that. read more

I heard good things about this place so wanted to go to lunch with my friends on this Thursday. The hours are 12-9 per Yelp. When we walked in we were told not open for lunch! Not sure why the hours don't match the Yelp page but open for dinner at 4:00. We did take some cookies home. I thought the cannoli and pastie were expensive at 4.50 each but my friend said they were good. I bought an assortment of Italian cookies, the fig cookie was good, the vanilla cookie was good but the biscotti was soft!!! It should be hard!! I rarely give restaurant reviews but Cafe Canole really deserved this one! My daughter and I were doing a college tour at Hamilton, and were far from home. We were told that there was a great Italian restaurant in a nearby town, about a 10-15 min drive away. My daughter and I absolutely love Italian food, so we made a reservation, and I'm so glad we did did. First, we were so surprised by the atmosphere when we arrived. The restaurant didn't have a single empty table, nor was the bar seating. People were truly having a great time, and the restaurant was so clean, upscale, warm, and inviting. We were seated in the dining area to the rear, and we also loved the atmosphere there. We snooped around at other people's meals and everything looked amazing so we ordered a whole bunch of appetizers and meals to share. We ordered meatballs, risotto balls, calamari, two different pasta dishes, and filet mignon. (Yes, we came hungry and got a little excited). Honestly, I couldn't even begin to choose a stand-out dish because they were high-quality and all truly amazing... the portions are huge! Everything we ate was perfect. It is obvious that the owners and managers take great pride in their food, it really shows. Another thing we noticed was that most of the patrons of the restaurant were regulars, I can see why. We made some small talk with a couple sitting next to us. They were local and frequented the restaurant. They had nothing but great things to say about the food, and the owners, as well. We ended the night by ordering one of their famous canole's and a few other desserts. I'm not typically a dessert person, but they are so special. As stuffed as we were, we managed to make a good dent in the dessert, and even shared some of it with the locals sitting next to us. It was such a fun experience! Finally, a review wouldn't be a review, without talking about the service. Our waiter was so friendly. I had a glass of chardonnay (La Crema) in front of me within a minute of being seated. He was happy to discuss the menu items when I had questions, and checked on us often. Our experience and the food couldn't have been better. Utica and Schenectady have had a similar industrial city history (and sort of a similar fate and recent revitalization). New Hartford NY (where Cafe Canole is) is an outer ring suburb of Utica (and that's telling because it's only one town over...). which can explain the anticipated vs reality of the Utica area development... Out of industry came a very diverse ethnic mix to work out here....include (like Schenectady) a very large Italian community. They ran Utica as a city for a long time as well as wielding heavy political clout statewide w the Democratic party. Out of this Italian community came some wonderful eateries along some very unique dishes that came from the Mohawk Valley...chicken riggies, halfmoons, Utica greens (with escarole..), pusties...not too shabby for a city that now hovers around 60K. Cafe Canole is one of the finest in the area...lovingly owned and run by true chefs. They also incorporate a bakery into their eatery...so if you get a cannoli craving, they have them (and they are very very good..). The staff in Canole are professional but casual (as is the crowd..). Not a backwards cap kind of place though (dont do it..). My favorite dish is the gnocchi with sirloin tips in a light tomato sauce. Be prepared for the huge portions.. I usually skip lunch before venturing in here. The riggies are excellent as well... really everything I've had in there is very very good. I usually am out of here for work these days...so I just sit at the bar for dinner. There is a bakery and a restaurant each with different hours. Both the bakery and the restaurant items are on the more expensive side, however, it can be justified due to their large portions. For me personally atmosphere is very important and this is why I probably won't be returning. It is very loud and it seems as if everyone knows each other there which maybe off putting for some. This is a long-overdue review of Cafe CaNole. I've been visiting this place for drinks, lunch, and dinner multiple times since moving here and it has never ceased to amaze me. First of all, parking is a breeze since it has a public free parking ground right next to the cafe so absolutely no worries about fighting for parking spots. Ambience is modern and classy at the same time, with specials written on traditional "blackboard," which is catchy. The place is not too big but feels very cozy and homey. Their lunch and dinner menu are fabulous. The calamari is wonderful, the caprese salad is great, Gnocchi Pomodoro and Linguine & White Clams are tasty to another world. Most importantly, it's the staff that are here. I'd especially like to recommend Jason, Paul, Nicole, Lauren, and Dino for their extraordinary service, friendliness and attentiveness. Every single time I visit they make sure everything is up to your satisfaction and they always have a friendly smile on their faces. They are the reason that I will be coming back all the time, and the delicious food is just another bonus. My first review ever has to be about Cafe Canole! We had a party of 12, (actually 2 groups of 6 seated at slightly different times due to scheduling issues within the family!) The food is phenomenal and the portions are like what your Italian Grandma would pile on your plate! Old school Italian dishes like Chicken Milanese, Gnocchi Pomodora and Cavatelli Piselli are enough to keep you coming back for more. Now combine that with new school specials like the fish tacos everyone enjoyed last night, or the Pesto Gnocchi and Shrimp I had, and you can never go wrong! Back to Cafe Canole before the 4th. It drives us back with its one of the kind lobster bisque, and the weekday deal $25 for 3 courses. They updated the menu a bit and the lobster bisque is a bit smaller than before I think. Flavor is still great with chunks of lobster meat. Orders haddock oregano for my entree. The rice underneath has great flavor and I love eating my fish with the rice. The Nutella crepe went back to the 25 dollar menu and I asked to put the ice cream aside. The crepe is not as good as the Vivi cafe but overall flavor is nice. I am not from Utica, so I asked my friend my first night in town to take me to a place where I could flavor some local food that was fresh and light. He took me here and it was delicious! We shared 4 of their appetizers and had wine. The wine menu was very good with lots of different varieties. The crab cakes and Utica greens were my favorite, but a close second being the beet salad. The first time I came here was a year ago for my bday dinner and everything was on point. Now literally a year later I'm here again for my bday dinner except this time with much less people and everything was off. It started from when, we a party of three had dinner reservation at 6. We didn't get seated till almost 7. Finally got seated, ordered our drinks and dinner. We ended up watching all of the people that came in after us got their food before us. So the waiter came around with 2 of our meals, disappointed again because it turns out it wasn't ours and i guess they thought it was for take out, but it wasn't so they had to remake it? I got the salmon spinach and Tuscan green beans, but I didn't see any green beans instead they gave me white beans. Once again disappointed. Salmon was cooked good, but that was about it.
