The staff is friendly, attentive, and very hardworking. The prices here are great! I ate every single bite of my loco moco and felt stuffed and that was without having had breakfast. Huge loco but don't order the plate. Two eggs bacon and cold toast. My son got the huge loco yet was disappointed there was no patty. What's a loco without a patty he asked? Small place with outside seating with homeless people walking by as you eat which made me feel so bad. The price is cheap but two eggs bacon and some cold toast was 8.50 with a coffee. It is what it is. Cafe 100 is not a fine dining experience or a world class gourmet. Its plain and simple local style food at a great price and done fast. The price. If I ever had only three dollars in my pocket and a dire need to eat this is where you would find me. I'm convinced this is the best deal on food you will get on this Island. There have been occasions that a home cooked meal has costed more than eating at Cafe 100. 3 dollars will get you a single loco which is plenty enough food for you if you are on a budget. 5 will get you a Super loco which is plenty enough if you eat a lot. The food. I am confident that i could chef-up a better tasting loco moco than Cafe 100. Made with a seasoned kobe beef patty, fresh gravy made with a special blend of fine beef drippings and spices and eggs cooked to perfection also lightly seasoned served over a bed of sauteed mushrooms. I could not however, do this at a price range of $3 or within 3-5 min. I could complain all day about how the food's taste pales in comparison to places like Ken's Pancake House or Don's Grill. I feel they often suffer a bad rap for their foods because people fail to understand that this is a place that serves fast food style plate lunches. No one complains that McDonald's does not server a better tasting burger than the Hilo Burger joint right? A more adequate comparison to Cafe 100 would be Freddy's or Blane's. Out of the three i would rather go to Cafe 100. The services is simple. Wait in line, order, get your food, take out or dine in. i don't think I have ever waited longer than 6 min to get a plate of food here. After eating here from time to time over the course of my entire life, Ive never had a single problem with the service. Kept simple not wow-ed but never disappointed. The atmosphere. They keep the place clean but it is open air so you get bugs and birds and what ever the air smells like that day. The bathrooms are clean enough but I don't think id go number 2 there. First time on the Big Island, landed around 8:00 am and was hungry so didn't take much thought to head over to the famous Cafe 100 to try one of their Loco Mocos. They have some exotic varieties but ended up getting their Super - one hamburger patty, two slices of Portuguese sausage, a slice of SPAM, two eggs over easy, gravy, brown rice (to assuage some of the guilt over everything else on the plate), and macaroni salad. If you want good and cheap grinds, Cafe 100 is the best in Hilo. Because I'm a poor student, instead of going to McD's or some other fast food restaurant, I actually prefer going to Cafe 100. They serve all the typical local food that a "drive-inn" usually has, but with great prices. Case in point? $1.99 for the classic loco moco. I've tried almost everything on the menu, and my favorites are the different locos and stews. It's great that they also have salads and other healthy alternatives too, although you'd be crazy to only eat that. Cafe 100 is one of the few MUST EAT at places in Hilo. Out of all the food places we've visited in Hawaii thus far, this has been all of our least favorite. The texture of the meat in the loco moco was almost soggy, and the sauce had little flavor. There's a couple good snacks at Cafe 100, and some people love it because it's dirt cheap and it tastes ok but for the most part Cafe 100, despite being a local favorite, is a run down, cockroach-infested dump. I don't recommend eating here unless you are a complete risk-taker when it comes to food... as in you want to risk food-poisoning, serious indigestion or maybe even a heart attack from all the grease soaked up in your food. There are some good things here though. If I recall they have miso soup and pretty decent snacks. Went back for the Super Loco and a Gravyburger. While I felt my arteries hardening and cholesteral building in my system I could not help but appreciate the gravy. The thick, dark, rich, and smokey gravy hits the spot. It makes the loco moco and the gravy burger awesome. This is the reason that everyone continues to return to Cafe 100. Any dish with that superb thick tasty brown gravy on it will be good. Maybe not healthy or low fat, but good. read more

So, I never knew what the big fuss was about loco moco. It's a burger with an egg on top covered in gravy over rice. I've had it at other places and it's OK. I can make this at home, so why order it when I'm eating out? With that said, I have had the best loco moco at Cafe 100, and I realize that for the first time, that this is the loco moco that made it a favorite mainstay dish among local Hawaiians on all the islands. I came here with my wife, and she ordered the loco moco. I had just eaten something and didn't want anything here except a bite of her loco moco. I must have ended up eating about half of it. Part of the trick is, I guess you have to know how to eat it. You have to chop up the burger patty and mix the entire contents with the rice. It turns into an almost risotto-like dish after you do this. The loco moco here has great flavor. The burger patty has something in it that gives the patty some flavor as well. This blends very well with the gravy sauce and egg mixture. And at $1.99, you can't go wrong here. We even got a bumper sticker that says "I love my loco moco!" Can't beat the dining experience. Definitely recommended based on the loco moco and the price. A must if you want the local experience. read more

I used to eat at Cafe 100 at least once a week when I was at home and now I have to make sure I visit Cafe 100 whenever I go home. Whether it's a loco moco with a hamburger patty, portuguese sausage or fried ahi, I need a loco moco. For you Spanish speaking people, it's not a crazy booger but more like a meat of your choice with gravy and rice and an egg... I always ask for over-easy instead of the normal sunny side up. I also like the korean chicken, any of the specials like the beef stew and of course an orange bang and maybe a turnover for dessert. Cheap, fast, a ton of seating, and a ridiculously huge menu. Big portions -- the super loco moco is enough for two of us, and involves 2 eggs, 2 slice of Portuguese sausage , spam and burger. They give you the option of brown rice which is nice. We also had the 4 piece fried chicken which was also great. This is the creators of the loco moco?? What makes up a loco moco? I've always thought it was rice, meat, egg, and gravy all over? Hence, I didn't get the "regular" loco moco...Instead, I wanted to try the beef teriyaki one (which was the wrong one cuz I actually wanted the patty and not the actual slices if meat). Anyway, when I received it, it didn't have gravy on it :( I was confused because I thought gravy was in the definition of a "loco moco???" All I got was rice, beef, and egg. It's all about the Super Loco. I love loco moco; despite my increasing waist line, this super simple tasty dish is just too hard to resist. Hawaii restaurants seem to be on two extreme sides - super expensive and super cheap. Cheap doesn't mean you lose on the quality here, and the only downside is that we went on some super hot day. The drive in atmosphere probably works 99% of the time in Hilo when it's overcast, but the hot summer day we were there proved to be... trying (with damp and sweat, but we persevered nonetheless). Despite that the somen salad (cold somen, konyaku, light teriyaki dressing) was excellent. The super loco was an absolute steal at $5.95 packed. The food here is really cheap. The tables are nice and new. But the food is ok. Hubby got the seafood plate and I got the special mixed plate (bbq beef and fried chicken). The seafood plate was good. The seafood was fresh, but it was all fried. The mixed plate was not so good. The bbq beef was ok, although a bit dry, but the fried chicken was tough and tasteless. The next time I got the breakfast loco moco ($1.99!) and hubby got the sunriser (egg, ham and cheese on an english muffin) for $3.79. It was pretty good and well worth the price. read more

Visiting Hilo for the day and really wanted an authentic plate lunch. Came to Cafe 100 however we were let down. I had the grilled Mahi Mahi with Mac Salad and Brown Rice and my hubby had the mixed plate with Teri Beef and Fried Chicken. My Mahi Mahi was very very thin and over cooked, the Teri Beef tastes like it was soaked in water no Teriyaki flavor. Maybe a bad day but we will not try again. read more

I don't see how this place can get anything but 4 or 5 stars. This is tasty classic Hawaiian "country" food served in simple, low-overhead setting. (Imagine the very first In-N-Out from 30 years ago). It is outdoor seating only. The portions are generous and the prices are as good as it gets. There were four of us. Two got loco mocos which were very good. The last got the fish special which was, well, just plain too fishy. I like fishy fish, ala saba sushi, but this was borderline bad. So... why 5 stars? I got the pork adobo special with brown rice and the mac salad. I've only had two great pork adobos in my life and this was one of them. It all started on a road trip eons ago, on a spur of the moment stop to a Stockton cafe in a tired part of town. The pork adobo was revelatory. A perfect blend of soy, vinegar and spices. I thought all pork adobo tasted this way. I was sorely wrong. Over the years, I have since looked hi and low and finally found a worthy successor in HiLo. Again a perfect blend of tender pork, with near perfect seasoning. The brown rice was perfect. I'd come back here again in a hot second. Five stars. read more
