I was very disappointed with the Chili Locos that were ordered for dinner tonight! It's as if it was the bottom of the pot! And the OE egg was not OE but OVER HARD! I have eaten here numerous times and this by far was the worse!!! Please make sure that you have an abundant supply of chili ready to serve your customers daily. I understand running out of your daily specials but honestly....chili??? It's on your daily menu!!!! Very low key and relaxed. Was a perfect lunch spot after we did some site seeing and trail hikes. I didn't want anything too fancy since we were sweaty and looked like beach buns and I didn't feel embarrassed. Husband and I split the Super Loco, Amazing!!! Definitely recommend!!! We also shared and orange bang? Not sure of that's what it was called but it was essentially and orange slushie and that was delicious, especially after a hot sweaty day. We also shared the peach turnover. Looked like an empanada more than a turn over, but very good, not too sweet, you got the tart taste from the peaches and just a subtle sweet from the powder sugar they sprinkled on it. Classic staple in Hilo. Above average lunch plate take out establishment that serves great portions with reasonable prices. I mean who doesn't love their 4 different sizes and versions of the loco moco with even more variations of it on the menu! They've even got goody goods in coconut or strawberry, it's their take on guri guri ice cream! Their saimin broth tasted like water, but their miso ahi was good! Simple but good! The bento is a great combo and my kids didn't complain about the chili and rice bowls so it must've been ok. I do not like green eggs and ham, but brown gravy and spam. The Spam moco was enhanced by the residue on their well-seasoned grill that lent a smoky flavor to the Spam. The amount of dark brown gravy was in perfect ratio to the rice. To my delight, the egg I ordered sunny up was super runny. The Portuguese longanisa sausage moco was correctly strongly spiced, but not as homey as the classic Spam. The Spam was also easier to cut inside the clear plastic container. This was a great little local spot where my husband and I met up with friends during our honeymoon. You order at the window and eat outside on the patio. The food is local and comes out fast. This is ESPECIALLY true if you like loco moco because they have a long list here that will make your mouth water. Even for the two of us as we ordered the super loco, our bill came about $20. I couldn't believe it. Our super loco came with Portuguese sausage, spam and a hamburger patty with a rich dark gravy that I thought was en par with the Big Island Grill on the other side of the island. You order and in 5 min your food is ready which you can eat there or take to go. It's busy, but they have quick service so be ready to order when you are at the window! Remember to check their times as they are closed some days of the week (Sunday!). An easy place to get to on your way to the Botanical Gardens or even to the volcano. Wanted a hamburger, not, my son thought it was a kid sandwich, so I had to check the menu board again, it didn't read "kid burger". Yes cafe 100, has been part of Hilo for many moons. I grew up having lunches now and then from cafe 100. I would give this place 3 stars... but recently went there in June 2009 while visiting the island and found out that they no longer make peach pineapple turn overs! I'm a huge fan of their turnovers and goodie good. I was on the big island this month... and didn't stop by cafe 100. After the disappointing news. I no longer desire to eat there. As for food... I did like the mahi sandwich with corn chowder. But maybe once of twice, the mahi tasted like ocean. So after that, I gave up eating here. Not a fan of their locomoco. Only because I don't like the taste of the gravy. But they are famous for their variety of loco mocos! On a plus, they do have a variety of local food here! This place is so much tastier than the over priced touristy places I tried in Maui. I felt like I was tasting real Hawaiian home-cooking at Cafe 100! Humble ambiance, cheap prices, plenty of locals, and delicious food! My favorite entrees were the curry flavored Stew Loco Moco and the Teriyaki Beef. So tonight I had the pleasure of picking up food from Cafe 100 which is always good! I ordered the "Hilo Boy" which boasts a cup of beef stew, a big piece of fried chicken, teri beef, two scoops of rice, and of course a scoop of mac salad to top it all off! I have no complains about this dish other than that I wish I had another! There's just a bit of everything in this plate and I love it! Yaaaaas, talk about ono Hawaii kine food. My mom always tells me how Cafe 100 was a solid pick for her when she was growing up. I seriously can never make up my mind because there's too many things on the menu I want, but I always default to the Surfer Girl plate (comes with rice, mac salad, and yummy shrimp tempura!) If you aren't hungry enough for a plate, the loco moco comes in a little square take out tray and is more reasonably sized for a petite person like me. The rich gravy, patty, rice, and topped with an egg / runny yolk... everything I could ask for in an authentic loco moco. Outdoor seating with shade, so hope you don't mind a little Hilo sprinkle when it rains. So I always leave Cafe 100 feeling 100 pounds heavier... but also *100// emoji* happy! This review was written looking through the lens of 8 years of marriage, which we started off with a honeymoon in Hawai'i. We love to eat out, and tried very hard to avoid chains or tourist traps, and this offbeat guidebook we purchased recommended Cafe 100. It is a local Hilo institution with an equally interesting history. But forget all that -- they serve the meanest breakfast in the States. Stuff that would make a hardened cross-country trucker from Chicago smile and dig in. I'm talking about the Loco Moco. Want to make your own? Get a big styrofoam picnic plate. Pile it with rice. Top with a quarter pound or so of beef patty. Top with 2 fried eggs. Ladle gravy. Add fried spam and portugese sausage. A healthy side of macaroni or potato salad or (I seem to remember) kimchi. Soy sauce on the side, in case you need sodium. $5 with coffee. CAREFULLY carry over to one of the picnic tables in the spacious dining area, and eat. Repeat daily to replace all the calories you lost hiking around Volcanoes National Park or, ahem, honeymooning. So, if you're on the Big Island, and want to explore all your coronary artery disease options, you must, must, MUST stop at Cafe 100 for breakfast. read more

Busy busy busy for lunch but good and quick. I tried the somen salad. First time ever trying such a thing and it was delicious. Light and filling. I'm on Weight watchers and I guessed it was on of the healthier choices. I guessed it to come to about 8sp. At this rate I figured who cares about points it was really tasty!!! I LOVE THIS PLACE. If you're like me and love good tasting loco mocos, you're gonna love this place. Their menu consists mostly of different types of loco mocos, which will satisfy any craving you have. When I went, I ordered a super loco moco. I like my loco mocos with a lot of gravy and Cafe 100 gave a lot of gravy. The gravy was very flavorful and the hamburger patty was tasty as well (served with A LOT of rice) It's not your typical restaurant location where you sit in an air condition restaurant. This venue has a bunch of open tables where you seat yourself. The prices are reasonable here for the amount of food that you get. Only had little bit gravy and even then the taste was just normal. I don't know if it was because I had high expectations knowing that a lot of people like it. We were looking for a place to get some decent food to go, before heading up to stargaze at Mauna Kea. The look of this place made me skeptical, but it had good reviews, so we gave it a shot. We were very pleasantly surprised with our meals! My dad and I both had plate lunches, I had miso Ahi and he had miso Mahi Mahi. In both cases, the fish was fresh and the sauce complimented it very well. Their mac salad was very solid. I snagged a side of Portuguese sausage and I'm glad I did. It made for great snacking for us during the cold night on the mountain. My step mom and brother both had some loco moco variation and while I didn't try either, they both raved about their meals. I've been eating at this place since I was a kid. The prices have always been really fair and portions fit. This is the home of the loco moco. Basically, all other restaurants that serve loco mocos have this place to thank for inventing it. If you're hungry, I'd suggest the Super Loco. This has 3 scoops of rice, spam, Portuguese sausage, hamburger party, and two eggs all smothered in gravy. All for $5.95, I almost never finish it all. Another one of my favorites, is the miso soup special. It's miso soup with egg, kamaboko, rice, and green onions for ~$2.50. They also offer brown rice as alternative for white. Enjoy! read more

Yum, the loco moco is pretty awesome! for $1.99 you get enough food to fill you up and I just love the hawaii charm. My dad got the fried rice loco with spam and I have to say that I actually preferred that one over my gravy dish, but omg, they have a brown rice option!! very cool! My mom got the bento and it was pretty good! Beef and a little fish on it. The cabbage on it left something to be desired (too salty) but all 3 of us ate hearty lunchs (off the ricter scale for calories) for under $20, which is pretty unheard of - especially in hawaii. aloha! read more

A certain guidebook gave this place an "Ono" award for local food. The book missed the mark. Sure, it was filling. Sure, we had enough for two meals each when my lovely companion and I went. So this review is based solely on the super loco and lilikoi soft drink. I decided to check this place out because I was washing clothes at a nearby washer. Although I'm a Hilo native, I never did frequent the place. I've been here when I was younger but I've never eaten here in my adult years up until recent. Café, 100 is supposedly home of the "loco moco" and after having the super loco, I'd believe that. It wasn't the most amazing, knock your socks off loco moco but it was really good. A super loco comes with a homemade hamburger patty, spam and portuguese sausage, two eggs, rice and mac and all for $6 and some change. Although everything was good, it was the gravy that brought it all together. The gravy is really good. Like I said, it's not the best I've had but it is really good. Plus, the best loco I've had was nowhere near $6 lol so for quantity and quality, you can't go wrong here. The staff here is super friendly and the seating area is pretty big. They do accept credit and debit which for me is super convenient because I never carry cash. I also recommend y'all try their lilikoi soft drink. It was recommended by my cashier and I'm glad I tried it. It's a nice alternative to soda (which I don't drink). Anyway if the rest of their menu can promise the same quantity and quality that I got with my super loco and lilikoi juice, then I can honestly say that I'm super excited and anxious to eat my way through the menu. The "original" loco moco (the real original one burned down) was decent, but lacked flavor. Everything was there that made the loco moco but nothing really stood out to me. Traditionally a hamburger patty with an easy over egg on rice, smothered with gravy, the Loco Moco has now morphed into many different varieties. Cafe 100 has been around for over 65 years....from their website: In 1946, after Richard Miyashiro was discharged from the Army, he opened a diner in his hometown Hilo and named it "Cafe 100" in tribute to the 100th Infantry Battalion. He had been a member of the 100th Battalion during World War II. This was a unit comprised of Hawaii-born Japanese-American young men who volunteered to fight for America when there was bigotry against them and their families because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This place seems to be a local favorite, but come on guys, it sucks. The combo plate had fried chicken, tonkatsu and some chicken chinese thing... all yuck. Best thing was the mac salad and rice... sad comment. One friend had the hamburger steak... tasted overly processed... yuck. Another friend had the Kilauea loco moco -- chili rice with egg, spam, lil' smokies. Chili was like momma's homecooked chili.... unfortunately momma hated to cook... double yuck. The food (quality, taste) is probably only a 3 star rating, but their value earns them a +1! Their menu is HUGE and filled with everything from breakfast items, to sandwiches, to of course, local food. All pretty cheap for what you get! I always get the loco moco, eggs scrambled, for $2.75.
