Great cafe near Stadtpark. Relaxed, less tourists and more local. When the day is as nice as today, sunny 24c, seating outside having a super good Pruckel cream coffee and cheese omelette can't be better in the morning. Service is not rushed. Seems like you can a tay as long as you wish. U3 is nearby so you can go anywhere afterwards. read more

Als ich meine Bestellung aufgeben wollte, war der Mitarbeiter, der anderen Gästen gegenüber freundlich war, mir gegenüber unhöflich und diskriminierend. Meine Bestellung wurde wiederholt ignoriert, und mein Getränk wurde viel später serviert als das der anderen Gäste. Da das Café zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht überfüllt war, fühlte sich dieses Verhalten wie eine klare Diskriminierung an. Dieses Erlebnis war äußerst unangenehm, und ich fühlte mich, als wäre ich in diesem Raum nicht willkommen. Es war schockierend und traurig, auf meiner Reise so offen diskriminiert zu werden. Ich möchte anderen Gästen raten, bei einem Besuch in diesem Café vorsichtig zu sein. This is one of my favorite Viennese cafes as it is bright and spacious. The coffee and pastries are always great. I also like to come for a traditional Viennese breakfast with Semmel and croissant. They have a big menu with lots of different Vegetables iennese coffees and savory mains. The staff is half half, the younger ones are welcoming and friendly while the more experienced are typical Viennese. read more

Apple strudel was a bit disappointing because it wasn't crunchy on the sides. They make a big one and cut pieces and I guess we happened to get a middle piece. It was kinda bland... We were recommended here for their desserts. We should have gotten their other sugary dessert to start. They did have affordable drinks though. The best Tafelspitz I have had in all of Austria! Tender, with both horseradish and sour cream on the side, stringed potatoes and parsnips. An outstanding combination, rounded out with a special strudel (Milchrahmstrudel) and a first-rate grappa. Along with the entree I had a Naturradler beer with lemon. And all served by a truly professional waiter in a dark suit and tie. What a treat! read more

The atmosphere is where it's at here. Straight out of 1950. You just have to go. They have very small breakfast portions and good coffee, but you just have to go sit in the place. Feels like time travel. read more

Sunday late dinner after flying in from the US. Service is fashionable slow. Prices are quite reasonable for a traditional Cafe. My first choice was unavailable, but the day's special was quite good. Came here after a very long day of frolicking around Vienna. Our Airbnb host recommended this place as a good spot for coffee and pastries. It's a 1930s vibe in the place. We decided to stop here after seeing they served food too. We were going to wing it with the menu in German but alas, our server brought us menus in English. I ordered the viennese goulash. The beef was very tender and the paprika sauce was good. It was serves with potatoes. For dessert, I ordered the apple strudel. It was served room temp but it was good. Never got my food. I had been to this cafe before a few times for coffee and once for breakfast with really no problem at all. It will always be an old, dingy but retro, historic and overpriced cafe with slow, Viennese, pompous service. Blah blah blah. What's new, you say? It's the Innenstadt, you say? What do you expect, you say? I expect food when I order it! My breakfast, after 45 minutes had never come. Waiter proceeds to first blame me as if I were lying by saying "look you did eat breakfast" as he points to my husband's empty plates. Yes, my husband, and everyone else in the restaurant got their breakfast. I sir did not. Then he accused his colleague. Out of principle we paid the check for what we consumed, left, having received no apology, and no chance for redemption, i.e with free coffee or breakfast on the house. We crossed the street to the modern Coffee Shop Company and received 100% service as valued customers, a tasty breakfast and coffee at a much more reasonable price. read more

Only visited this because it was on our tour guide. Shouldn't have. Riding on the fumes of its former fame, this place really stunk. Literally. They're trying to be more health-enlightened by providing a "smoke-free" environment which consists of getting stuck in the depressing back room with a floor-to-ceiling glass sliding door that's shared with - yup, the smoking room. Atmosphere - seriously depressing. The place is seriously worn down and beat up. Food - really stale, and I really wouldn't touch anything in that glass display case, everything looks like it's been sitting there for ages. Service - sucked more than usual. Unless you REALLY need to go for the history of it, as a tourist I would walk in front of it, gawk inside, snap a pic, then skip this in favor of all the other wonderful cafes you can find in this fine city. read more

I think this is more for tourists because I don't see how they get many repeat customers to keep them in business. Service isn't great, our young waiter came over and took our drink order and we asked him to come back in a few minutes so we could decide what to eat. He returned 5 minutes later and came to the table as if he had never seen us before and asked for our drink order. This was not a good start. The food is just ok. I had bacon and eegs and my wife had pancakes with jam which was way over priced at 4.50 for two small pancakes with a small amount of jam in them, nothing else. The decor hasn't been touched in many many years and it shows. You can find better cafes in Vienna and I suggest you keep looking. read more

I would have given this place five stars, but the waiters were aloof -- thumbs down on the service. Despite the service, we dined here four times. The food, on the other hand, is very good. It was one of our first tastes of Austrian food on our first full day in Vienna. The menu was in German, so we had no idea what to order. I saw a couple of men eating what looked like gigantic meatballs, so I asked our waitress (the nicest one we encountered while we were there) told us that they were eating just that. We each ordered a plate and loved it! Two huge meatballs, a mound of potatoes and a bowl of potatoes, carrots and spinach. It was delicious. Since we were in a traditional Viennese coffeehouse, we had to try the coffee. The cappuccino was superb. It had the right amount of foam and full of flavor -- just the way I like it. My husband had a couple of other meaty meals, including a lamb dish with an arugula/potato puree, which he raved about. Try the Viennese breakfast of an egg, rolls, a croissant (SO GOOD and flaky) and coffee. No music plays except for the live piano music on certain evenings. All I heard was the lovely sounds of coffee cups clinking on saucers and people speaking in German. If you want to avoid the smoking area, enter the cafe through the back entrance and sit there. Overall, we loved this cafe, which apparently opened back in 1903. It still has an old-vibe in it. It definitely does not scream "modern." read more

I ate my first meal in Vienna here about 3 weeks ago. My friend and I were wandering around, trying to find a place that had vegetarian options for myself. We stumbled upon this place not too far away from our hotel. We go in and see signs about how this restaurant is over 100 years old. Coming from the U.S. where hardly anything is ever that old, we were pretty intrigued. Our waitress was a nice young woman who was informative and helpful. I had the egg spaetzle and my friend had the chicken and ham toast. I liked my dish as did my friend. I thought the portions were kind of small, but whatever. The food wasn't too phenomenal, though. For dessert, we shared a curd cheese strudel which was very very good. While we were sharing our dessert, a pianist came by to play some live music. Overall, a nice first dining experience in this beautiful city. read more

This was my favorite cafe in Vienna. It's always crowded and busy, but you can always manage to find a table, even if you have to wait a few minutes. The furniture is like 50s throwback stuff, though I suspect it's legitimately been there since the 50s. There is an old, nonfunctioning cigarette vending machine in one room - haven't seen one of those in decades. Appeared to be a magazine stand now. The waiters are quite snobby, but not mean. Waitresses are far nicer, but I wasn't put off by any of them, just found it amusing. Service is S L O W... so be prepared to relax and wait. The coffee is wonderful - I had several variations over the week we visited and each time I was delighted with the flavor. We ate only small things, really enjoyed the apfelstrudel! Wish we had eaten a meal there, but I guess next time we are in Vienna. :) This is the first place we went after landing. We were deliriously tired and trying to remain awake for a few more hours so as to minimize jet lag. A couple of verlangerters later and I was ready to walk the streets of Vienna. We went back several times over the week and had lovely experiences each time. It felt homey and welcoming, and I really loved going there. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. read more

My husband brought me here for breakfast. I loved the interior, it's like from maybe the 1940's or 50's. The cafe was busy and the waiter was efficient and helped with questions. When the food arrived, it was as expected and tasty. My biggest take away though, was the decor and interior. read more

A cute little cafe in the corner that seems to be bustling with locals both during the day and night time. Food is classic Viennese cafe fare, simple, well prepared and cheap. It must be said that service here is very bad and borderline rude, which did diminish the experience greatly. The waiters are crooks! If the waiter hadn't padded the bill this would have been a 4 or 5 star review. But, he did and it is clear to me that he has had a lot of practice. The trick was to pick out an obvious tourist (me!) who did not know the service/tip is included by law in the bill in Vienna--and add an extra tip on top of the already included tip by adding on more to the printed receipt in handwriting and then presenting the new alleged total as the correct amount. Otherwise, the atmosphere is nice and the food okay. But watch your bill and be sure they don't scam you. Better yet, go elsewhere. There are plenty of nice cafes within a block or two. read more

This is another cafe place in the central district of Vienna where one can stay for hours to entire day doing work or meeting friends while having coffee and some excellent cakes. They took reservations for the tables even for day time use which is interesting. I came with a couple of local friends who knew the waiters well so we got good tables to stay for a few hours. They had live piano that night which was very enjoyable. read more

I rarely go to the "first generation" Wiener Cafe's, but I've been here a couple times. My boss actually likes to have meetings at this one, but today I went with a visitor. We didn't really eat the food: toast and soup. The soup was good and the toast was toast. You can't really screw up toast. Beer and wine were fine. Finished our meal with a very nice Apfelstrudel, a little too sweet, and coffee. Service was excellent and I wouldn't mind going back again for coffee and snacks, though probably never for dinner. Oh, make reservations. I can't stand fighting with tourists for a table. read more

a very traditional and old style cafe, typical for vienna, so gotta like it. waiters are usually moody, which can be annoying but i think that just comes with the flair of a traditional viennese coffeehouse ;) food is good, and they don't mind if you sit there for 3 hours having a business meeting, so yeah its pretty cool in there. only sad thing is that some of the old and pretty nice interior design has been replaced by more modern (well 70s style already anyway), so thats a shame. read more

My mother and I LOVED this place. It was recommended by a friend for the chocolate palatschinken, but I had the apricot knödle (dumplings) and have never had anything better in my life (nothing!) so I've had that both times I've gone. It is truly elegant with no pretense. Perhaps not the extraordinary architecture or flashy array of desserts of Demel and other famous cafes of vienna, but VERY comfortable and welcoming with lots of light and without the hoards of tourists or pressure. If you truly want to sit back and enjoy a cafe, this is the real thing. read more
