I've been to Cafe Piccante several times and never been aware that they have a DJ playing! If they do, it's a pretty cool idea to keep the clubbers clubbing even during their pre-home munch. The food which this place produces is amazing. Their fried suppers are delicious as the batter which they use is light, crispy and thin. I came here after Movida once and had probably the best sausage supper I've ever had. The portion was sufficient for warding off the hangover, the sausage was pretty decent quality and the chips were fluffy and strangely non-greasy. This is one of my favourite post-club chippies and it also serves deep-fried Mars bars which will undoubtedly be incredible given the quality of their batter. Cafe Piccante gives great quality food at standard prices. It also has a speedy delivery service making it indispensable for lazy evening meals.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a bit of a touristy thing to do, but one of the things on my "to do" list for Edinburgh was to get........a deep-fried Mars bar. We asked a few locals, and got blank stares, but we finally found someone who was willing to point us the way (under his breath). Cafe Piccante is where we went (was also surprised to see it featured in the Scotland episode of the drinking show Three Sheets!). Walked up to it and it looked like your basic small fish and chip place, but upon further inspection, there it was, a big poster touting: "Get Your Deep-Fried Mars Bar Here!" So we walked in from the rain and ordered. My sister opted for hers a la mode. They were steaming hot--so, my sister had the right idea. It was a sugar-ultra-high!!! The consistency was fairly rigid due to the deep-fry, but the Mars bar was definitely mushy & melted inside. Tasted like a donut & a chocolate bar. You could clearly determine that what you were eating was BAD for you! My sister's b-friend said he ended up getting a head ache, and his teeth started hurting--his teeth!! All in all it was an experience. I think a la mode is the way to go, because the creaminess of the ice cream sort of helps cushion the sugar blow which smacks you upside your head. Oh, and I don't think you're limited to Mars bars here. You can try other forms of candy. I'm sure you could also have them deep fry a pizza, hot dog, haggis (of course), hamburger, salad---you name it (deep-frying is big in Scotland!).

Shortest review ever - basically this place sells the extreme novelty of Scottish 'deep fried mars bar' (actually they also sell deep fried pizza and deep fried Xmas pud too...thanks heart!) This could be the greatest thing ever if you love it but really isn't for me - I actually scraped the batter off of my 2nd part... For £2.90 it was expensive for what you get but hey you've got to try these things and 'regional specialities' in life! *This is also a fish and chip shop - seemed to be busy*

Since I was in Scotland, I figured that I should go to a proper chippy and try a deep fried Mars Bar for myself. This one happened to be just down the street from where I was staying, so I naturally had to come by here. Place looks like a typical greasy spoon. The cooks and the counter people were all friendly. I ordered a veggie burger for myself, which came out quickly and was pretty good. I then got my Mars Bar to go, but not before the counter person slathered caramel sauce all over it. The Mars Bar was actually pretty good and not nearly as horrible as I thought it was going to be. I was expecting an explosion of grease and chocolate in my mouth, but it had cooled down (the concoction was taken from a display case on the counter) and I was actually able to enjoy it. Not bad. Overall: 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 stars. I think this place is open until midnight also.

I'm not really a fan of chippies. Infact, the only time I really feel the need to have grease laden chips and soggy batter is when I'm by the seaside, and it's basically an unwritten rule. I have to say the best fish and chips I have had in ages came from this place, and it's kind of put me in the mood for Chip Shop takeaways more often! (goodbye diet!) The fish we had delivered was not greasy; instead, the batter was crispy and the fish just flaked away on the fork, a beautiful white colour that you rarely get from run of the mill chip shops. My auntie had ordered our meals online and they came within the hour, at a very reasonable price which was surprising. Possibly the nicest chip shop in Edinburgh, but I will let you know once I've tried them all! (I'll be the fat ball in the street with a greasy chin)

Deep fried mars bar that was surprisingly good. As if someone had intentionally crafted it from culinary skill, not as a novelty.

The sammiches come on a big, soft, delicious roll. And they're filled with a generous portion of pulled pork. You get to customize them a little bit by selecting your bread, the size of the sammich, the stuffing (sage and onion or the homemade haggis), and a variety of spreads (apple, homemade mustard mayo, homemade chili cheese, and homemade chili jam). My wife got the sage & onion, and I opted for a haggis filling. We both very much enjoyed our rolls. They were very filling, and the staff was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. The haggis was unique, but we are very familiar with pulled pork sammiches back home. We really enjoyed our meal and would definitely recommend Oink to any hungry travelers in Edinburgh.

There is usually a line outside this simple restaurant but possibly due to the light rain, the line was fairly short when I went. I only waited for like 5 minutes. The menu is simple as the roasted hog/pig is the only thing on the menu. You can choose a few things to customize the sandwich or even order it in a box. I ordered the Oink size (medium) on wheat bread and chose sage and onion for my topping and then the Homemade Mustard Mayo for the sauce. They make it in front of you and it is fresh and very tasty. Unfortunately when I went they were out of cracklings. They wrap it in foil and hand it to you. Pretty simple and efficient. I love that the outside of the building is painted pink like a pig (coincidence? Probably not). This is a good place to try for a quick, cheap and yummy sandwich. They do this one thing very well. One evening in Berkeley, California, out to dinner with some friends at a Korean restaurant, I…read moreshared that I was heading to Scotland in July of 2019 and asked if anybody had been and had any recommendations for places to go. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.
