Café Papeneiland is a traditional Dutch café for coffee and snacks. But really, I just wanted to try their apple pie! Well, I did get the apple pie, but also some bitterballen as I hadn't had any. Apple pie was actually sweeter than I was expecting and also sliced rather than in chunks. I thought it was good, but not better than some other apple pies I have had in the city. Bitterballen was good. Fried, very savory, and full of meat, can't go wrong with that combination. At the time we were here, there was only one person serving the entire café. Given that, I think he did a pretty good job with everything. Definitely worth the experience coming here! Wouldn't mind trying some other snacks on the menu as we had a dinner to go to so kept it light. read more

Really cool brown cafe from the 1600s! This is a traditional Dutch type of bar for a drink, coffee, snacks and hanging out. The staff are so friendly and efficient. It's very busy but they are good at moving things and giving service. At the end just tap to pay very easy. I came in for a coffee and apple pie and it is worth the hype. They make a great pie there is a letter on the wall signed by Bill Clinton because he visited and loved the pie. They have a newspaper article about him there. Seeing something about Bill Clinton was a funny thing. Go to this place if you are in Amsterdam even for just an hour or less. read more

Cafe Papeneiland is the one cafe in Amsterdam that is all over social media. To be fair, it is a cute cafe with beautiful Dutch tile work covering the walls inside it. I was really looking forward to visiting this cafe because I had read about how great their apple pies were. I only had limited free time in Amsterdam, but decided to prioritize checking out this cafe and went as soon as they opened in the morning. Unfortunately, this place did not live up to the hype. As I entered the cafe, the staff at this cafe just stared at me and did not even acknowledge me. I waited for a good five minutes until one staff member who seemed to be the only friendly one there finally acknowledged me and seated me at a table. At first I had thought that it was a language issue and no one other than this one waitstaff spoke English, but this was not the case. When I finally got my coffee and apple pie, I was disappointed to find that the pie was dry and flaky. The only good thing about it was that despite its huge size it was not overly sweet. However, I did not enjoy it and only finished half of it. The coffee was also too strong and bitter. The atmosphere was not comfortable as I felt ignored the whole time and I just wanted to pay and leave immediately. Again, it took a while for me to get someone's attention to get the check. The cafe took credit card, but they said that their machine was not working properly so they could not give me a copy of my receipt. I was on a business trip and wanted to get reimbursed for my meal so I asked them to give me a written receipt, but they refused. At that point I just wanted to leave so I did not bother arguing with the waitstaff, but I will not go back here on my future trips to Amsterdam. read more

It's one of the oldest cafes in Amsterdam dating back to the 1600's. Originally, I planned to visit in the afternoon, grab a nice seat by a window upstairs, order a slice of apple pie with coffee and take in the traditional vibe of the place. Didn't go exactly as planned. I happened to pass through in the evening, which is a completely different scene. The cafe turns bar at night so my pie/coffee turned into pie /beer. FYI This is a very LOCAL bar. Very few tourists. So, if you want to hang with some locals, here's your spot. These places in Amsterdam will surprise you. You never know how busy they are until you open the door. Most places are small, but they still manage to squeeze the town inside. It was so packed in there that I can't even give a full description of the place, all I could see was a sea of people. Sardine status. I still headed in because I'm stubborn and wanted my pie. They're known for having some of the best in Amsterdam but, honestly every place I had apple pie was good. They all have their little takes on them, but all enjoyed. Their apple pie had very thin sliced apples piled high, was a bit sweeter than Winkels and had more spices added like cinnamon, cardamon and a dab of raisins. Mine was served hot right out of the oven so it broke apart before fork landed. All the flavors hadn't settled either. The spices were stronger. I'm not complaining at all about this as it was still very good , but I did order it with whip and they either forgot or didn't put it on because the pie was still hot. It would have mellowed out the spices a bit that were still going strong from the heat. We stuck around for a while, hung out and had a couple of local beers enjoying the scene. I loved how there was no music played inside. Just everyone having a drink, talking amongst each other, laughing and enjoying each other's company. It's a very popular spot, very lively, very cozy once you get a seat, and I still want to come back during the day so I can experience a different vibe and see the interior in person. Twinkling fairy lights draped across a vaulted ceiling create a warm, rustic impression, and a casual assortment of seating both indoor and out make it easy for small groups to gather with friends. Our crew had a few drinks outside, sprawled comfortable across steps and stools, in full view of the canals. Later, we migrated inside for a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity.The owner, who was incredibly personable, shared the origin story of the establishment over drinks with us. It was such a nice and low-key way to end my trip to this fun and funky city! While I only visited at night and for drinks, I would absolutely return for breakfast or coffee. So after an absurdly small amount of jet-lagged sleep, I set off today into Amsterdam to take a meeting, then grab drinks with a local friend from Uni. Now, I have fallen in love with more than one bar/cafe in the Dam, and almost all of them claim some sort of "first" for their category - oldest pub, oldest filter tap, oldest original decor, etc. Papeneiland is one of those places, perpetually in the vague "old" category. Having said this, I love Papeneiland. The style points score as high as can be for me, with the antique wood-panelled walls accented by blue and white tiles, and a huge turn-of-the-century wood-burning stove. The staff was absolutely friendly, and one of the waitresses actually sat down with us and chatted about life in New York City (she's never been!) Despite the on-and-off cloudiness that has plagued my first full day of this trip, the massive ceiling-high windows that cover two of the walls in Papeneiland allow an almost perfect amount of natural light in, apparently no matter what the weather. It allows the place to be cozy, without being too seedy/hole in the wall. People who don't understand Amsterdam seem to think it is just hookers everywhere and canals flowing with day-glo bong water, but really it looks more like a scene out of a Bruegel painting, and no more so than from a table inside of this place. My meal schedule is all messed up, so I have been just eating small toasties and various fruits trying to get to some level or normalcy. Anywho, all I had here was a plate of frites, and a couple of beers - a Wieckse Witte, a De Koninck, and an IJ Columbus. All were delicious products of Benelux. I think that's what I love most about here. More than Germany, Austria, or anywhere else, they kill the beer scene in Holland. read more

Came here to meet for the beginning of our food tour and learned that this spot was created back in the 1600s! It use to be brown all over due to all the smoking but now it is just painted brown over. Apparently, Bill Clinton has visited here before too. A cozy little nook of a place, it's lit up with tons of twinkle lights and the upstairs loft is fantastic. Beers were cheap, which is rare in overpriced Amsterdam. As a tourist, I had to visit Cafe Papeneiland for their famous *apple pie, although their main business is a bar. (Sorry, I don't drink beer!) *In Dutch cooking, apple pie is more like American apple cake. There's no pie dough involved. I heard that even Bill Clinton came, under-covered to have this pie. This is yet another brown café that lives up to the press. It's decorated with beautiful tiles, floor to ceiling windows, lovely lights and a center piece of a stove. (If I win the lottery, some metal worker is making me a replica of that stove!) I think I could do an entire trip through Amsterdam in which I only drank and ate my way through brown cafés! In this particular instance, I was wary of the two hour drive through snow (back to Friesland) awaiting me afterward. I therefore ordered koffie met appelgebak. It was lekker! This apple pie type dish is house prepared and is served along side delicious fresh whipped cream (slagroom). People always say this about Europe, but the whipped cream does taste better there. (I have a feeling that European dairy is better as a result of their better laws for animal husbandry. But I'm no expert!) Go, and the memory of this stop will stay with you always. read more

This is an old fashion "brown bar" built in circa 1600. It is called "brown bar" because the customers were allowed to smoke in this type of bar until about 8 years ago, when these bars became smoke free. Besides the old era of this bar it has the best Dutch apple pie, here is where this type of pie was invented and it was passed on for generations. We got to meet the grandpa and son that are owners of this bar. They also have excellent espresso and cappuccino here. The Dutch apple pie is outstanding, even President Clinton was here for this pie, he purchased a whole pie and wrote a thank you letter to the establishment after his visit. The crust is crispy and a little more heavy than the typical flaky pastry of a regular pie. Apples are perfectly browned and cooked in brown sugar, absolutely mouthwatering. The slice of pie is served with HEAVY cream which brings even more richness and flavor to you taste buds. A must if you are visiting Amsterdam it is located in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam not too far from Central station. read more

A friend had recommended to try the apple pie at Papeneiland while in Amsterdam. I was really excited but my overall experience was bad. The man at the bar did not greet us and told one of my friends to leave the bar because she walked in with an ice cream, he could have asked nicely. When we walked in he only had 2 tables being used, outside was packed but you can tell they were all locals. Once we ordered the pie which he gave us melted whip cream (pie was not warm) we sat down at a table and we asked for one more fork so we can share and he told us no because we were using up his tables for one slice! I could understand if he was extremely busy inside but not the case. Pie itself was 7/10, earlier in the day we had another slice of apple pie at Winkle which was pretty amazing. Boy do I regret it, the pie tastes like any American apple pie and the guy at the bar was a dick. A cute little place with good prices and chill atmosphere. I feel like I could spend all afternoon in here sipping on beer. I had a class of cherry beer (can't remember what it was called sadly) and a cheese and tomato tosti and it was enough to tide me over until dinner. Update: I don't think I will be going in here anymore. Although there is a smoking room upstairs and people generally smoke outside I always exit just reeking of smoke. It's just not really my thing to be surrounded by smoke. The place is always packed too and for such a small place that can be tough. Decent place to get a coffee or a drink. Although there was nothing special about either of the drinks, the interior is designed nice, complete with wood burning stove. There was a smoking room upstairs which was packed. The view out to the street is fun to watch the people walk by. My only complaint is the service seemed a little hostile. We didn't get many smiles. Unfortunately, the other patrons although hey were locals were pretty rowdy and rude in general. I got some comments from them for minding my own business and hanging out.
