We went to watch the Ireland-France rugby yesterday, only partly to watch the rugby, and (if I'm being honest) mostly to try the chippy. We sampled the chicken nuggets, a sausage roll, a pastie, and of course a large order of "chips" (although as a heathen American I am inclined to call them french fries...) with curry sauce. YUM. And cheap -- nothing we ordered was more than 4€! Also on the menu: scampi (langostines rebozados to you Spaniards!), classic battered cod (bacalao rebozado), as well as pickled gherkins, pickled eggs, pies, mushy pies, and more. Two soups to start and a (lone) delightful-sounding cheesecake to finish. "All in typical chip shop fashion," says Paul! Lunch was served prix-fixe style (aka menu del dia), and amazingly, all 6 dishes we tried were winners. We each ordered different options in order to try them all, as described below: - Arugula salad with caramelized onions and goat cheese: Best salad ever! Everything was so fresh and melded together perfectly. I never want to eat another salad without goat cheese and caramelized onions. My husband was shocked at how good this was because he normally doesn't like salads. - Tomato and cucumber gazpacho: Light, refreshing, and full of flavor. - Pork roast with gravy: This was just insane. Super tender pork with crackling(!!), delicious gravy, and perfectly roasted potatoes and apples. Like something you'd find at the best British pub. - Bouillabaisse: Yes, I ordered a French dish at a British restaurant in Spain. And it was wonderful. The best seafood stew I've ever had. The fish was perfectly cooked, and bread dipped in the broth was briny magic. - Caramel and cinnamon custard: Exactly what it sounds like, only BETTER. To die for. I wanted to lick my bowl. - Pear and rosemary cake: A lighter dessert but still very tasty. At 25-30 euros per person, it's not cheap, but for the quality and quantity of food you get, it's 100% worth it. Our waiter was friendly and very patient with our poor Spanish skills. The restaurant was absolutely packed with locals, and it never died down, long after lunch was over. Try to finagle a reservation here if you can, but even if you can't, I would wait hours to eat here again.

Now, that's not to say that they don't try to throw some Spanish flair in there too because they do. The food is delicious and always served as a full portion. I've never left feeling that I needed more or that I didn't get enough. I have had the Guinness Stew twice now and each time it's been consistently scrumptious. My wife had the fish and chips, which is enough to satisfy any hunger. The mixed drinks are very delicious. We had a Long Island and a mojito. Both were tasty and perfectly balanced. The service is fast and prompt; they even speak English and have an English menu, which is a nice relief at restaurants in Spain. I personally suggest you sit outside under the canopy of bright green trees. While you dine, you'll be sandwiched between two beautiful and iconic glorietas, the Fuente de Cibeles and the Puerta de Alcalá. This place is great and I'll definitely be back again and again. The price is very reasonable and competitive. Their glasses are in 3 sizes - small, medium, large. The Medium is a good size as it is. 2 mediums and a small was only 10€. I also got a bottle that was €4 (50cl). It was hoppy and went PERFECT with a fried seafood plate I had it with when I got back home. Small tap room - as are all places in Spain, but they are brewing up some good stuff! Check them out!
