Cafe Leonar is super-classy. I hardly feel like I am classy enough to eat at this establishment. It came recommended by a friend who lives in the neighborhood. I was doing walks around the city before work, and although you can find a franzbrötchen around every corner, I was having trouble finding a proper breakfast in Hamburg.
The cafe is kind of a modern, classy, academic bar combined with a throwback kosher sensibility. The breakfast menu is organized geographically by destinations of the Jewish diaspora (Antwerp waffles, Brooklyn bagels, Tel Aviv hummus). I picked the scrambled eggs with dark bread and butter (bio-ruhrei), and a latte (milchkaffee). Everything was delicious. The portion on the eggs was a little small, and I would have liked some real bacon instead of turkey bacon, but when in Rome...
Everything was delicious, and the coffee was expertly made. The bartender was the waiter, and he was really friendly and attentive. The space is incredibly comfortable. It has a fairly dark interior, with beautiful tiling on the bar, and a lot of seating. There are newspapers on rods hanging on the wall, and books available if you're looking for a bigger commitment.
Highly recommended for a breakfast or even just a coffee if you're in the neighborhood. read more
