This is one of those really old school coffee houses in Vienna. Think everything that Starbucks is not! Warm, inviting, relaxed, slightly run down, free newspapers, good cheap food and drink and a place you are welcome to spend the whole day just sitting around. The prices are very decent and there is no pressure to finish up and get going. In fact if fast service is something you want then this place is not for you. As the gentleman working there explained, so few people have the time to just relax and wait for their coffee nowadays. Its all go go go..... So if you want somewhere very welcoming to park off for an hour or two catching up on the news or catching up with friends then this is the perfect place to come.

This place is such a gem. Why don't we have a place like this in NYC?? Totally retro decor - only bcoz nothing has been updated. Faded wallpapers and very old furniture are the very charm ppl like to come here beside good coffee and friendly ppl. You'd better to come before 11am when it can get full inside. We had breakfast here every day while in Vienna. No smoking inside and wifi works well. It is my and my husband's favorite spot to relax in Vienna!

Stopped in for breakfast before heading to Slovakia. The mocha espresso was strong and potent in jolting is awake for the day. The regular scrambled eggs were good but my ham and cheese omelet was slightly over cooked. It was still ok, I ate it all. The ambiance of the cafe made the visit enjoyable. It has a classic old European romantic appeal.

Great coffee at this old cafe style. Inside is vintage. Not very clean but it's not a problem. Summer days it's better to sit outside.

This became without any doubt one of my favorites cafés in Vienna! Right after passing the doors, I felt like time had stopped one century ago... The lay out is comfy and old fashioned, with lots of wood furniture and old armchairs (not always of the same hight!), which completely matched with the spirit of this place. I felt at ease in here right away. And in bonus: the smoking area is in the back of the café, so you can spend a nice moment without having to breath any smoke! :) The waiters look professional and quite proud, but are actually very friendly and attentive to their customers. As any good café local should, their coffees, mélanges, teas and other drinks taste just right. They also have a great offer in traditionnal cakes and appetizing breakfast, which will let you dream at first by reading it, please your nostrils by smelling it and then make your stomach very happy by tasting it! The first time I came, we were suppose to stay for one hour and ended enjoying 3 hours in this place. And we were not the only one! Only deception: as almost every traditionnal Viennese Cafés, they don't have soy milk.

It never got too loud and the place is more popular with locals than tourists, so it's very authentically Viennese.

With those thoughts in mind then I can only be thinking of the good old Cafe Rüdigerhof. This is one of the best chill spots in Vienna .... well actually maybe in all of Central Europe. When you think of Vienna ... and being in a cool-looking place with atmosphere .... and talking with friends ... and enjoying some tasty food and a good beer or wine ...just totally chilling - the Rüdigerhof is made to order. The Rüdigerhof has both an inviting interior and a super Schanigarten for warmer days & nights. The building it is located in is a Jugendstil landmark by the architect Oskar Marmorek. And then there's the food - a selection of tasty dishes from the classic Viennese Cookbook at very reasonable prices. I especially love to go there in the winter and get a warming Gulasch soup. There are rooms for smokers and non-smokers. The smoking room is the best because everyone stays late in this room and it has more of a buzz. It just feels more like a Viennese café. The non-smoking room is not bad - it's just smaller and not as cool. Anyway, I'm lucky that Café Rüdigerhof is so close to where I live. Everyone should have such a place in their neighborhood!

One thing my wife and daughter wanted to do in Vienna was to try the local cake, the Sachertorte…read more There are a few apparently famous venues for this (and a slew of other places too). Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.
