We both started with their elderflower aperitif--a wonderful cocktail that was citrusy and not too floral. For dinner, we thought that we were ordering a Caesar salad as a starter to share, but it came out with the main courses, and it was huge and had chicken on it and tasted nothing like Caesar, so we are *finally* learning our lesson that the Danes are clueless when it comes to this particular cuisine. We throw our hands up! The pork schnitzel was very good, nice and crispy, and we enjoyed the peas on the side, but why was the horseradish like a tangle of shredded noodles on top? Confusing! The moules frites our daughter ordered was massive, so that ended up being a waste of money because only a third of them got eaten. The accompanying fries had a tangy seasoning on them that we all loved. One of us also got the stjerneskud, a kind of smørrebrød, because it had to be done once. Imagine a massive piece of bread covered in a bernaise kind of sauce and now it's topped with smoked salmon, a thousand tiny shrimp, a grilled AND steamed plaice (a kind of whitefish). The thing was insane, hence the aforementioned overordering. Service is nice enough. The bill was sky high, which is our main reservation about this place, but it's our own fault at the end of the day for letting our eyes be bigger than our stomachs. We wouldn't necessarily recommend Mefisto at the end of day because we didn't Capital L Love it, but you can certainly have a nice meal here. 3.5 stars rounding up.

The 3 course menu tasted delicious, and also offered an excellent value proposition :-) The ambiance was warm, quiet, and charming; the service was totally on-point while being completely helpful and friendly. Everyone we encountered spoke excellent English, and made us feel more like guests than customers. My only regret is that we visited here on the last night of our stay in Arhus - I look forward to returning next trip!

Grappa is "one of those places by the canal" as they're collectively known in Aarhus, and for good…read morereason. With one cafe right next door to the other, and their massive outdoor seating areas blending together, it is hard to tell where one stops and another begins. Unlike the somewhat ambiguous café-style cuisines of most of the other places, Grappa has chosen a clear route: up-scale Italian. And they do this quite well. Their pizzas are good, expect high-end ingredients and a lovely thin, Naples-style crust, though not quite soggy enough in the center to really be a true Naples pizza (probably to cater to most non-Italians, who would describe this style as "undercooked"). The pizzas are not cheap, with a simple Margarita coming in at well over 100 DKK. Their other dishes are equally well-made, and are variations on Italian classics, such as risotto and pasta carbonara. One thing I really appreciate at this place, is that they offer all of their pizzas and pasta dishes in a smaller, child-friendly size, and with appropriate tweaks to the recipe to make them OK for kids, rather than having an actual children's menu. Most places that have that, typically fill it with pretty boring stuff (nuggets and fries, anyone?), and if you have a food-loving kid, that's a bum rap. The service here is probably the main drawback. They come off as busy, sure, but also a bit full of themselves, you don't really feel that you're appreciated as a guest. So expect good food, but also a large, crowded place, where you're a bit just one guest out of many and is treated as such.

Got the orange gravy, pork chunks, and sausage plate with rice. They offer "half portions" to sample but for us it was pretty much a full meal. Danyar Fish n Chips: Kids really wanted this and they had samples to try. Tasted OK, they are trying to do British style and the fries were good as well as the fish, just not as good as they are in the UK. Duck It: Had the duck boat which is pieces of duck in a fried potato shaped like a boat, this one was my wifes favorite.

Which brings us back to Aarhus Street Food! Like Reffen, it's got an amazing vibe. There's a large outdoor space for boozing and hanging out and then there are several vendors indoors with a bunch of picnic benches in the middle set up almost like a beer garden. Our daughter chose unwisely: the "maki" option from Shogun sushi, a selection of very sad and supermarket-looking sushi. No matter, we were happy to be there to soak up the atmosphere and energy. Plenty of the other food around us looked really good and the place is just worth a visit of its own accord. Four stars.
