Also the wines they have are excellent! We decided to take a bottle of an Australian Shiraz and really loved it. Our waiter was happy that we were happy with our choice, and even came back with some other bottles that he could recommend if we liked this wine :) The food was just amazing! I started with the steamed bread with a crocodile curry and had the kangaroo steak as the main dish. After the waiter came to take the plates I told him that I just had one remark about the dish: they should be BIGGER :) There actually was nothing left on my plate again and I think I even started to take of the top-layer of the stone of the plate because it still had some flavor :) The dessert was a Caribbean cheesecake and if it is still on the menu, really can recommend it. Actually used my fingers to get the last bits of taste out of the plate, because it was so good :) Because this place has such good food, it is quite busy. Really recommend making a reservation if you want to eat here.

The Gin Sum Club is in the old Rabobank building, but aside from the facade and the vault, which…read morethey left open in the basement across from the bathrooms, you'd never know it used to be a bank. The interior is spacious with tranquil lighting and modern appointments. It's got a deliberate NYC look and the requisite Cool Jazz/Be Bop playing in the background. There's a central bar, but the main spaces are dedicated to either intimate seating or larger group tables. An open kitchen finishes off the look. The food is divided into a small bites (dim sum, tapas, whatever you like to call it) menu with about 20 items and a more traditional full menu. The small bites menu is asian fusion while the full menu is merely asian inflected. My friend and I sat at the bar and had a few small bites - shrimp gyoza, duck spring rolls and the (in Holland anyway) requisite spare ribs. The food was delicious with its balanced flavoring and interesting accents, freshly prepared and sparely but pleasantly presented. The cocktails, on the other hand, were disappointing. Not bad, just not what one hopes for at a self-proclaimed cocktail bar. They certainly had a good selection of liquors and an outstanding selection of mixers to complement them, but I'm afraid that, at least when we were there, attention to detail was lacking. For example, the bartender did not chill my glass before pouring my martini into it, then a few minutes later lost an ice cube from a drink he was mixing and didn't notice it sitting on the bar melting all over the menu I had been reading. The drinks themselves were adequate but lacked that extra bit of attention to detail a mature cocktail bar offers. There were a few other problems such as when our bartender suggested a couple of dishes and put the order in before we, um, actually ordered it. Granted, it was Sunday evening, and slow, and otherwise the front of the house looked well run, so perhaps this was just an off night for our bartender. But I'm confident the Gin Sum Club will work these problems out (again, if they are actually problems and not just an off night for one dude). I really hope this place does well despite what must be their astronomically high rent; having a high end cocktail bar with a versatile menu has been one of the few types of place Haarlem has long missed. It remains to be seen if Haarlem and the surrounding neighborhoods are willing to support such a business. I'll certainly be back to give t hem another try and hopefully add a start or two to this review. In short: the back of the house is already humming along, and the front of the house will likely follow; it's a high end destination great for business meetings, date nights with the wife and/or expensive mistresses or a place to impress expat friends.

My friend, her young son, and I ordered 3 small plates and one of the sushi options. The flavors were balanced and the quality of the ingredients shined on each dish. However, the portion sizes were much smaller than expected considering the price for each item. Even my friend's son said, "I'm still hungry," after we finished what we had ordered. Overall, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was classy. I feel it is a great option for drinks and appetizers.

We went based off the website boasting high end small dishes. We were anticipating thoughtfully prepared Asian fusion cuisine in an elegant setting. We ordered the tasting menu. None of the dishes were inspired. The menu started with an oyster in the half shell with a nice Asian version of a mignonette. The mignonette was excellent but the oyster itself was a little fishy. The sashimi that followed was good but identical to sashimi anyone can get in any decent sushi restaurant. The black cod followed. Like the sashimi, it was good but nothing special. The last main was seared wagyu. It was nicely cooked but the sauce was a completely uninspired sweet sauce that actually detracted from the taste of the meat. The tulip pot dessert was hands down the high point. It was the one part of the menu that felt in any way inspired. The service was friendly but very slow and very disjointed. The music was too loud to allow a meaningful conversation. The dining room is thoughtfully designed and actually quite cool. So, if you're looking for a club that serves mediocre uninspired Asian fusion cuisine, by all means go for it. If you're looking for a nice restaurant with thoughtful Asian fusion dishes, you might want to look elsewhere.
