I travel to Berlin once a year and always make a point of stoping by Barbucha. This year on a quiet rainy Saturday afternoon I stopped by with my kids. We bought Kambucha and sat outside at an empty table while it was drizzling. The owner came out in a very unnecessary hostile manner complaining that we were taking up too much space while plenty of other seats were still available. I planned to go and buy more kombucha however that aggressive and unfriendly interaction left me with a sour taste. Unfortunately my yearly tradition has ended. read more

This is the place to come for the best kombucha in Germany...if not in all of Europe. Ted - the owner - is not afraid of experimenting, and the proof was in the excellent kombucha where he goes beyond simple green and black tea bases. He has over 10 different tea/plant bases, including my new favorite, guayasa (sustainably sourced from the Peruvian Amazon). They also use unrefined brown sugar, which created a lot more complexity and depth (vs refined white sugar). read more

We came in a few minutes after 5pm and the kitchen has already closed. By Ted and his wife took care of us anyway. We were offered complimentary samples of all of the kombuchas (all were delicious but the jun really stood out), and Ted said he would make us food anyway. After a few minutes of hearing Ted chop veggies and mix items, delicious smells began to waft out of the kitchen. A little later out came a beautiful vegan lentil pinto bean burger with fermented ketchup and an amazing melange of spring vegetables with potatoes and grains. The food was delightful and the conversation about kombucha brewing methods afterward was insightful. An amazing vegan meal and probiotic rich refreshment. I'd definitely go back!!! read more

I had sandwich italiano and kombucha classic. I think they add honey in kombucha. It tastes a little bit like beer but not that much alcohol. I think it tastes more like beer than tea(which means "cha" in Chinese). And it tastes also very much like a kind of drink in my hometown-xinjiang province, China, called gewas(格瓦斯), which comes from Russia and tastes also like beer very much. When I've seen that there was a place near my house where they served RAW (yes RAW not pasteurized!!) Kombucha I knew I had to come! I finally went there today and it was amazing. I got to at first have a taste of their classic Kombucha and their Ginger kombucha, to see if I like it (I really appreciated the gesture cuz it's true sometimes even if you've heard the best of something you never know if you'll like it till you've tasted it) and I loved it! So I had a glace of Kombucha! It comes in a fancy champagne kind of glass and really tastes amazing. We had couscous risotto and a open Halumni Tomato Avocado sandwich with sauerkraut made with Kombucha vinegar (!!!) all delicious!!! But the reason I loved this place was because of their Owner. Two really nice and passionate person with whom we had really interesting discussion about the history of Kombucha but also New Delhi's traffic jams ! We got to see the Kombucha mother that was really interesting as well! They apparently make sometimes cake with Kombucha... can't wait to taste it!!! This kombucha is seriously incredible. No extra sugars, syrups or soft drinks added. It is as complex as any wine, beer or espresso. Floral notes abound. But each glass is unique! The owner Ted showed me how he brews and ferments his drink in-store and we chatted a while about food philosophy and taste. He is the real deal when it comes to caring exactly what goes into each dish and how it tastes on the other side. The food is also phenomenal. Though it changes daily, I tried the roasted eggplant on focaccia and it was incredible. Thankfully, I'm staying only two blocks away so I can pop into this place regularly. read more

So I had just landed in Berlin for the first time ever on a Friday morning and was pretty hungry but wanted to wander around and get a feel for the city. I started walking in Mitte, made my way to the Tiergarten, then headed south toward Schöneberg. I was starving at this point and checked my Yelp app to find a nearby place with vegan options. Café Bärbucha showed up and looked good, so I made my way over. Turns out they have two things on the menu each day: a salad and a sandwich. The owner described the salad to me since I don't know much (any) German and couldn't read the menu. It included lots of great vegetables, including some fermented (that's a theme here since they also have 13 kinds of house-made kombucha). I ordered the salad, and it was SO GOOD. I was in Berlin for a week, and this is the only place that I made a second trip back to before leaving for another meal. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the food is awesome, and the kombucha, which they let you sample before buying, is great too. If you're looking for Kombucha in Berlin, Café Barbucha is the place to go. Their Kombucha is simply divine, made with the best quality ingredients with amazing attention to every detail. They even make Jun which is based on a slightly different SCOBY that thrives on honey - something I've never seen anywhere else, even in the stores in the US where Kombucha is more readily available.
