Cadwaladers Cafés is a small Welsh chain best known for its delicious, creamy ice creams, with a fairly extensive range of unusual flavours - all of which are said to contain a secret ingredient. The latest flavour their team is testing is Plum Cheesecake with a ginger nut base, which gives you an idea of how adventurous some of their flavours are... This Cardiff Bay branch is more contemporary than most of their other outlets. Built on a small pier jutting out into the Bay, the café provides panoramic views of the Barrage, the Victorian Pierhead building, the Millennium Centre, and the National Assembly building. It's a great spot on a calm and sunny day, but can be fairly windswept when it's not! While they also serve teas, coffees, and other bits and bobs, it's the ice cream most people flock here for. You can enjoy your ice cream in cones, on waffles, sandwiched in a scone, or with fruit and syrup - but however you have it, it's very good quality. Open as late as 10pm on some summer evenings, you can even grab dessert and coffee there after a meal at one of the Bay's restaurants.

It's a hot day, your down the bay and you want some cool refreshing ice cream. Cadwaladers has a variety of flavours and the location is bizarre, it sits on a peer jutting out from the busy street. Busy every time I've been there, you'll have to queue so expect to wait 5minutes. It feeds your desert desires, it's a shame there's a lack of seating. The shop is small so don't expect to get a seat just because you're a paying customer. There's something a bit odd about this one like it's a ice cream van without the ability to move. I like to try a variety of ice creams and Cadwaladers certainly has variety and taste.

Nice ice cream parlor on the water. Line was out the door. You can pick flavors, cones flavor, then toppings. I had Orange Ripple (basically Orange Cream), Sticky Toffee Pudding, and Banana Ripple (banana ice cream with chocolate sauce). They were very good. Creamy and rich. The only issue was the line was long. The setup was not very efficient.

Busy place, obviously a crowd favorite. No complaints. Seating is tight inside, hang onto your wig if you sit outside.

I've only had a coffee. Sat inside overlooking the bay on a freezing cold day, it was nice.

"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream", is the utterly inspired chant by one of the…read morekey characters in a film portraying a trio of escaped convicts... no, not Oh Brother Where Art Thou... It's an earlier film, but one that shares a strikingly similar sentiment, treatment and ultimate message. Like Oh Brother, it wraps the most profoundest ideas in humour, as do all the essential truths in life as far as I can tell, whether they be real of fictionalised... And what has this got to do with Ice Master? The answer to that is simple. Nothing! It's just that I can't contemplate ice cream these days without the "I scream, you scream..." mantra kicking off inside my head... so I thought I'd share! Ice Master is part of Rainbow Bargain, a huge home and garden store, which occupies the former Methodist Church where Wellfield Road meets Albany Road in Roath. As this rather large shop is seemingly manned singlehandedly by the very lovely husband and wife team of Tiziano Cirillo and Hui Cirillo, there is, somewhat unsurprisingly, a notice asking you to ring a bell for service. The access to the ice cream shop is garnered exclusively from the street, and so if one of the two of them stood in wait for customers to arrive, they would not only get pretty bored as they'd have very little to do, but the adjoining shop would be flung into a state of pure chaos behind them! Rainbow Bargains appears to be manned by the couple alone, which is startling if it is true. Although small by comparison to other DIY, garden and home centres, they still carry an inordinate amount of stock, some of which is very heavy. I can't imagine the shelves being replenished by only two people, (may be they get the crew in to do this when the store is closed? I hope so!) It's my considered opinion, especially in view of the meagre staffing levels, that the ice cream concession is just a little bit crazy. I'm regularly guilty of trying to bite off more than I can chew in this world... it seems I'm not alone! Perhaps the "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream" adage will take on a whole new meaning for this delightful couple, if they read this review?! Chances are they won't have time though... what d'ya reckon?

IAMSUBZERO (new name for Mr Creemy) is available here. It's a great idea for a side-business because as far as I know there's no where else around this part of Roath selling soft scoop ice creams in cones, and since this place is only a short stroll away from Roath Park it makes a good stopping off point en route. As they're generally busy in the main shop, you have to ring a bell to get their attention - then someone will soon come to serve you!

As you will see, they have written Sub, followed by a numerical zero, with 100 written in the middle, then ended with the word zero... heh!?! Anyway, to cut straight through the confusion, here's my take on it.... I reckon that the 100 has nothing to do with the street number of the business, which was my original summation... instead, I think it has more to do with the amount of items on the menu... there's one hundred different kinds of subs, ice creams and cakes available at the fast food eatery... and, as an aside, I think that's what inspired the name... you know, the subs... geddit! Moving on... I think the 0 numeral accompanied by the word zero is just simply a case of over-egging the pudding, or perhaps both have been used for clarities sake? Yeah right...! Or, have they done it just in case any of their customers are dyslexic? Or numerically challenged? But then why use so many digits in the first place...? Wow, all this thinking makes you hungry! Sub anyone? By the way: they have seating for those that want to eat in... There's approximately 12 chairs, 4 tables, one sofa, plenty of silverware, and 246 toothpicks...

I personally think Sub Zero is an absolutely fantastic name for a store that sells sandwiches and ice cream; it's one of those colloquial phrases that sets itself into the collective mind of a society and is just waiting to be plucked up by an entrepreneur and have a business built around it. The cafe boasts a menu of over 100 snacky treats which, whilst it seems a little high, is actually quite plausible when you enter the store and see the layout. The main sandwich counter has a massive display, with ready made sandwiches waiting to be picked up, or fillings you can ask for yourself. The ice creams are impressively colourful and I was pleased to find they had my favourite flavour there (I'm not telling you what it is, because if everyone goes and eats it and I get none, I'll have only myself to blame). They also offer a selection of cakes for your enjoyment, all at reasonable, sub-Subway prices, happily.

Now that summer has hit (then gone underground for a while, before returning in all its full glory), the queues running outside this ice cream shop can be a little bit ridiculous, and I'm not really one for waiting. So, unfortunately, its own popularity can work against it in this place. But the selection of ice cream is really great, and it tempts me every time I wander past. The prices are reasonably when compared to the like of Ben & Jerry's, but far more expensive than a regular ice cream van, of course. But seeing as, so some reason, the van usually parked in Bute Park seems to be sadly absent whenever I want cooling down in that area of the centre, Baskin Robbins is the only other viable option. Hence the queues.

So imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon the newly opened 'Baskin Robbins' down Castle Street opposite Cardiff Castle. The colours and the smells of all that cake and ice cream will make you visit without a moments thought. When I entered it was completely empty. Not even the staff member was there. This confused me, so it didn't give me the greatest first impression but I wasn't going to let that bring me down because after all I was there for the ice cream. The amount of choice was incredibly high so I felt spoilt for choice. I got one of their sundaes called cookies and cream (my version of heaven) and it was the sugar charged treat that I wanted. The amount of choice is fantastic. Not only that, you can have ice cream cakes make for you or for an occasion. My mouth waters as I keep writing this piece and there will soon be puddle on the floor. Baskin Robbins is a wonderful world filled with treats and cakes, it may be a little out of the way but it shouldn't stop you visiting to indulge in the cakes and cream they provide.

I've noticed recently, and I wonder if anyone else as well, that there have been a crop of businesses in the last few years that charmingly possess more substance than style. I'm sick to death of these slick, pretentious cafes that offer little more than Tesco-quality sandwiches at a premium price. Caffe Gelato is a welcomed reprieve, with a quaint and bustling atmosphere (it was a Saturday, after all), and in a perfect position to catch all of the tourists in the castle's orbit. Now for the gelato: The apple crumble I had was creamy and delicious, and the fact that it was a warm day made it all the more enjoyable. Caffe Gelato, however, has sprung up here recently, and offers tourists, shoppers and workers a new city centre café to grab a drink, some lunch, or a generous gelato. When I've wandered past it's generally been busy with customers wolfing down delicious looking paninis and salads, sipping a mug of coffee, or enjoying a smoothie. I've only tried their gelato, however, which is very good - but it's worth knowing that they actually have a far wider menu than their ice cream-themed title would suggest, if you want a full on lunch. The perfect place to cheer yourself up on a damp and drizzly day, or to grab an ice cream on your way to Bute Park when the sun's shining!

If this was my first and only time visiting, I would probably give 2 stars. However, because I know they've been great in the past I know they can improve from this. ~ Drinks: The drinks were still fine. I decided to break from my usual flavours and because it was Christmas, I went for a Gingerbread Milk Tea sans pearls, and it was very nice. ~ Customer Service: The main downside here. Everyone was really friendly, but had no organisation or management skills. Not only did the cashier get my partner's drink order wrong, but the drinks came really slowly. For just a few drinks, it literally took 10 minutes, and that's not counting the wait for someone to come to the register and take our order. Upon closer inspection, it was 1 guy doing everything from making the drinks to dealing with the huge queue of customers. The other 2 employees there were busy chatting and organising / cleaning the station. Okay yeah I recognise that things need to be washed and cleaned, but when there's a LOAD of customers waiting for orders to be taken shouldn't the list of priorities change? My entire family runs on hospitality and normally the list of tasks changes depending on the situation. If there's a long queue of customers both at the register and waiting for their drinks, washing spoons isn't a f*cking priority, is it? --- Sorry for the angry rant but I'm really hoping this is an isolated incident so I can give Bubble Base their 4th star back. I had a look at the other customers waiting and we were all visibly annoyed; employees didn't really seem to care.
