You're really not gunna find a restaurant that has really fresh ingredients that are organic and have it be super cheap. Sure, you can maybe make some of the stuff (like the smoothies and juices) at home for cheaper but the point is I don't want to do that nor do I have time. So that's why this place is awesome. As far as the food goes...good luck recreating that and have it be as tasty. First I'd like to mention that I am not vegan and I do not eat an all raw diet. But I occasional enjoy getting vegan options and trying vegan restaurants. So when I tell you that the burrito is amazing, I dont just mean in vegan terms. We stumbled upon Cacao Tree Cafe on a walk down 4th street, so we decided to stop in and check it out. They have a nice selection of Raw Vegan foods, fresh juice elixirs, and smoothies. Definitely lots of healthy food, and from what we tasted: the nori rolls & the not your mama's nachos, were pretty good! For food i'd give it a 4, but the prices were very high. Do I love that there is a raw food restaurant in town? Yes, absolutely! Am I okay with a raw takeout lunch for for two (sandwich, side salad, and a juice) costing $50?? Nosirree Bob, I am not! This place is clean, the owner is very friendly and sweet, but on several occasions when I've been there, there seems to be five or more people working, but no real system in place for getting things done. Once they forgot to charge me for my food, handing me the takeout bags and saying goodbye so they could return to their conversation. I had to interrupt to ask to pay. Other times, whomever was supposed to be making my juice was perhaps distracted, meaning an additional wait to get that part of the order. Another time, I left and discovered that part of the order was missing. When I went back, the girl at the counter told me, "Oh, you have to get that out of that case over there yourself." Okay, guys, so TELL your customers that. I do really like their fake egg salad sandwich. Their raw juices are about twice the price of the ones at Anita's. If I'm feeling flush, am not in any kind of hurry, and don't mind hanging with a group of well-meaning twenty-somethings who have clearly had their 4:20 break pretty recently, then I go here. read more

3 stars for really thoughtful and tasty food. I never imagined raw food could be so darn good! The raw cinnamon roll was good but very sweet and impossible to cut through. We had to rip it. With our hands. Yuck. The dehydrated falafel was AMAZING! Spot on with texture and taste, although very salty. The collard wraps were fresh and tender with delectable fillings. The granola was fairly bland. I did enjoy it with coconut milk and the 'super fruits' I chose. Soups were a blazing hot temperature and ok in flavor. Smoothies were excellent. I have had some periods in my life where I was efforting and reasonably successful at doing a raw food diet... However for me, usually I would get so hungry, so tired, so bored with the repetitive nature and taste of the foods that invariably I would shift back into my 'barbarian' state. The other day I was TREATED (Yes, I say TREATED, because I was treated and it was a TREAT) to a late lunch at Cacao Tree... I have 3 words to describe the flavor, texture and overall meal: 1. A 2. Maze 3. Ing Really delicious raw food. We split Nachos. Guess what? The chips, the Pico, The Guac, the sour cream (made from whatever I have forgotten) were actually better than the nachos I have had at bars. Truly. Unbelievable. We also split a 'bagel' platter... It's incredible how they have nailed the flavors... For desert we split a 'hemp butter bullet' which was basically a peanut butter cup... The cacao was so intensely good... When raw food can be prepared and served with such amazing attention to texture and flavor, then truly there's no reason ever to eat any other way... unless you choose to. Well done Cacao Tree... Yes, the raw food movement is hogwash, but I love fresh veggie food, and was super excited to try Cacao Tree. This place, however, didn't do it for me. The seating arrangement is small, and it gets rather packed when busy, which is a good thing. I found it a bit strange that you order at the counter (and have food brought to table). As for the food, when you charge $12 for a wrap, it better be pretty damn good. It was merely "ok." The same goes for the quesadilla. It doesn't matter if it's raw, vegan, etc., etc.: above all, it must taste good. I had the quinoa special wrap. It didn't seem like much care was put into constructing it - just a scoop of quinoa, some lettuce, the tiniest amount of avocado (come on!), and some dressing. It tasted fine, but would never induce any ecstatic eye-rolling. The beverage options include juices (starting around $7) and smoothies ($8.95) as well as free water (serve yourself) from a cooler. I usually stick with water anyhow, but there's no way I can spend that much on juice. If you are super crunchy (as opposed to Midwest rusty), you may be able to overlook the things which irked me. But, based on the food alone, I would not choose to come back. read more

I love raw food. I really do. I seek out raw food restaurants wherever I go, so I was thrilled when I heard about Cacao Tree. My first visit was a few months after they opened. I had a burrito wrapped in collard green. It was good. Not great, a bit messy, but good. I returned for the first time last weekend to meet a couple of friends for a little girl's lunch. I had the same dish, served as a salad. It was great! They skimped on the avocado (which was a bummer because I'd been craving avocado like mad since a trip out west), but the walnut "meat" was spicy and flavorful, and the cashew sour cream was great. This salad was killer. Really. I also got an I-Thrive smoothie. The name was reminiscent of Cafe Gratitude, a great place in LA, but sadly this smoothie wasn't nearly as good as any of the juices I've gotten there. I want to LOVE this place. I want to scream about it to passing strangers. Unfortunately, I'm a bit annoyed (or maybe just disappointed) that the menu doesn't have more variety, and though there was a variety of smoothie and juice options, none of them had me salivating at the mere description (and normally when I look for fresh juice, I find myself fighting back the urge to try 2 or 3 different juices). Absolutely amazing menu selection for vegans, vegetarians, and raw food enthusiasts! This cafe is a little hole in the wall joint that I literally walked past twice while searching for it. Use Street View on Google Maps before your first visit. The seating is limited, but works well since this place is frequented by the small minority population of Americans that care about what they eat. The food is nutritionally dense and so filling. I thought my serving of breakfast granola was a little small for the price, but in the end I couldn't even finish it all. The desserts are a great treat that shouldn't be passed up! My only complaint is that it gets a little loud in the cafe when the staff is making raw juice. Since this is a raw haven, that occurs about every 10-15 minutes. One of my absolute favorites. The Spice of Life smoothie is straight amazing. The food is so fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. I've tried wraps, salads, soups, smoothies, and specials. Not once have I been semi-disappointed with the quality of the food. I went with my mom last week and we just sat there, awestruck, and she said "we really need to come here...at least once a month". Pesto mushrooms=awe, mexican salad=awe, cashew nougat chocolate=awe. I usually order one of the specials and I can't remember the names of all of them. Either way, AWE. I've tried two things that didn't quite suit me but that can't be blamed on the quality of the food. I tried the french onion soup which was interesting but vegan cheese just isn't the same as real cheese. Cashew cheese is a bit sour and doesn't have the same consistency. However, it whoops the ass of Daiya cheese, which I tried once and decided it tasted like mutated goo. ALSO, the smoothies containing ginger are a little heavy on the ginger. If you like ginger, cool. If you're meh about it I would advise either asking them to go easy on it or get a smoothie that doesn't have ginger in it. If it made sense for me to eat 3 meals a day here it would be easy to become a vegan. One of my best friends introduced me to this place and I am hooked. Simultaneously healthy AND tasty? Jackpot. Shame you, white castle. People are complaining about the prices, but when everything is taken into consideration the prices are extremely reasonable. For one, this is organic raw vegan food. Probably local. If you haven't checked out the organic section at the supermarket, you will find that the prices are a few notches higher than the regular section. You will also see the workers making things like pesto and vegan "meat" (blend of nuts). It isn't a quick service place because everything is made to order (except maybe the daily soup). The workers don't get tipped like they do in traditional restaurants. There's a tip jar, but that's it. Also, downtown Royal Oak doesn't provide cheap commercial real estate and vegan food has a limited audience. Also, their cups and to-go boxes are all bio-degradable. So quit your whining, BROS. Or go somewhere cheaper. Moral of the story: prices are not high for the quality. It 's pretty easy for me to find a restaurant with similar pricing and questionable quality. So i'll pay for the quality and skip blowing my money on butter-coated chain Italian food. Writing this review makes me want to go there now. Damn it! haha read more

We have just begun a vegan-wanna-be lifestyle so this place was first on our list to try. Now that I've tried it, I would eat here vegan or not! We ordered the burrito, the General Tsaos lettuce wraps and a strawberry shortcake smoothie. The entrees use nuts as the base for the "meat" filling and it's really delicious. The sour "cream", (made from almond milk?), is A-MAY-ZING!!!! Everything just tastes really really fresh and crisp and exciting, and you feel full but great afterwards. Yes, he price is STEEP... $32.00 for the two plates and the smoothie, but you're paying for the quality. And honestly, this was A LOT of food for my daughter and I. (And she's a cavernous 14). We actually would've been happy splitting the burrito and walking around town with it. We just wanted to try everything. The smoothies are also double servings, so if you can agree on one with a friend, you're better off sharing. read more

Let me start by saying that while I'm a vegetarian, I've never been particularly persuaded by the raw food movement--in fact, I can't imagine eating most of my food (un)cooked. But if the Cacao Tree Cafe were preparing food for me everyday, I'd happily eat raw on a more regular basis. I've been here with my co-workers a few times (we're a collection of one vegan, one vegetarian, and three omnivores) and we've all been thrilled with our food, even the very skeptical omnivore. The food is fresh and their menu clearly notes when something has been cooked. I've had the soups, sandwiches, and burritos, plus some of their specials and everything has been tasty. While I've never tried the desserts, they certainly look tempting and delicious. The only reason I've passed is that I like the feeling of slight moral superiority after having eaten such a healthy lunch...although I suppose I could then make the argument that I deserve to have one :-). If you've never had raw food, I'd definitely recommend this place as a good choice for beginners--friendly and knowledgeable staff and menu items that are healthy, but not too "out there" for a newbie. read more

What a pleasant surprise having lunch here!!! A new, delicious and healthy way to enjoy some food out! Came here with my friend today at lunch time and tried the curry soup and tacos! Both were delicious! My friend tried the quesadilla and loved it as well! I am a meat eater and an even bigger cheese eater :) and I was not missing either during my meal... They also have a nice variety of fresh juices on the menu, and I can't wait to try them next time I come in... Maybe I went on a bad day, but the burrito was not good at all. First of all, for $10 it was a very small and skinny and I am almost positive that they use store bought flour tortillas in other words not made from scratch. Second, the burrito was way too salty for my taste. Third it had no real flavor. I tasted vegetables but other than that it was flat. I much prefer the nachos and quesadillas option from the vegan place in Birmingham (Try it Raw). Their fake meat tastes like seasonings and not straight up salt. I am giving this place three stars because the smoothie, while also overpriced, was actually tasty. I had the Hawaiian with Ginger. Overall, I don't recommend the burrito. Raw vegan organic food is not for everyone, and usually not for me. I have tried a few other local places and been disappointed. Cacao Tree however was quite tasty. We had the "burrito" wrapped in a collard greens leaf. Yummy. The special of the day, a raw vegetable tostada was quite good too though the portion was embarrassingly small consider the $11 price tag. The rice salad may have been the star of the evening. Ginger, kale and lemon. My sweetie is still questioning my giving of our leftovers to a homeless man. Downside- noisy when the blender is on, which is often- yummy smoothies. I find myself lunching at this restaurant pretty often, even though it's kinda far from work, but the tasty healthy food they offer is worth the drive. Customer service is great, everyone is very amicable and courteous. I like that they have the different raw and cooked soups everyday, and that food is made to order. I don't mind paying a little more for fresh, organic produce, that is made almost always right in front of me, especially when it is so tasty and prepared with such meticulousness. My recommendations: the Burrito with the sprout wrap, so delicious that one forgets how healthy it is; Bee Green smoothie; any of their soups; and finally, their dressings are all really something else. I was desperate for raw food!! And just like a dream I found the Cacao Tree and Amber!! I am visiting from Los Angeles and presently I am on a very strict raw food diet . I was so sick of salad. When I walked into the cacao tree I was met by a very warm and helpful staff. I ordered an entire weeks worth of food. Amber helped me and put everything together. She made it so easy!
