Cabrillo has a lot of great resources for students as well. There's the HUB which offers free tutoring, the writing center with computers to use and more free tutors, a great library, bike co-op where you can repair your bicycle yourself and also get parts, a good amount of clubs, sports teams , a beautiful recital hall which is new as are most of the music and arts buildings( gorgeous!!!). The one thing I have an issue with is the cafeteria and food. The cafeteria itself is pretty dumpy looking and has a downer vibe. The food court is just sad. Super small, and packed with junk food and an owner with an ego. I'm so disappointed. The only vegan options are a salad bar and let's face it, vegans eat way more than salads, salads were so 1990's! Lol. Seriously though, how about some beyond meat veggie burgers, and some non dairy yogurt and plant based milks? How about some healthy foods ? They also have great services for veterans, people with disabilities, and learning difficulties. Cabrillo is like my second home and I will always have a place in my heart for Cabrillo.

Porter College is a great place to live your first few years in college. Friendly and interesting…read morestudents, tons of activities put on by the residential advisers(RAs), supportive staff and beautiful scenery. There are ocean view from some places, a cool Squiggle sculpture, dorm room, apartments and a meadow. They even have a koi pond and an art gallery! There is lots of grass and open space which is nice for hanging out/playing games. In the warm months there are people tanning, playing Frisbee, playing instruments and relaxing in general. The focus of the residential college is the arts, so it is a pretty colorful and there is always something going on.

You have the meadows to go star gazing at night to the epic 420 day where all the action is. I am glad I was assigned to this area since it was renovated and remodeled. That means new everything! New bathrooms, rooms, furniture clean and free of funky smells! The A side building is much cleaner and newer vs. the B side building. Each floor had their own lounge, but I heard that it does not exist anymore and are used as rooms except for the only lounge on the 6th floor. One side of the building can have gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and the sunset. I lived in the 6th floor and you had a choice to wait for the slow elevator or stride up the soaring six flights of stairs and feel good since it's a long way up. Along with long stride up, the dining hall which nearby that you can walk to grab some food and hit back to your room. Next to the dining hall is a small cafe if you get hungry and the dining hall is close. Porter has a large checkered floor where you can rent large chess pieces to play chess in the quad. There is also a large area of grass where you can sit out and enjoy the sun on warm days. Cons about porter are that it can get noisy in the quad and the CSO don't do much about it. People who are faced in the quad suffer from that and the hot sunny days where your room gets soaked with a lot of sun and suffocate with the heat. Slow elevators, *Parking* They have two small lots of parking meters and a permit area parking's and the usual ten minute parking spots!

The Jack Baskin School of Engineering or SOE as it is more often referred to is quite different…read morethan the rest of UCSC. Now I'm sure at most universities the engineering department will always be different than say... humanities. But here at santa cruz it is a huge difference. While the rest of the school lounges in their cloud of smoke, and lazy afternoons full of everything but homework, the SOE students are pulling their hair out in key coded labs trying to at the very least be productive. SOE has a wide variety of teaches. Being so close to silicon valley, they pull a lot of interesting individuals who were once professionals, or more likely, still employed by the likes of google and NASA. There are of course the dinosaurs who still shuffle from class to class and tell you how important haskell is. As a lower classmen you will encounter a lot of indifference from the facultly, but almost instantaneously after moving on to upper division classes those very same professors will give you more respect, and treat you like human beings. SOE is comprised of two main buildings, Baskin and E2. It offers degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Bioengineering, Bioinfomatics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Game Design, and Information Systems Management.
