BEST FOOD IN TOWN!! My fiancé and I went to Cabo Sol for date night. We were absolutely blown away by the flavors in the food and drinks. The margaritas are made from scratch (not the gross bottled margs) and the salsa has a rich and complex flavor profile. I ordered the Chorizo Burrito and my fiancé ordered the California Burrito. We also got Fried Ice Cream for desert. We loved every bit of it. The service is great for a small place. Every staff member was attentive to the guests needs, regardless of their duties. This place served us the WORST Mexican food we have ever eaten! I ordered chicken fajitas and the chicken strips were small chicken bits and very thin. The strips appeared to be boiled and not grilled. The chicken had absolutely no flavor to it! Also, instead of large flour wraps fajitas are served with at other restaurants, they were small flour taco shells. My husband ordered the enchiladas and they were terribly salty and he couldn't even finish his meal. I left 3/4 of my food on the plate it was so bad. Service was terrible! Our server never came by to ask if our water could be refilled. We had to ask for napkins and our bill. It wasn't all that busy. After waiting a long time, I finally went up to the counter and told the manager that we needed to leave and still hadn't gotten our bill, just so we could be checked out. I told the manager how disappointed we were in the food. He could have CARED LESS! He didn't apologize or say anything about it.....just wanted our money! Don't believe the rave reviews on here! Must be from family or friends trying to boost the restaurant's rating. Either that, or from customers who are used to sub-par food and think it's good. We are NOT picky and hard to please people! I'm writing this review after my second time trying Cabo Sol. In both instances, they disappointed. The first time I ordered take out, once I got home I found that they gave me a wrong order. I ordered steak and chicken burrito, they only gave me steak. I called to have the ordered fixed, they did not pick up the phone. My second time trying them, I ordered take out again. They gave me the whole order without any utensils or napkins. The burrito was not cut in half, and the tortilla was basically slapped on top of the filling, so without utensils and it not being cut in half and the way they did NOT wrap it, it was not edible while I'm out. To make matters worse, I ordered fish and shrimp burrito, they gave me a shrimp burrito. I will not be trying them again. Additionally, the salsa they provide with the chips is extremely watered down. The reason I gave them two stars instead of one, is that the flavor of the food is semi-good. read more

Hoping for a good Mexican place nearby, we came to the new place, Cabo Sol. Since it opened, there have been lots of cars in the parking lot when we have passed by. I had one question in my mind as we entered, "Is it the same owners as the recently closed Los Cabos (closed a couple weeks before this place opened)?" I will get back to that later. The place has a welcoming feel. Bright colors, clean, interesting chairs, overall, lots of character. We were seating quickly and drink orders were also taken quickly. The menu had some of the same items as Los Cabos had but what Mexican restaurant doesn't have some of the same dishes. My question remained unanswered. It did take a little bit longer than desired to have our orders taken. I went for the Pollo con Chorizo without beans. My husband selected the Pollo Fundido (was his favorite at Los Cabos). The food came out rather fast. I really enjoyed my dish as it had a good amount of spice and the chicken was tender. My husband said he would give his dish a 4 as it was not as crispy as he would have liked (needed to be deep fried longer). The only true complaint I had about the place was how LOUD it was. There were only 6 tables full (less than half the place) and it was noisy! When we paid, which is done at the front, I asked my still unanswered question as to if this is the same owners that Los Cabos had. And the answer is, yes. Same ownership. All I can hope is that they keep their food and service at the current level and not let it taper off like Los Cabos did. read more

I had the chicken chimichanga lunch special. The chicken was tender and juicy. The rice and beans were very bland. My Husband had the fajita lunch special. Said it was full of flavor however I was unable to try it as it's served with pineapple (allergic). He was given 3 small shells with the meal and had enough meat for additional shells. The chips were thick and crunchy. The salsa reminded me of canned salsa with a hint more lime. The food was good but nothing outstanding. They do offer a lunch original margarita special 10 oz for $2.50. The service lacked attentiveness. I requested my sour cream on the side and never received it. Ordered ice tea no lemon and came with it. Once our meals were served we didn't see the waitress until she dropped off the ticket when our meal was half finished. read more

I wish it was better, but here's a tip for you all Mexican lovers - if the plate comes out ridiculous hot, it means the microwaved it - namely the beans. This place is no exception. The beans aren't made by your Abuelita out back.. They're most likely heated up from prior cooking. Now this place isn't bad. Run of the mill Mexican food. I will go here but it definitely isn't my first second or third choice. The chips are all right the salsa is a little sweet for me. The food has always been pretty good the few times I've been here, but last time I was here was in the dead of summer and they don't have air condition! We ordered frozen margaritas and they came out in Mule cups and they were completely melted. So disappointed! This is what drops them to a three star. This restaurant is right down the street from our house and my wife loves Mexican food so we thought it would be nice to order food to go places order picked up for Home and found out half the food was missing called and explained what happened and they said no problem come back up and pick up missing items did not offer anything for the inconvenience! Then get up there to pick up missing items and am told that everything I reported as missing was not missing and they refused to give me the kids meal we were missing! I stopped in for lunch yesterday around 1:30 p.m. I asked for a booth with an outlet to charge my phone. The waitress found one for me ! The waitress took my order which was chicken fajitas. The chips and salsa came out first. The salsa is bland and lacks flavor ! The chips were good ! I was given steak fajitas with rice and beans. The rice was good ! The rice wasn't too greasy and had good flavor. The beans were good too. The steak was way to chewy and most of it wasn't edible. The steak was cooked with the green peppers and onions. I went up to pay and told the cashier/ waitress that I was given steak by mistake. I asked for chicken fajitas. She didn't do anything ! Both the waitress and cashier didn't speak English well! Decided to try this place for lunch before grocery shopping. I would have been better off to eat at the store. Salsa was okay, but the chips were beyond stale. Ordered lunch Quasadilla Fajita with grilled steak. It tasted ok but was a grease laden mess. I'm not a fan of Mexican rice so I can't speak for that. The highlight of the meal was the side of lettuce and tomato topped with sour cream and guacamole. I don't plan to ever come back. I ordered a Green Chili Burrito with tomatoes and sour cream, they brought me a Carnitas Burrito that was Disgusting, I told the Waiter it was wrong, he said "oh well" "next time" I made it very clear there will be NO next time. I am so disappointed as this was a regular spot for us. Don't know what happened but I think they have changed ownership and none of the regular people where any where to be seen. I started out by asking for water brought one glass and there were 9 of us. My husband asked for a sangria and he brought white wine we said no and returned with a red blend no fruit or ice and and than we asked for another one and they brought a rose and said they were out. This was our first trip here to cabo sol. We figured we would give it a shot seams it was lunch and it isn't that far from home. After entering we were greated quickly. We got to our seats and our drink order was taken right away. I decided to try the chirizo queso as it sounded good. My wife chose the happy burritos and ordered them in steak. The chorizo queso was a good dish filled with great taste and a large portion to fill you up. The happy burritos were very nice with some great steak flavor and more then usual portion of steak that the average eater would not be able to finish. They have a strict policy on the chips at the table. One refill and then they charge you. I found this strange but I guess it's keeps people from just ordering drinks and sitting around eating free all day. The service was lacking in the worst way possible. We waited for a long time on refills for drinks. And we waited almost 15 minutes after being done eating just to get our ticket to pay. My family and i stopped for dinner this evening. We immediately ordered chips, salsa and queso. The salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce. The queso was one part queso 10 parts water. My wife ordered a taco salad. Much to our surprise, the salad was covered with the watered down cheese sauce. Between the grease, water and cheese, we were unable to identify the remaining ingredients that made up the salad. I quickly offered my lovely bride a straw in place of the fork she assumed she would be using. If I could give this place one star I would. The prices are outrageous for what you get, the chips are beyond stale and you only get one free refill of them. I visited Cabo Sol for the first time last week. It is a neighborhood, privately-owned local Mexican joint that I don't know why I had not tried yet. In West Des Moines, we don't have very many local owned choices... mostly in big chain land out here. But, like in Downtown Des Moines, I LOVE the local eateries. So, I had never heard anything about Cabo Sol and went in with an open mind. I have to say I really liked it! I had Chicken Fajita Burrito and it had an excellent flavor. The price was good for the portion. The food came out fast. I thought our waiter was a little impatient - but he was okay. The place was clean and every one in my party also really liked their food. I've been to Cabo Sol about 5 times now (we live across the street). A good place to eat the first few times. The third time the food was still good, but the server was very new. The last time I was there, the food was... getting worse & the service was... confused? We ate there for the last time tonight. When we entered it smelled awful - somewhere between burnt hair and cigar smoke. It was so bad, we actually had to remove our clothing when we got home because the stench clung to our clothes; they're currently in the washer... we're hoping they're not ruined. We asked our waitress for (our) usual hot salsa and queso. The dish she brought that was (allegedly) the hot salsa, looked more akin to dirty brown dishwater rather than what we've seen our previous four times. It was very thin, after dipping and removing your chip from it, there was nothing clinging to the chip. I literally had to compare dipping a chip into my glass of water and compare it to the chip I had dipped into the (less than) potent salsa. There was barely a difference between the two. Now I have to say, I've never had to send anything back to the kitchen in my lifetime. But tonight, I actually had to ask, "what is wrong with this salsa..?" as I demonstrated dipping a chip into the salsa as it effortlessly slid off textured chip. She silently removed the dish from our table and came back a few moments later with a slightly thicker salsa. Cautiously I tasted it... It was spicy, but there was an overwhelming flavor of something between vinegar and the sweet relish you'd put on a hotdog. I've never had anything like that before, something went catastrophically wrong here. Our meals were hit and miss. The enchilada was fine.. but the Burrito California was disgusting. The best parts of it were bland, the parts with 'flavor' tasted awful. Keep in mind, I've had this meal from here twice before... I feel like, I should know what it tastes like. Something nefarious occurred with my burrito, or they made... mistakes? The service was quite possibly the worst I've ever seen. Besides anything we asked for (including our basic order) seemingly being the biggest of inconveniences for waitress, she also shot us dirty looks - never smiling or even feinting the slightest amount of hospitality. She brought us the printed out check and placed it on our table before we were done eating. I guess she knew we wouldn't be ordering desert or cocktails after the meal.
