Element Detroit at the Metropolitan

Downtown Detroit

I'm a huge fan of hotels that breathe new life into historic structures, and the Element in Detroit…read moreis a perfect example. This property is housed in the 1925 Metropolitan Building, a stunning Neo-Gothic "Jeweler's Building" that sat vacant for nearly 40 years. Seeing it restored to its former glory rather than being demolished is a win for the city.  The entrance lobby and the grand stairway to the second floor are phenomenal--the restoration team clearly put a lot of heart into preserving the marble and the ornate details. Because the hotel has to conform to the original historic footprint, the rooms are unique and oddly shaped. It was a refreshing change of pace to stay somewhere that broke out of the usual "cookie-cutter" hotel mold. My room featured a long internal hallway, a small kitchenette, and enough windows to provide a fantastic view of the Detroit skyline.  Check-in was seamless, and the staff were excellent throughout my stay. I initially considered subtracting a star because my room lacked a steamer, but the breakfast service won me back. The made-to-order omelets and the yogurt granola station were top-notch, and that high-quality start to the day made up for any minor room omissions. If you appreciate architecture with a history and a bit of character, this is definitely the place to stay in Detroit.

It was clear the hotel was old and lots of wear and tear. Room smelled strongly of floral air freshener and furnishings were disappointing mini fridge looked like it had been beaten with sledge hammer. Air temperature in room was very cold and it was 24° outside. We turned temperature control up told front desk clerk it seemed too cold so she said they would have it checked and fixed while we were out. but the heat still mwas not working and after returning from dinner over 2 hrs later was was still 60 in room. Husband went to front desk twice because there was no phone in room. After second time we changed rooms. The second room was nicer and cleaner but noise from hallway was loud all night.

The power went out (more than once). the heat wasn't working in the height of winter. the hot water wasn't working. The alarm bells went off also more than once. It was always something with them. Once I came in and a pipe had burst in the kitchen area. I just needed a place to stay for a few days at a time and wasn't driving so it was next to the business I was in town to do. I can't tell you if it's worth the price for you but honestly it's just not cute. Once I was staying there and there was a wake for someone who had passed away. I arrived home to a crowd the size of a concert. There were at least a few hundred people. Cars were parked on the sidewalk. there was trash everywhere. there were metal detectors to get inside and it was packed in there. I could hear the police from my room on the sixth floor asking everyone to leave. It looked crazy. One time I stayed on the side that doenst face the street and realized the noise Iheard was the generator the hotel was running on. A generator. In a big city. Also only the 6th floor looks like it's from this century. the other floors are very ugly and old. I would never book a room on any floor other than 6th, and even that is not that great but maybe you get what you pay for I don't know. The final straw for me was a swingers party they hosted i think in December. I saw way more of people's bodies than I wanted to. They should have booked the entire hotel instead of allowing a normal person to be present for that vulgar event. The ladies of the staff (cleaning and reception) were mostly kind. One Cleaning lady who only spoke spanish (I only speak English) worked very hard to communicate with me when I was looking for something I left behind checking out. A young man who I think is cleaning staff was very kind. The tattooed bartender was nice and the parking guy too. Staying so many times and for so long, I encountered a few very unpleasant staff members though. I think the manager with the pauly D hairstyle sizes people up to see who is worth speaking kindly too and who is not. I heard him being VERY RUDE to the nice young man on the cleaning staff mentioned earlier and that was so weird and off putting. he has a dr jekyll and mr hide way about him. All in all this hotel is held together with chewing gum and run by three little boys in a trench coat.

The location is definitely the highlight, it's right next to Tigers Stadium, close to Ford Field, and within walking distance of the NBA arena, plus tons of great restaurants and bars nearby. If you're in town for a game or event, the location is hard to beat. That said, the hotel itself felt small and a bit cramped. The room was on the smaller side, and the bed wasn't particularly comfortable for a hotel at this price point (around ~$350/night). For that cost, I expected wayyy more space and comfort. One downside was the hotel bar,I couldn't even get a seat and didn't realize you needed a reservation, which was frustrating and took away from the experience. It's not a bad hotel by any means, and it has a cool vibe, but overall it feels overpriced for what you get. Decent stay, great location just not sure the value is there.

Rooms are uniquely decorated and the bath products are amazing. The staff, especially Ivory at the reception desk is wonderful. Property is very CLEAN! I would HIGHLY recommend staying here!

Had to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn the first night so in the morning, we thought we'd check our luggage. No need, room was ready! Beautiful room. I would definitely recommend this place.

My Titanium status got me an upgrade to the 23rd floor and I was able to access the Westin Club there, which is what they call their concierge lounge. Free snacks and breakfast was available. My room was at the end of the hallway and supremely quiet except for one loud drunk bunch returning at midnight who were talking loudly and slammed their door. Otherwise all good. The room was comfortable and clean with plenty of space for spreading out my stuff. The bed was also comfortable though the "Westin mattress" is showing some wear. Sullivan's in the lobby is rather expensive. There's also a Starbucks in the lobby. I'll be back in Detroit soon enough. I'll be aiming for this hotel.
