This was such a great and relaxing experience for the both of us -- we'd definitely come back and recommend this place (and Charlie!) to anyone interested in a horseback riding experience! We stayed on-site in the Chateau which was so amazing. The grounds are beautiful and it was fun to use the pool and enjoy the many available spaces over our three days there (and the incredible breakfasts!). Stonepine has an amazing team. Oceanne and Ari helped us navigate every detail and gave so much care into the planning of our day. Nathan and Julie were excellent hosts in the Chateau and went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. The wedding truly could not have been a more beautiful or special day.

But our daughter wanted more than just riding lessons at home--she wanted to be part of a real barn community, make friends, and spend time around horses. Bar SZ Ranch has given her exactly that and so much more. The Borland family is incredibly welcoming and makes everyone feel like part of the family. Michelle is an amazing instructor--kind, patient, encouraging, and knowledgeable. She meets each child where they are and helps them grow in both confidence and horsemanship. At just 8 years old, our daughter attended the week-long Wrangler Camp and says it was the best week of her life. Watching her riding skills improve each week has been wonderful, but what means the most to us is seeing how excited she is to go to the barn and how much she truly feels like she belongs there. If you're looking for a place where kids can learn to ride in a fun, safe, and supportive environment while becoming part of an amazing horse community, I can't recommend Bar SZ Ranch enough. FYI... no showers, and there are portapotties. But the camping on the ranch is limited to a small number, so it was quiet and peaceful. The ranch is only 15 minutes from the West Entrance to the National Park. We did several long hikes and covered many different trails. If you are going to Pinnacles there are showers and restrooms there that you can use. Our kids also got the experience of feeding all the animals and a great horseback riding lesson. Tim and Michelle were wonderful. We would recommend them and the ranch to everyone.

Carmel Beach is recognized as having the 'whitest' sand in the United States, and number 14 globally. This color comes from quartz deposits eroded by the waves. There is a parking lot at the north end of the beach on Ocean Avenue (maybe 30 spots or so), that is usually filled, meaning people are constantly idling in the parking lot, waiting for a spot. The parking lot is elevated from the beach, requiring carefully going down a sand bank. My wife and her mom decided to admire the view by sitting on a retaining wall at the top of the bern, while I happily went down to the shoreline to admire the views. The sand here is more golden than white. The road that runs parallel to the beach and boardwalk in Carmel is Scenic Road and we took it as we headed back to our cottage. There was street unmetered parking spots available and I noticed how much brighter/whiter the sand was in this area (a lot less crowded as well). Thinking back, wish we had stopped so I could have admired this part of the beach a bit more.

Our family thought it was worth it. Pfeiffer Beach was our eighth and longest stop during our southbound journey on the Cabrillo highway through Big Sur. Access is through Sycamore Canyon Road (one lane) which is extremely easy to miss from the highway. It is a one lane road but has many areas where one can turn off to let oncoming cars pass, though I can imagine when it gets busy how much more difficult it would become. We had left Carmel early in the morning, so it was about 07:48 when we reached the bottom. As we drove down, my wife noticed a lone, empty chair about halfway down. Later we realized that that is where a ranger would sit to tell cars to go back up, once the limited parking lot near the beach got full. The car entrance had yet to be manned, so we paid per vehicle fee via cash in an envelope deposited in a fee drop box. The tear off stub is then displayed on your dash. Later when we were leaving, there were employees manning the area, accepting payment, with credit cards being accepted. The parking is administered by a private company so our America the Beautiful National Park pass did not work here. We were the 2nd car in the lot. There are angled handicap spots, motorcycle parking, and bathrooms (outhouse style) in the parking area. There is definitely more beach space than there are parking spots, so if you are able to get to the beach, one can easily find a secluded spot. Though as the no refund sign warned, there is high winds and blowing sand on the beach so not the best place for a warm, sunny beach day. There are streaks of purple sand along the beach (learned that the purple is caused by garnet powder that washes down from surrounding areas). It made the white sand look like it had dirt spots. I did have time to walk to both ends of the beach, and discovered that at the north end, there are pockets of sand further away from the ocean where the garnet sand is a lot more prevalent. The beach is named after the pioneer, Michael Pfeiffer. Many other places in the area (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park) are named after his descendants. The beach is for day use only, and is open from sunrise to sunset. What's interesting about this is how many reviews are on Yelp for this beach, even though there was no cell service when we went. It clearly shows a lot of Yelpers are coming to this beach, and taking the effort to write about it once they get back to an area that has internet. But there are no reviews for any of the vista points in the surrounding areas. Maybe they aren't being approved by Yelp to be searchable?

Cecilia is such an amazing trainer, I've been taking lessons with her for the past couple of months and have had so much fun not only riding the horses but learning more about them. You learn lots about horsemanship and how to ride like you would see at horse shows, but also taking care of horses and how to groom, saddle, etc. Cecilia is patient and kind and works what you're comfortable with as a new or experienced rider. Her husband Jim also helps her out with taking care of the horses on the property and both are amazing! Definitely going to board my horse here the second I get one! read more

A few notes after reading the reviews. 1) Jim is really the peak of bowmen....an archer's archer. I've gone hunting with others that have previously hunted with Jim. They told me that Jim took an Alaskan bear at 105 yards with a single arrow. When I confronted him with this, he said, "naw, it was only 100 yards"...... 2) He's been the paid factory rep - the face of the factory - for at least one bow manufacturer. Not an honor lightly achieved. 3) His whole family shoots at the expert level. Some will be there for training events. 4) Jim as a million stories and will give selflessly in showing you, your friends, your class, your league how to shoot. However, he does not suffer fools lightly and if you come in with the "customer's always right" or some other attitude, he will feel no need to help you any longer. Conversely, he is great with kids and clumsies. If you've ever noodled the idea of trying out a bow (I hate using long bows, but compound bows are great fun without pulling yourself apart), I highly recommend that you go visit and ask to try out a rental bow for an hour. Very inexpensive. If you don't get hooked, there's always chess or scrap-booking...... Jim - it was a privilege to shoot my first real bow there. My daughter is your biggest fan. I'll be back soon.

Jim took an incredibly generous amount of his time to make sure both my partner and I were set up for success, answering every question and making the whole process feel approachable and exciting. It's honestly the first time I've been to a shop that shows this level of care and attention to newcomers, it was an absolutely brilliant experience. Because of Jim, his mate Travis, and everyone else we met there, this is quickly becoming a serious hobby for us. If you've even thought about trying archery, do yourself a favor and stop by, Jim will have you feeling confident and eager to start shooting in no time. Ect... our horse cut the side... we were told they would have to come every day to change the dressing. That will be $250.00 a visit.. We said no ... then we got a bill OMG Said we have changed our Service to another veterinarian... Then she started saying thins that we not true. Then the said I have been caring you Bills for a long time. What that is not true you never cared us , your office manager has debit the billing and set a bill paid . Since then we have used Steinbeck Dr D was the first .he was amazing.. he always explained what he needed to do ... then we met most of the other vets Dr "S" was the main person... if she was not available. Now we see the other vets and mostly the are female, no matter what time of the day or night. Years ago one of our horse hot spooked by the ground keeper drove the tractor fast by his stall .. It's 9:00 and Dr " S " came out . The cut was deep he could not walk to a covered barn to treat him... we had a conex we stored hay .. it was empty, she asked could you get him to go inside of the 5-by12 . I said he trusts me .. the 3 of us and a / new vet that joined their team... flash light were no going to do what she needed. She brought new team member, get their truck and point the head lights into the conex. Dr Sarah De Santi was so amazing in rain cold wind doing the secures one by one the horse . It must have been 11;00 he was back in his stall I think the other one was Dr Kalea . Tried to start the truck but the lights been in on so long it would not turn over. Dr Kayla would come out to tube horses when they colic... Star could tell it was a vet driving in to the stables just by the sound of the engine. Dr Carlton has done a few surgeries on our horses as well . Removing cancer on the back side of horses. What is so amazing is that everyone that is on Team Steinbeck, the front office Nicki who seams to know who is were who is available to come in an emergency... forwards calls to someone in the field, gets script refilled by a Vet and has it ready by the end of day to pickup Then the techs that come out with a vet that knows what they need to assist and usually has what they have it in hand as they request it. They are a very professional team ... I know more stories about how great they have been in the past 20 years. You know your horse is in good hands with th Steinbeck Team

They're mobile when you need them & for more critical matters, the office does a great job of getting your horse in now. A big shout out to Nick Carlson, amazing vet & Maddi, an incredible tech who have treated my current horse for cancerous growths, benign growths, stifle injections, & vaccinations and to Lauren Winfield who has done vaccinations, lameness due to feet issues, resulting in getting me to the right farrier. He's sound because of the teamwork by these 3 talented people.
