The prices seem ok to me not as cheap as I've seen (but then the quality is good) but in line with most other fabric stores I've visited and cheaper than some! I visited yesterday as every January they run a sale with 20% off, which makes the prices much more competitive. The staff at Hansons are knowledgable, friendly and helpful and don't treat you like an idiot (even when you feel like one, for asking 'silly' questions!) I bought my sewing machine from Hansons a couple of years ago and the lady in the sewing machine department was so helpful, showing me the different functions of the machines and really tailoring her suggestions to what she felt my need and experience was. I have since returned on a couple of occasions for fabric and sundries and I'm sure if it was closer to where I live, I'd be there all the time! My only criticism, which isn't even that really, is that they pack so much in there that one often has to tuck in for passing customers as the walkways are very narrow, often shoving rolls of fabric back in whilst they pass!

If you're a beginner like me don't expect tons of help, you're more likely to be waved over to look for yourself and will have to figure out if the fabric you chose will work for the project you have in mind. I was mistaken, my usual fabric shop was shut so rather than a wasted journey, I went in to have a look. Half an hour later I had whittled my selection down to an arm full of jerseys several wools and a few tartans. They have a pretty big selection bearing in mind the size of the shop and the price is amazingly reasonable. Now I have no reason to buy fabric anywhere else. But do bear in mind once the stock is gone, its gone... so buy what you see.

They do all sorts of ribbons, iron-on transfers, buttons, zips, cotton absolutely bloody anything to do with fabrics and sewing. All their fabrics is priced in metres, and they're quite cheap aswell. The only thing i hate about this shop is you cant quite get a buggy around the aisles.

They have a huge range of fabrics on display for you to make just about anything you want! They also sell ribbons by the dozen, velcro, patches, buttons, zips, sequins and cottons (and probably loads more I've forgotten!). The shop is on 2 floors, but staff are so helpful that they will fetch anything for you if you are unable to get upstairs. All materials are sold by the metre so you can buy as much or as little as you want, and prices are very reasonable.

I love this place…read more I went on a search for knitting wool and came here on the Yelp recommendation of Joanna. I had to fit my visit into the shop's limited and somewhat odd operating hours, but fit it into my schedule, I did. And I'm sure glad I did as well. The shop is nothing special from the outside, and it's nothing particularly special from the inside. The walls are cubby holes dedicated to the seemingly haphazard storage of knitting wool/yarn. It's par for the course of any knitting/crocheting store, really. But the jewel of this place is its business owner, retired Mrs M.A. Jones. She self-professedly runs a wool shop to keep herself out of trouble. Love. Her. She is potentially the most helpful person I've met in my life. She's eager to hear about your project and to give you ideas on what yarns will be best for it. She doesn't try to upsell you, and she will recommend an acrylic wool if that's what will suit your project the most. I went in one day and bought a skein of wool. I went in the next day to buy some more, but mostly to show off what I'd done with the first skein, so eager I was for her encouragement and praise. She stocks both high-end and economical wools, so if you're cheap like me you won't have to suppress your balking at the dear wools that come with dear prices. 100 grams of a 70/30 acrylic-alpaca for £2.99 suits me just fine.
