This area is very popping and busy. It is definitely a must-see if you are a newcomer to Ottawa. I stumbled upon ByWard Market when I walked outside of the Rideau Centre mall. It is an indoor market area with different restaurants and shops. Most of the shops are Canadian souvenir type shops. This area is pretty touristy. The shops inside include Indian food, noodles, two boba spots, Mexican food, a chocolate shop, and a few others. This is one of Canada's oldest public markets. It's named after the Englishman John By who founded Ottawa. It's open 9-5PM. I parked at the mall parking lot (ended up costing $19) but they do have a closer parking lot across from ByWard Market. The inside of the market has a hanging art installation that looks like cartoon butchers and food workers. Outside this area there is a farmer's market, cheese shops, sushi stores, shopping, and a diverse variety of other restaurants.

The Byward Market Square hosts a variety of restaurants, coffee shops and stores. You can find something for everyone here. I have most often shopped here when it is raining and I'm in the Market. It is convenient to have this sort of mini-mall or centre here to duck into to escape the rain for a while. It is also useful for getting from one part of the market to another when it is raining. I love the selection of ethnic foods and gifts that are available here. The workers from different parts of the building seem to know each other and everyone is always really friendly. A great place to grab an interesting gift and a bite to eat!

I like how fresh everything looked. I saw berries, heirloom carrots, and much more. I was surprised to read that the market's open 362 days a year. It is an outdoor market that is located in the busy and popular area of by Byward Square. This area is hard to park in and has lots of tourists. I parked at Rideau Centre mall for $19 (I was here for at least 4 hours). I think what is most impressive about this fruit market is their hours. They are open from very early in the morning until the evening. Their hours are: Monday 7am - 6pm Tuesday 8am - 6 pm Wednesday 8am -6pm Thursday 7am - 6pm Friday 7am-7pm Saturday 7am-6pm Sunday 8am- 5:30pm National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month is celebrated in June every year but you should be celebrating monthly!

I mean it makes sense to be the stands in the Byward Market right? Wrong!!! The Byward Fruit Market is actually the little grocery store that is situated beside the International House of Cheese. If you walk in it's a convenience sized grocery store were most of the (it seems to me when shopping here) products come from outside of Canada. I'll drop in quickly when I'm in the middle of cooking and realize I'm out of a certain ingredient but for the most part I wouldn't shop here. This place is open year round and does the most basic of items that you'll probably want for your kitchen. They also have spices and other items throughout the store but it's very small. I hope this clears things up for anyone who actually goes into the store itself. The store is an independent entity from the vendors on the st...actually it might have a street spot in the summer but that's something I have not confirmed with them. Things here seem slightly pricier than the local grocery store. The low review is from the small selection of imported items. Honestly you could go to a grocery store for equivalent produce with a larger selection at a better price. I've been meaning to update my review a lot earlier but kept forgetting to. My apologies.

It's not crowded like some of the bigger markets, and it's located on the property of one of my favourite buildings in the city. I can't think of a better way to spend the afternoon than to visit the museum, pick up some fresh produce, and then have a picnic lunch on the grass. A group of us went on a tour with nutritionist Amy Longard who brought us to different booths so we could find out about the farmers and their products. Each vendor had a lot to tell us about their farming practices and the specific produce they sell. It was so interesting to hear about all the love, care, and effort they put into their work. As mentioned in Spike's review, the products must be local (which means they need to come from a 100 mile radius or 164km), and they must only sell their own products (i.e. they can't sell their friend's jam or honey, it must come from their farm). There were quite a few farmers from Perth, which I thought was interesting. We saw some great products here including fresh produce (kale, carrots, berries, tons of leafy greens, cabbage, potatoes, apples, and more), vegan food (I had a delicious wrap from one of the vegetarian booths who made dips), jams and canned fruits and veggies, beautiful baked breads and sweets, herbs and salts, meats, eggs and more. Hall's Apple Farm was there with baskets of apples, but also a ton of their other products, like apple cider vinegar, apple butter, and more! One of my favourite booths was a gentleman selling sunflower oil, which was delicious. Many of the booths offer samples, which is awesome! If you're looking to support local, you need to check this place out. There's been talk of it having to close down due to a lack of attendance, so come out and show your support for our local farmers!

Many of the same vendors and the same "gotta be local" rule. Although there are fewer vendors than LP, the upside is that it runs on Saturdays and there are almost always free parking spaces nearby. It is not quite as good in the meats and 'meals-ready-to-eat' department and it does not have the wonderful Art-Is-In Bakery stand. Otherwise, you can go a day early to visit Hall's apples, the Jamaican veggie guy, the Niagara soft fruit folks and berry boy at Avonmore farms. Don't forget to buy a bag of Avonmore's homemade tea biscuits a.k.a. the base for a perfect shortcake. Also, I like the funky cookies at B'Goods (I don't think they are at Landsdowne). Their chocolate chile cookie will perk you right up.

I was last at Aberdeen Pavilion four years ago. We were at 613flea on a Saturday. On Sundays, it switches to being the Ottawa Farmers' Market here. It's cool that if you love farmers' markets, you can get your fix the entire weekend here. We walked around, browsing and thinking about what we wanted to get for lunch. We sampled homemade kimchi that was pretty good. Free samples are always terrific. I always find inspiration being a tourist and witnessing products that I have never seen. Vodcow was one of them. It's a lactose-free chocolate cream liqueur. Cool! Che Malambo caught my attention. Whenever I see an empanada, I want it. It's exactly what happened at this stand. I got a beef empanada that had so much filling that it wanted to burst. It was my first time having egg sharing the same filling stage as the beef. The egg was excellent. The filling was seasoned nicely. The outer part of the empanada was yummy. There was live music happening as we browsed. There was also a strawberry social inside Aberdeen Pavilion, but we didn't see much. It was a bit of a disappointment, as it was strawberry season. No demos. No samples. Nothing. Oh, well! We both stopped at the Thai Kitchen Catering Service stand. I ended up getting more finger food. I ordered a pork wonton and a shrimp spring roll. The man at the stand was so nice that he gave me a pork wonton on the house. I also got a Thai iced tea. Drinks were self-serve once you got a cup from him. I made the mistake of pouring sala cider instead. Oops! He was great getting me another cup and I made sure that I got Thai iced tea, which was cold and excellent on a hot day. We sat down and ate. I loved my pork wontons. They were crispy on the outside. The filling was nicely seasoned. I could taste basil, which made them heavenly. There was decent shrimp filling in the spring roll, which had a nice crunch to it. My friend got the chicken pad khee mao. She loved it. She said that it had bean sprouts, which she wasn't fond of. There weren't a lot of them and ate them all. I didn't have a chance to swoop in and eat them for her! It was fun watching a couple across from us with tackle eating a jerk chicken meal. We may have missed that stand, but we were practically doing play-by-play commentary about the jerk chicken going down. People-watching is a fun activity here. The produce and fruit that vendors had this day looked so fresh and vibrant. Although I didn't see much going on at the strawberry social, I will remember smelling ripe strawberries as we passed by various vendors and how happy I was. (259)

Granted, I feel that this review doesn't fully express how great or horrible this market is. It wasn't really open when we were there. There were a handful of vendors there setting up, so I didn't get the full experience. They were preparing for the night market. We were there in the afternoon. We did see a few cool vendor stalls. There was one with healthy plants. It is deadly travelling and not being able to buy all plants that I want. There was a West Indian food stall. The thought that it could potentially sell oxtail and jerk everything made me happy. I'm drooling already! We did manage to see some fresh, local produce. Again, it's a pain not being able to buy green beans and ripe strawberries when I have a tiny little fridge in my hotel room with no kitchenette. Ugh! My friend pointed out that the park next door is always busy. She was right. It was packed on a super hot July afternoon, with kids having a grand time. The parking situation is that you find street parking. I didn't bother checking whether there's a parking lot close by. If you are a local, you have it made by walking over here. Their vegetables are fresh and tasty, and their customer service is excellent. Full disclosure: I hate vegetables. I only eat them because they are healthy and good for me, and part of being an adult is doing things even if you don't like it because they are good or you. I generally don't like the taste of vegetables, but I have to admit that locally grown organic vegetables taste less objectionable to me than regular vegetables at the grocery store. So there are different size baskets you can get (i.e. for 2 people, 4 people, etc.) and different frequencies for delivery (every week, every 2 weeks, etc.). When you sign up you tell them where on your property you will put your cooler and they will put the delivered vegetables in your cooler. If you forget to put out your cooler, they will use their best judgement as to where the safest place would be to put the vegetables and then they call your emergency contact number to tell you where the vegetables were placed. And hopefully you can make it home to collect your vegetables before the raccoons get to them, lol. The day of the week of your delivery will depend on your postal code. They deliver to different parts of the NCR on different days. This day remains constant. When they deliver your basket, they usually ring the doorbell before they leave. So if you are home, you know that they've come. What you get in your basket is a surprise every time. I actually like this because it's like Christmas (except it's vegetables, and I paid for them, so I guess not too much like Christmas, but you know what I mean). I love coming home to my basket of surprise vegetables. I also love getting things that I have no idea what the heck they are, and have to Google them to see how to prepare and eat them. This also forces me to try new vegetables. I had fiddleheads for the first time because they were in our basket. Some examples of vegetables that we sometimes get in our basket: different types of squash (acorn, butternut, pattypan, etc.), carrots, tomatoes, different types of mushrooms (including exotic ones like oyster, lobster, chanterelle, morels, etc.) kale (green, red, Lacinato, etc.), collard greens, Swiss chard (different colours), cucumbers, bell peppers, fiddleheads, snow peas, garlic scapes, beets, turnips, strange greens (like Lamb's Quarters, Sorrel, etc.), bok choy, parsnips, corn, eggplant, potatoes, sweet potatoes, radishes, spinach, different types of lettuces, microgreens, and so much more!! We sometimes get "prepared foods" like vegetarian chili and roasted tomatoes. We've also gotten garlic powder. Since everything is grown in Shawville, QC, you only get what can be grown in this climate. Although they do have greenhouses, so you get greens year-round. Prices are a bit on the high end, but you get quality foods (and local and organic). 2 person baskets are $60, 4 person baskets are $75, 6 person baskets are $100. They also have specialty baskets like all greens basket, all roots basket, etc. And if you really don't like something, you can tell them that you don't want that item in your basket. Customer service is excellent. They are very professional and accountable. Once they made a mistake and forgot to deliver our basket. When we contacted them, they apologized and said they would deliver it the next day and give us some extra vegetables for the inconvenience, which they did. They are quick to respond to correspondences and are very nice. If you are looking for home delivered locally grown organic vegetables and you live in the NCR, I would definitely recommend Bryson Farms!!

I visited the market on the last day of operation for 2017, as I needed yarn for a cowl I am making. The Cheffs had this beautiful red yarn in a 600 meter hank; that's plenty long enough!
