If I was a 12 year old girl from Byron Center, I probably would love this place. It's pretty popular with that demographic. I might even want to have my birthday there, wear my newest outfit from Justice, and request some Iggy Azalea.
However.
I am a couple decades away from that. The Byron Fun Spot rink is one of the smallest in size I have ever skated on, and their lounge/eating areas are very small and awkwardly laid out. Everyone seemed to be using the floor and tables/booths to store their personal belongings instead of the lockers, which made the space less navigable. It was difficult to even find a spot to lace up. The rink floor is terribly warped, gouged, and marred, and it proved to be totally unenjoyable to skate upon.
I visited with the family on one of their Buck-Buck Sundays ($1 admission/$1 rental) and the place was jam-packed, including the parking lot. The crowd, were they at either of the other local GR rinks, would not have seemed quite so large, but it was downright difficult to navigate through all the people on AND off of the skating floor because the place is so small. Skating was a feat of behavioral anticipation and visual-spatial planning; attempting to avoid the toddlers with Skate-Mates going sideways, the roller-bladed hockey players weaving in and out, cutting each other off, the mothers skating backward precariously, trying to get a video of their kid, and the junior high girls moving slowly in a clump so they can gossip.
This brings me to the worst part- and, as a caveat, I am not one of those olfactorily sensitive types- the entire building smelled awful. Kind of like the generic middle-America pool hall smell of cheap carpet, greasy fried food, and decades-old stale cigarette smoke. It was the scent I usually mitigate with copious amounts of booze, but for better or worse, Byron Fun Spot does not serve alcohol! When we left and I escaped outdoors for a breath of fresh air, I found that the smell had permeated my sinuses and clothes. Ugh.
Onto a couple things I did enjoy:
1 star for the very affable and enthusiastic staff, particularly the DJ. Decent music selection and an eclectic mix to suit many tastes.
1 star for the wood beam ceiling, a nice throwback to rinks of old. read more
