I did this hike through the rain and it wasn't too bad but just watch out for slippery rocks. There are a bunch of slick rocks in the end where the cave is so don't be a dummy like me and try to traverse it because it's a little sketch but still super fun. You can easily dial this short hike into a workout and it'll def be harder coming back up. Bring some water and snacks to chill out at the cave, but always Leave No Trace~ Would definitely come back with my Jeep in the future. Kids (and adults) will love scrambling on all the large rocks. Adults with enjoy the beauty of creation. And if you are brave enough, you will find a cathedral-type cave at the end of your journey. You do have to squeeze to find it, but the trip back into the cave is worth it--just be careful of any low hanging bats (lol!). My wife and I have lived in NWA for 5+ years and we do this hike at least once a year. Sometimes just us, but usually with a group and no one has ever complained about the distance or that they were bored. So good! I love this hike and I know you will too!!

Lost Valley Trail - Buffalo National River, Arkansas…read more Lost Valley Trail was a great hike and one of the highlights of our time exploring the Buffalo National River area. The trail takes you through a beautiful, heavily wooded Ozark landscape with towering trees, rocky creek beds, huge rock formations, and some really impressive bluffs along the way. We made our way to Eden Falls and also checked out the cave, which made the hike even more fun and adventurous. The scenery around the rock formations and cave was probably my favorite part of the trail. The only disappointment was that the area hadn't received much rain recently, so Eden Falls was completely dried up during our visit. Even without the waterfall flowing, though, the hike itself was definitely worth doing. The forest, cliffs, creek beds, and cave still provided plenty to see and made for a beautiful outdoor experience. Great hike with lots of variety and beautiful Ozark scenery. I would definitely recommend visiting--just try to go after some rainfall if you want to see Eden Falls flowing!

Bald eagles are easy to spot in the area and the state park offers a marina tour that takes guests out in season to not only take a tour around the lake and learn about the history and the beauty of the area, but also observe the wildlife and the birds naturally live in this area. The cave system here has numerous places for exploration. The hiking trails are well-maintained and offer wonderful exploration opportunities, including to waterfalls, water features plus high vantage points with a great view looking out over the scenery below. All of this is offered to the Ozark Mountains and free of charge, as the state parks offer visits for free sponsored by the state of Arkansas. This is a favorite place of ours to go, and we come at least once a year - usually in the spring and often times we will come a second or third time during the year in the fall too. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, this is not a place to be missed.

Some pointers before hiking the trail: - It is referred to as an easy trail, though I would consider it more moderate in difficulty. There are a lot of rocks on the trail and uneven footing. You will be doing a lot of uphill and downhill walking so make sure to get some good hiking shoes/boots. - Try to drive an SUV or 4 wheel drive car because the journey to the parking area is largely a dirt road with rocks and gravel. There are a lot of twists and turns and it is a fairly steep drive up the mountain. Take County Rd 5, it's easier on the car, I promise. - Come earlier in the morning in order to get beautiful pictures and less groups of people. Makes for a much more enjoyable experience in nature. Overall, this is a must-hike trail if you're in Arkansas. The view of the peak is incredible and stunning. The journey there isn't too difficult as long as you are prepared. Highly recommend!

We have ridden for up to 8 hours and traveled over 30 miles encountering horseback riders, other atv riders, mountainbike riders, hikers and campers in the woods. The scenery is beautiful along Lee Creek and you have many opportunities to cross the creek on the trails. Some of the terrain is rough and rocky and beware of the mud puddles...if you cannot see the bottom, do not try to go through. We sunk a couple to the seat! Not only great for atv but hiking and taking in the swimming holes is a must. The scenery is great. Check out my personal pics To reach Devil's Den State Park, travel eight miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 to Exit #53 (West Fork), then go approx 17 miles southwest on Ark. 170. So compared to some of the National Parks and NP hikes I've been on, this place is just so-so, but…read moreit's really not fair to compare Devil's Den and the Butterfield Hiking Trail to them, it has to be considered separately, for what it is -- a State Park. And for that I give it 4 stars. I went on July 4, 2012, the Ranger Station and Visitor Center was open which was good. The Rangers were very helpful and meticulous in getting all my info for my planned hike on the Butterfield Hiking Trail -- a 15-mile loop. They got my car description, license plate #, start time, estimated end time, and "cut off time" -- i.e. the time after which, if I had still not returned, they would send a ranger out looking for me -- which was nice, pretty professional, and reassuring to me. I was doing it as a day hike which while a bit challenging, is doable for someone in decent shape who is an experienced hiker and comes well supplied. I had hiking boots, a headlamp, 8 liters of water, a water filter, and some food in my hiking backpack. I also used bug spray. The bug spray was a must. The hike itself was ok, unlike most hikes that go up the first half then down the second half (or the opposite for a place like the Grand Canyon), this hike went up and down constantly over rolling hills -- so even though the absolute elevation gain at any one point was only about 500 feet, the total elevation gain if you account for all the mini-ascents was probably much higher than that. Typical rugged wilderness scenery, woods, woods, and more woods -- it was pretty dry so there were few water sources, but there were some if I needed more water. Ultimately I only drank about 5 of the 8 liters I brought. My one gripe is that I lost the trail on 3 separate occasions, which is very easy to do if you don't pay very careful attention to the blue diamond markers on the trees designating the trail. Those detours probably tacked on another 2 miles or so onto my total distance. Between miles 2 and 3 in particular I went way of course and ended up out at the highway at Bridge's General Store, and to find the trail again I had to go back about a mile on the highway, so that was kinda bad. But I guess as long as one pays very close attention to the blue tree markers you should be ok. Also even though I am a pretty experienced hiker my right knee did start hurting pretty bad after mile 12 or so, I think it was a combination of the long distance and the relatively heavy pack I had on (8 liters of water weighs a lot), and for the last two milesor so I basically limped with a ramrod straight right leg. I started at 8:30am and finished right around 5:30pm which is 9 hours, but I think if one doesn't get lost at all like I did and has no leg/msk problems like I did this hike is doable in about 6 hours. Overall this is a good day excursion and hike if you're in the local area, recommended.

The Butterfield hiking trail is a challenge not to be taken lightly. A reviewer has posted several…read morephotos so take a good look, and imagine your legs going over those rocks. I recently completed this trail over the weekend so experienced it first hand. Don't skip checking in at the visitor/ranger center in the park before heading out. They get a lot of information from you and that is for good reason as there is very little, if any, cell phone reception on the trail. Also bring some hiking companions not just to enjoy the scenery, but also for safety. Because of the trees, terrain, and lack of cell coverage it would take considerable time to locate and extract you if something happened. For camping in the back country, there are basically two sites. Rock Hole Camp and Junction Camp. Take note of the "Rock" in Rock Hole Camp because unless you are sleeping in a hammock, you will have a hard time finding a spot free of rocks to put a tent. Junction Camp is more cleared to put up a tent. The park the trail connects to is called Devils Den, so a fitting name for the section of trail between Rock Hole and Junction Camp could be the Devil's Rock Garden. Lots and lots of rocks so I would recommend mid-height hiking boots at a minimum to protect your toes and reduce the chance of rolling your ankles. A sprained ankle would certainly spoil your day. Please make sure you have water, and a way to purify water should you run out. There are a couple little "waterfalls" on the trail that really only have water coming down if it rained recently. It may be a good thing if there isn't water everywhere as the rocks are smooth faced so very slippery when wet.
