Great newborn class with Rina to connect with other new moms and also get a lot of support during this new stage of life.

Chinese with Ms. Olivia

My daughter attended a year of once a week pre-K at Thousand Oaks Chinese School with Olivia. It…read morewas the best Mandarin class for young kids (5 or younger) that I had experienced, and I have seen quite a few in my journey with 2 kids. Note that her Mommy and me class is likely quite different in setup from the pre-K class I experienced, so please do keep that in mind. Olivia set developmentally appropriate expectations such as very short "sitting down" sessions, and lots of hands-on activities with craft and music. She set basic ground rules, like taking turns to speak, but at the same time could gently but firmly re-direct rule breaking and knew when to ask TA or parent help with kids that needed individual attention without jeopardizing the lesson with the rest of the kids (the pre-K class was 15-20 kids). She used the pictorial nature of the Mandarin radicals/characters and introduced the class to over 100 in ~30 weeks. My daughter retains over 50 characters a year later but alot of it depends on consistent usage after they are taught. Note the class did not have quizzes or testing, hence review was entirely dependent on parent motivation. We probably reviewed class material 2 times a week (5-15 mins). Olivia knew how to hold the children's attention and had excellent rapport with the kids. The ability to make storytime interesting in another language is critical as it is easy for kids to tune out when it is a language they do not know. The class consisted of a mix of students with differing levels of Mandarin exposure (from zero to 100%), and Olivia was able to balance that and reach the students who were tuning out. She provided some English instruction especially when dealing with a child with less Mandarin understanding. A year later my daughter still runs up to her to say hello when they meet in passing. I especially appreciated that Olivia included activities that required all students to speak. They worked on introducing themselves, and talking about their favorite food and their family. This might be less of an issue in a small group toddler setting but is a common problem in the typical Chinese schools with class sizes greater than 15. My kids have a strong preference for their primary English language and without encouragement to speak they might go through the whole class without speaking a word of Mandarin. My husband who does not speak Mandarin found sitting in the class with our daughter to be fun and they would review the characters or phrases learned in class together. I wished her Mommy and me class was available when my kids were younger, as I would have been the 1st to signup! The earlier you start in the 2nd language journey the more easily they absorb which sets the base for success in the later years. I have added some photos of materials used because that's all I have now, but it's only a small subset of interactive activities she provided.

My kid loves this place! Coach Sue and Coach Jason are great. Very welcoming and definitely great…read moreteachers. The other fencers are also really nice and friendly with each other even when they are bouting one another. It seems like a nice "family" to be a part of. I don't know about all of the rules and specifics about the sport but as a parent, it feels good to bring my child here. And my fencer says that he can tell he has improved greatly in the short time he's been there. So we're both happy!

After a very successful first year in the sport with Conejo Valley Fencing Club, we brought our…read moreson to Ace Fencing to work on improving his fundamentals with an eye towards participating in competitions in the future. From the start, both coaches seemed to have a slightly negative bias against fencers who were not classically taught through their salon, and asked that we enroll our high-school-age student in a beginning class, with several students under the age of ten. We did so, but ultimately, even with their recommended private lessons, didn't see much in the way of progress, and got no feedback from the staff. So we offered to add more private lessons as well, in replacement of the beginning class, and were rejected. From our perspective, the adult attendees at this salon are fantastic--warm, open, and more than willing to welcome new members to their group. They genuinely love the sport and want to see everyone succeed. However, this cannot be said of their coaching staff. Ultimately, if you want to follow their regimen, the staff here is probably OK, but if you don't fit their format, there's not much engagement, and they don't seem to have a problem pitting high-schoolers against elementary students if it suits them to do so. If your elementary-age student is OK facing off against high school students, this place could work. Otherwise, we would recommend you find another place, if possible, especially if your student is older and just starting out, or catching up to others.

Both classes were led by Barbara and Corgi, who were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and relatable. From the moment we walked in, they made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. What I appreciated most was how interactive the classes were. They encouraged lots of questions and really engaged with the group, which made the experience feel personal rather than overwhelming. They struck the perfect balance of being informative while keeping things fun and lighthearted. So much information can be stressful but the way it was presented was easy to digest. I loved doing it with my partner and think it was such a great way to get him more involved in this process that can lean so heavily on the mom. Beyond just the classes, The Pump Station offers so much! Mommy and Me, classes for Grandparents, Car Seat Installation, Stroller consultation. They also have a great gift store and registry program! I will absolutely be signing up for Mommy & Me classes and love supporting a small business who put so much love and care into what they do.

Really disappointed in my experience today. I drove two hours to this location to support a local…read morebusiness. For one, I was not greeted or asked if I needed help when entering the store. More importantly, their website said the stroller I wanted was in stock and available in 4 hours for pickup, but when I got there it wasn't available for purchase and it had to be ordered. When I brought it up to the cashier, he said it was because they have it in store their inventory but not at the store? Huh?? After doing more digging I saw there was a "Terms and conditions" asterisk in fine print you have to click on to find out this information. All I saw was the green check mark that says "In stock and ready for pick up in 4 hours." Any other place I have ever been to- this would mean it would be in stock at the store. When I brought up, calmly, that this was confusing and they should fix it because I drove two hours to get to the store. The cashier said nothing. Not a "Aw geez, I'm sorry. I can understand your frustration and why that's confusing." I'm a reasonable person. I've worked in customer service all my life. The demeanor of the cashier alone has put me off from ever visiting this store again or recommending it. We went to Uppababy a few blocks down and they were SOOO kind that it completely made my day. All I needed was some kindness. To the owners of the Pump Station- the people using your website are most likely VERY tired moms. I personally am getting 3-4 hours of sleep a day. Tired moms need clear signage if something is in stock or not. Time is precious in this season of life. We also need KINDNESS. My body is broken and recovering from giving birth. I am exhausted! I would expect a place who sells baby items to understand this. Overall, would never recommend this place and will tell everyone I know that it was an awful experience.
