If I live in the neighborhood, then I would likely be shopping here weekly. Unfortunately, I live too far away. However, I still come here every once in a while specifically for the food counter. This review is for their Friday special, Fish & Chips. I have suggested to the servers that they should sell it everyday, and I plan to continue advising them. It's a top seller and everyone can't seem to get enough. They regularly sell out by early evening. This past Friday, I stopped by again for this wonderful delicacy that sells by the pound. The large piece of cod I got was only a little over $8. Crispy and crunchy, though slightly oily, this tender piece of fried fish hit the spot. Don't forget to ask for the tartar sauce and malt vinegar. Protip: Tell the servers that you will wait for a fresh batch and they will honor that request. They constantly sell out and make a new batch every 15-30 minutes during peak hours. read more

Nice butcher shop and grocery store. They have a wonderful selection of Irish and UK imports. The butcher area has Irish bangers, rashers, as well as your traditional offerings of beef, pork, and chicken. The butcher gave us cooking instructions for our purchases and was incredibly helpful. Review is for the food counter section. Got a scotch egg and an Irish breakfast sandwich. Scotch egg was GIANT. The layer of sausage was extremely generous and basically doubled the size of the egg or more. The Irish breakfast sandwich was delicious. Definitely very hearty. Has 2 sausage, 2 egg, 2 black pudding. Absolutely worth it would return. My salt and cholesterol levels that day were probably off the charts, but it was a fun experience. May also pick up some other British snacks next time. Can't speak for the lineup. Where I did walk, it seemed like a fairly normal grocery store in offerings. Maybe a smattering of additional items. Butcher Block is such a great neighborhood grocery store. I love trying new products and brands that you can't get anywhere else. I'll regularly get their sausage rolls from the deli as well as their Shepards pie and chicken pot pie. It would be great if they had more breakfast sandwich options though - maybe a BEC? Their chips selection is incredible. I've become a major fan of the Keogh's sweet chili chips. Some varieties they carry in the small one serving bags and other they have larger bags. It's fun trying new flavors like worcestershire and marmite - both were actually tasty. And there are so many sweets - you could try a new one each day! I also have tried Lucozade - the Irish version of Gatorade. It's tasty! They have a sport and energy version. I like them both but the energy is my favorite because it has a nice effervescence to it. I'd like to try more of their meal options from their deli since they have a large sandwich menu. Either way, I always leave with something when I stop in. Solid solid solid British food. We trek here to get supplies to make our full English breakfast and they truly have the best quality items out there. They have all the classic British brands, snacks, candies, drinks etc and their fresh food is absolutely fantastic. The staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Especially the gentlemen behind the breakfast counter, they seem like they love being there and serve you with a smile and answer any questions you might have. Today we opted to get the Irish breakfast sandwich instead of bringing food home to cook, it was BRILLIANT. I've been a regular customer of Butcher Block for almost 20 years, and the last 4 of them have been very disappointing and find my visits here becoming fewer and fewer, but today will have certainly been my last until major upgrades are made, between the lack of flavor in the recipes of the hot food and the fact that the counter guys just make up their own prices as they go is insane. ALWAYS double check the BEST BEFORE date on any purchase you make in this store because sadly they are now FAMOUS for selling multiple long past their SELL BY DATE products. Today I bought a bar of Cadbury's chocolate that had a weird chalky flavor. I looked at the Best Before date and it had expired fully ONE YEAR and one month before purchase and yet they were STILL offering it to unsuspecting customers. Gross. Unfortunately, Butcher Block has lost two customers for good. On multiple occasions, my partner and I have noticed price inconsistencies when we've been run up at the cash register. Goods costing more than labeled. Goods mis-priced on shelves. My last straw was being given a different tag for a meat that was more money per pound than what I originally ordered. I'm glad I caught it when I was checking out. Honest mistakes happen, but not at a place that consistently tries to come up a few dollars on every sale. I always use to the the corn beef for lunch or chicken cutlet or any hot food that caught my eye. The portions they give are good. It's hard for me to give a bad review to a store that sells Spezi, regardless of how pricey it is. For people who don't know, Spezi is a mix of orange soda and coke and I got quite acquainted with it back when I went to Germany. Sure their drinks are pricier but then again it's no longer in Euros so it isn't super overpriced. I don't know of many other places that sell this in the city so I was quite happy to find this among other European sodas/snacks. The best way I can describe Butcher Block is part butcher, part grocery store, and part lunch spot. Well known for their daily food specials and big time meaty cuts, this local joint is among the most popular in the hood. Lastly, for Irish cuisine loving folks who don't feel like getting their food in a restaurant, this is the place to do it. To be honest, if I'm going to Butcher Block, I'm less likely to shop for groceries / pantry items and most likely going for sausage links or a serious lunch. As of late, it's been mostly the latter, and I've had at least option from their daily special enough to call myself a regular. The platters are no joke. For $8-9 (often times without tax!), they stuff an entree of your choice with a side of mash, rice, or veggies. And by stuff, they really do stack the food till they have problems shutting the lid. I am sure the platter usually weighs between 2-3 Ibs when its over. No joke. Hot turkey carvings, beef stew, and their corned beef have been my winners as of late. The mac and cheese, curry chicken, and shepherd's pie have been good on occasion, but the chicken parm, fish and chips, and pork masala have been misses almost every time. From the cold foods section, shoot for the mac salad, potato salad, and scotch eggs - all of which are very solid. Beware of coming here 8pm and after - the food has been sitting out awhile and is usually tossed immediately after. Do take advantage of the delivery if you happen to live nearby, it's free and there is no minimum. Shoot for between 11-3pm for in person pick up. read more

No doubt the only place to get a fresh roast beef sandwich in Sunnyside Queens!! When the meat is rare, I am in heaven, some salt, pepper, coleman mustard, and a little mayo on a hero!! Yummy!!! Their meatloaf has gotten better, before it was just overwhelming with onions!! Now, the last time there were not that many onions and they were cut down to tiny bits otherwise its terrible, unless you are an onion lover. I like their meatloaf sandwich. They gut the top of the roll like a wheel and fill it with gravy and then add a large slice of meatloaf then close the sandwich with the bottom of the roll and wrap it up in foil which allows the flavors to blend, now can you visualize the delicious mess when you bite into this meatloaf sandwich. On Friday's I am a big fan of their crispy crunchy cod fish with chips. I really enjoy their Friday soup of the day which is a seafood chowder which is so lightly creamy, but still made with cream filled with chunks of fish and some veggie goodies, I am not sure what some of the veggies are because once in a while you can scoop up a spoonful of soup and it can be ridiculously spicy but I think it works perfectly together to me its a delicious mix. read more

What a fun store to visit! You can feel like you're in another world with their range of UK and Irish goods. From a full Irish breakfast, whiskey based chocolates, teas, beans and my favorites crisps and chocolates. I really wanted to find the Cadbury advent calendar but only saw the galaxy one. Wonder if they have the Cadbury or it's all sold out..? I'll definitely have to come back again to try their prepared foods. I really like this grocery -- good selection, products not easily found elsewhere, and really good prepared comfort food from their kitchen. I've gone here for years, but after the last couple of visits I'm done with them. A strange thing has happened the past few weeks -- they seem to have decided to stop marking prices. Found this lovely little shop when I was in NY and spent a small fortune, not that the prices are terrible, but being a displaced Brit there were so money choices of things I hadn't had in ages. Prior to returning home there were some meat products that I had to bring home, the breakfast pack and black pudding of course. I spoke with Noel, who happily agreed to freeze anything I wanted to bring back to Florida for me. Needless to say, all meet products made it home safely. Fast forward to today when I finally decided to cook them. They are absolutely AMAZING! Some of the best sausages and black pudding I've had in years. This was first time to order delivery from butcher block, and always weary about ordering food for delivery from anywhere as you never know for sure how it will arrive.. I ordered shepherds pie with gravy and vegetables.I have to say I was disappointed,I have gotten before in shop and was good. It arrived without the gravy but later sent on. The extra vegetables I am not sure if it was added?? It seemed like one huge piece of shepherds pie. Some of the minced meat was burnt from obviously the bottom of the pan. Note to owner, don't scrape the bottom of pan if burnt. So not really too happy to have gotten this order today. But I Know in general food is good and service in shop good too. read more
