Guns ocean and…read morethorns The Sagamore Hill Historic Site is the remains of an old battery of two 155 mm artillery pieces that were placed here in WW 2 to protect the Cape Cod Canal and surrounding area against German subs. Like most coastal defense forts, the guns were never fired in anger and were removed after the war. The fort was decommissioned and turned into a park. The site has wide and open trails in the beginning and getting to the site where the old guns were is pretty easy. You can see a few remains of the artillery battery but the main attraction is the great views of the ocean and hills around Sagamore. The site is a nice place for some hiking, easy off road bike riding or snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter. However if you try and complete the whole loop be advised that the trail narrows considerably after you reach the artillery site and in the summer gets over grown with impressive thorns, very healthy poison ivy and hordes of ticks. A pleasant and seldom used place that offers a bit of history, great views of the ocean or some exercise. But like many trails in this area it's probably best left till the cold weather.

Trash canals and…read moretourists Bridges are cool, big bridges are really cool and big bridges that carry trains across canals are really, really, really cool. The Cape Cod Railroad Bridge is a lift bridge with a 544 foot main span. That makes it the second longest lift span bridge in the whole country. The bridge was started in 1933 and finished in 1935 and replaced a crappy old draw bridge built in 1910 that was holding up traffic on the canal. The huge bridge has a clearance of 135 feet, exactly the same height as the other two bridges that go across the canal. Obviously some thought were given to the design of all three bridges. For years the bridge only carried trash off the Cape onto the mainland. Nothing else. But fortunately some enterprising minds saw what a waste that was so a few years ago several touristy people trains started running over the bridge over to Hyannis. A very cool trip indeed. The bridge is lovely, especially when that huge lift is going up to let some huge ship pass. There are bike paths on both sides of the canal and seeing the bridge up close is a real treat. The bridge was just fixed up in 2002 so I suspect this great old bridge will keep on doing what it has been doing since 1935. But now instead of just garbage the cool bridge is carry people too.

As far as the Bourne bridge is concerned it's the bridge you want to go over if your going to the Falmouth area rather than taking the Sagamore bridge to head to Hyannis and Yarmouth and even down to Provincetown. Now in my opinion it looks identical to the Sagamore bridge and was built in the 1930s like the Sagamore which might be the reason. Either way people enjoy your bridges!!

I love this place and I am here quiet frequently. The only thing I dislike at this library is that they are pretty loose on the noise policy. Today they were vacuuming while people were trying to read. Also a group of young girls were running and yelling on the quiet workplace floor.

There's a lot of interesting and good information, and I liked the people. But.... The first half of the tour is in an old mini bus. The bus has tiny windows, like 4" square, and no air circulation. No fans. No air conditioning. Today was nearly 90 out by 10 am, when our tour started, and temperatures inside the bus got so hot that stepping out felt cool! You don't travel far, and then they stop for 10 minutes to talk about what's out the window. It's brutal. Ironically, the travel distances are so slim most people could walk it. But, just sitting on the bus in the heat? Yuck. The second half is in an old shed where you learn about harvesting. Again, it could be interesting, but it's a good 10° hotter, even with the fans going, and it makes it hard to focus. Or even listen. Better weather would have helped. But, we had an old lady in our tour group nearly pass out, and the guide indicated that that was not uncommon. Heck, complimentary water would be nice. Waters are a dollar. The tour is fifteen. It's all cash only.

Two roadway bridges and one railroad bridge cross the canal, ensuring that people headed out to Falmouth and Provincetown can get there easily (or you can take a ferry/MBTA boat from Boston). The first attempts to build the canal did not take place until the late 19th century but they did not begin excavation until 1880 but that effort failed. The final start was underway in 1909 and completed in 1916, with a final push by the US Army Corps of Engineers widening it to 480 feet in 1940. The canal has service roads on both sides with access for fishing. It's completely level and ideal for skating, biking or just having a really nice walk along the canal. If you are into fishing and boating this is a great area. Also a lot of history here. Most of the area along the canal has free parking, picnic tables and is a place where people can come to spend the day and get exercise

Some of the dog owners think a large leash is fine and that either not pick up their animals waste or they put it in a bag and leave it.at times the fisherman take over .The language can get heated and full of swears. They are not good at cleaning up leaving line,hooks,coffee cups etc along the rocks. There is always a breeze, remember if it's at your back when you start your return will have it in your faces from May to Oct bathrooms are open. The pavement is kept up the grass is cut . The views are amazing there is always a chance you might see a seal,sunfish,birds , several different boats and occasionally a whale or dolphins. There are different events that go on at railroad bridge and range station.No swimming,tubing is allowed.picnics are nice and there are tables at several of the parking areas.
