I ordered a bowl with tortillas on side as well as chips and queso... as described said double chickens and double rice ... so I knew it would be enough food for 2 people. When I got home that bowl was barely 1/4 full and left us hungry and wanting more ... but after spending $20 and still being hungry will not likely return. It's a shame because what was there tasted decent ... I will say staff was VERY welcoming and friendly upon entry -- so service was top notch but when things are described as double you'd think it would indeed be double. I got a burrito to go, and it was delicious. The burrito was a good size and the chips and salsa were fresh and tasty as well. Service was fantastic, the person on the phone who took my order was extremely friendly and helpful. I did not eat in, but I will say that the restaurant looked clean and there were several people at tables eating. It was an absolutely tasty meal, if I could give it 4 1/2 stars I would, and I will probably try it again. This is my first time trying Burrito Shak at the new monkey junction location. It's located in the Harris Teeter plaza next to Edward Jones. Placing your order is like Moe's Southwest grill and Chipotle. The staff prepare your order right on the spot in front of you. They have pre-selected menu items but you can request to customize your order. They offer burritos, bowls, nachos, tacos, quesadillas, salad, chips with either salsa, guacamole, or queso, and a kid friendly menu. The burritos, bowls, tacos, and quesadillas all come with chips and salsa. Salsa offerings are either mild poblano, medium Chipotle, medium verde, or hot habanero. Protein offerings are either house-spiced chicken, roasted pulled pork, seasoned ground beef, tofu, carne asada for additional $0.50 or a battered Atlantic cod for an additional $0.50. I was disappointed the tofu is not marinated or seasoned/baked. It's just plain tofu. Tofu tastes way better when is marinated or cooked with seasonings. So I chose the seasoned ground beef instead for the S-Turn burrito ($7.99). The S-Turn burrito comes with plain rice, beans (choice of pinto or black beans), roasted poblano crema, roasted peppers and onions, queso, and lettuce. The burrito was about 6in long, 3in wide, 2in deep. It was very filling. The burrito was good, but not out of this world. The seasoned ground beef was a taco seasoning base and the flavor was overpowering over the other ingredients in the burrito. I wished I could have tasted more of the poblano crema and I wished it had more roasted peppers and onions. I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of their other offerings and other protein choices. I tried the fried cod on my burrito bowl this time around and wouldnt recommended the cod. It was 2 tiny flat pieces that were over cooked, dried out and mainly breading. Maybe I got the bottom of the bag but it wasn't good. You get so much meat with the other meat options and with the cod they really skimped out. Decided to try this place out and upon walking in noticed similarities to Island's & chipotle. The staff were very helpful and offered to answer any questions and the place was very clean. I got nachos and my friend got a burrito bowl, both tasted fresh and were filling. Compared to islands their meat & toppings looked a lot fresher so I might would choose Burrito Shak over Islands just for that reason. Although Islands prices are a tad lower. They have a salsa bar with four different salsas and offer quite a few different sauces you can ask for. I also got a side of guacamole which tasted nice and fresh. Terrible. 3 times I tried. Terrible. I literally throw the food in the trash. Last order was for a Rincon bowl with cod fish fried. I ended up with a burrito and the so called fish was about 4 tiny pieces so far overcooked they looked like salad croutons. Hard, dried out chunks that literally crumbled to dust when poked with a fork. The rest of the rice, beans etc was ICE cold. I would have taken photos but I already heaved it in the trash. There are several things that Burrito Shak can improve from a sanitation, food, and operational perspective. Sanitation: 1) Two guys working the food line have long hair and facial hair. Their long hair was tied back but this is food service. Hair nets should be worn on top of their long hair and facial hair. 2) As a vegetarian, I noticed that they scoop the meat and bring it over the beans compartments. Even though the beans come before the meat down the line, the issue is the employees reach for the meat scoopers while the burrito tortilla/bowl is still sitting back towards the rice. This risks the beans getting contaminated with bits of meat which is unacceptable to vegetarians who may bite into pieces of meat when they eat their entrees. Food: 1) The pineapple jalapeno salsa on the salsa bar tastes like a fruit cup was just mushed/blended up. It's like pineapple apple sauce. I think it should be less processed. Keep small bits of pineapple in it and add more spice. 2) The rice I had today was undercooked/hard. I don't think this is a consistent problem but something I wanted to bring up so staff can keep quality more top of mind. 3) It would be a lot easier and faster to eat the loaded baked potato if the employee could peel it and dice it up before serving it. Leaving the skin on is really inconvenient and messy with all the other toppings in the bowl. I think it tastes good but I don't have the patience to eat it. Operational: 1) Monday is loaded baked potato day. I believe Thursday is taco salad served in a taco shell bowl day. Wednesday is their waffle fry nachos day. The problem with these different daily food offerings is that different family members have their preferred entrée. Therefore, one family member always has to settle for something they don't want as much in order for another family member to get the special item. Not sure if Burrito Shak is just testing these different options or just cannot accommodate serving all of these items on a single day. I think they should either simplify the menu or find a way operationally to serve all entrée options every day. 2) The circular burrito bowl container used for takeout orders should be used for dine-in orders too. Those flimsy paper cartons don't cut it and just don't look good from a presentation standpoint. I think it hurts Burrito Shak's brand because it looks like something you'd get from a cheap food stand on the street. Please use sturdy circular bowls instead. 3) I don't get why it costs different amounts to add tofu to a salad ($2.74) versus burrito bowl ($0.75). It's the same amount of tofu either way so it should be the same price regardless of the entrée. 4) I know the Burrito Shak chain is relatively new but they need to introduce a loyalty rewards program. It might sound like I dislike Burrito Shak based on all this but that's not the case. I do like Burrito Shak but I want to love it. My comments are for Burrito Shak to improve. I'll be rooting for it to perform well against competitors in the area. read more

Service is always fast and friendly. I always get a steak quesadilla with fresh jalapeños and sour cream on the side. It's always cheesy and cooked perfectly. I like the salsa bar and that they have all levels of heat. The line always moves pretty quick. read more

For a first day, every employee seemed to be working together to make the process so smooth. We went with nachos with chicken and The Paradise tacos. The nachos were delicious! The chicken had a really great flavor and everything was fresh. We definitely plan to go back for more nachos! The Paradise Tacos were good as well, but we only had a piece or two of pineapple on each so we would have definitely liked more of the pineapple salsa which drew us to those tacos in the first place. I always tried to grab some shak from the hampstead location anytime I was in the area. So glad one opened up in Wilmington. All the proteins are great, chicken is my favorite. The slaw is amazing. The fire shot salsa actually has a great kick which is hard to find. They don't charge extra for guac. The chipotle ranch is great. Creamy avocado is tasty. The suggestions on the board as all tasty but I always wind up making my own. The bowls are great bang for the buck and you'll walk out paying like 9 bucks for a massive meal.
