Not really a fan. Burger Project is located in the newish "St Collins Lane," which has replaced the old Australia on Collins shopping mall on Collins Street. St Collins Lane seems to be struggling to get its feet off the ground. It still appears to be half under construction, with only a few clothing stores, a cafe, and this burger place open. I can tell that St Collins Lane is expected to be a pretty high-end place once it finally gets some retail tenants, so this fast-food burger joint seems a bit incongruous with its surroundings. And it makes for a weird, somewhat depressing vibe, eating in a half-vacant supposed-to-be-high-end shopping mall. Nevertheless, Burger Project is popular, with massive lines at lunchtime. Luckily, the queue moves fast (they give you a buzzer thingie so you can go collect your food when it's ready), so it's a good place for a quick lunch. Unfortunately, the food wasn't that great and I'm not just saying that because I'm vegan -- nobody at the table seemed really wowed with their food. Just average burgers, not really worth the hype (or the queue, even if it was fast-moving). As a vegan, I had to get my burger in a lettuce wrap ("burger in a bowl") because the bun is not vegan. (Strike one. Like, really, why do places try to be fancy-pants by putting egg wash on their buns to make them "pretty"? Really unnecessary.) I also had to ask for no mushroom crumbs because they contain egg whites. (Seriously.) So basically I got a big ol' portobello (the "Magic Mushroom") in a bowl with some lettuce. Didn't really excite me. The cashier said the fries are vegan, though, so that's good, at least. Burger Project is reasonably priced, considering it's one of those newish "look at me I'm cool and hip and everyone likes me" types of burger joints. The staff was friendly and helpful with my dietary requirements, and the line moved fast. But other than that, it was an underwhelming experience and I don't think I'm in a hurry to go back. (I will say the green tube light things that hang down from the ceiling at St Collins Lane are super cool. But nothing really to do with Burger Project.) read more

Once upon a time there was an amazing chef known as Neil Perry. He decided to do something a little different with his spare time and so Burger Project was born. Tucked away upstairs of the recently reopened Australia on Collins arcade, now named St Clair (something to do with all the Parisian & Italian stores I suspect), is where you'll find this delight. Casual and open space with plenty of seating. Order at the counter, find a table and wait for your electronic buzzer to call you. Quick friendly service. Now onto the burgers. Burgers were delicious - full of flavour and just the right size. Fresh ingredients - no pre-prepare here. Three kinds of fries. Didn't like the rose Mayo. Licensed with a small selection of wine/beer. They serve shakes too. All in all, very happy with this little find. I'm sure once St Clair's is fully occupied it might be hard to get a seat. read more

So it seems Melbourne not done with burgers, and it now looks like every man, Dog and celebrity chef is jumping on board. The newest is from the original master chef, Neil Perry. Burger Project, which sit proudly on top of the new St Collins Lane shopping mall. It's hard to rate the atmosphere, because it's the only venue open, in fact it's the only restaurant completed, so it's a bit of a ghost town and it has a feeling of a pop up restaurant. The menu, which is nicely divided between beef and chicken, isn't over the top. I ordered the chilli cheese burger and fries. What I liked about my burger was it was simple, a nice fresh bun, which wasn't overloaded with salad, jalapeño relish, cheese and a meat patty. Though it may have been simple, there was nothing simple about the flavour. I can honestly say it was the best beef I've had in a burger, and you can tell it was made with love. I'm pretty sure Burger Project will do well, just not sure that the location will go it justice, but I'll guess we will have to wait and see when the neighbours move in before we get the complete picture. read more

We stumbled across The Burger Project's sign one day whilst we were in the city, so the next time we were there we decided to pay them a visit. They are in a really nice location. It feels fairly fancy as it is bustling with business people from the city. The location was packed despite having a large number of tables. If you are going with a group of people or as a pair, we strongly advise one person to order while the other reserves a table as you could be waiting for a while. We both ordered 'The Double', fries and strawberry thick shakes. We took a seat with our restaurant pager and waited. The service was pretty quick, which we were impressed with. The burgers looked great despite the fact that they are not as 'fancy' as some of the other popular burgers around. It was obvious that the beef was of really high quality. The patties were thick and full of flavour, and were one of favourite patties we've had to date. The cheese was melted really nicely, and contrasted well against the freshness of the tomato, lettuce and onion. We both aren't huge fans of pickles, but we both quite enjoyed these ones as they tasted more like cucumber. The fries were a good cut and were seasoned nicely, so they are definitely a must try with your burger. The strawberry thick shakes were really refreshing, and strawberry was visible throughout the shake. This made it stand apart from other shakes as it tasted authentic rather than artificial. The location is accessible by public transport, and overall has a positive atmosphere. read more

I had the spicy katsu burger with bacon. A dollar extra to make it spicy. The burger wasn't too bad. The fries had chipotle chilli salt, the chips were OK but not great. I saw the beef burgers and might have seen other reviews the Patti was little too rare then it should. The beef burgers are nothing special. I think this restaurant offering let's the Neil Parry brand down. There many other burger joints that offer something a little more special like 8 bit with there binoche bun. The place was kinda empty on Saturday night. Also had their Neil Parry label pilsner and it wasn't good. read more

Tried the bacon and cheese burger today. Overall a tasty burger, but I would expect nothing less from Neil Perry. What was with the plasticcy cheese though? Note that bunless 'burger in a bowl' is an option for low-carbers, but you don't get a bun refund. There are also a few alcohol options if you fancy a beer or cider with your burger. We came here on a Sunday lunch time to get a solid feed before heading to the football (and sadly, places open on a Sunday are limited in the CBD). After reading a few articles about the excitement surrounding Neil Perry of Rockpool fame bringing his burgers to Melbourne, I was caught up in this excitement and couldn't wait to try them for myself as part of my endless search for Melbourne's best burger. Sadly, all the excitement and hype was all for nothing. Probably more so because I had built it up so much in my mind only to be disappointed with the product on offer. The burger just wasn't tasty. All I'm looking for is a deliciously juicy patty, some cheese, some sauce, maybe some greenery thrown in for good measure, all between a tasty bun and sadly Burger Project missed the mark and they were rather average - in fact not even average, something below that. DELICIOUS BUT NOT FILLING The cheeseburger was delicious. The rose mayo. My god that was good. The texture of the meat was soemthing i haven't experienced in a burger before. Meat cooked with a hint of pink. Delicous. Sadly it is quite small and left me wanting mooore. The little cheeseburger is sadly 10 dollars or just under so eh. Also if you want to a drink it's a rip off you have to buy this tiny plastic cup.....what's up with that?? Classic with bacon was quite good if lacking a little flavour. Not overly greasy which was nice. The fries are excellent and highly recommend one of the dipping sauces for $2. I tried the Aoli. The location is nice but I expected a bit better for the price. read more

Average burger. The bun came soggy and the patty was under seasoned which made all the other salads further dilute the flavour. The patty came medium rare at least and though the line is long service is reasonably fast and organised. read more

Chewy, rubbery, overcooked burgers on crappy buns that don't hold filling in. Chips were good, as was the punt road cab sav. If you know what a good burger is, don't go here. If you want a change from McDonalds, maybe you'll enjoy this. read more

I can't understand the bad reviews except perhaps that everyone has their own idea of what a perfect burger should be, and for some it is not this. However, while saying this may get me many eye rolls, I will say it - this is an American style burger. It is not cooked to an over chewy well-done like a typical Australian burger. It has some pink in the middle. That's good, folks - more flavor. It has yellow cheese. Why? Because that is the best cheese for burgers. Sorry, but it is true. The bun is not brioche, because you should not taste the bun. It is merely the vessel. It's also not too expensive. Because a burger should not be 18 frickin dollars! Okay, I will get down off my high horse. The meat quality is good and flavourful with a nice texture that would be lost if it was cooked past medium. Milkshakes are really delicious and not too sweet or filling to ruin the burger experience. I'm really only knocking off a star because the fries are okay, not great. And I'm not a huge fan of the atmosphere. It's strangely fancy but food court at the same time. That might be helped once there are other food outlets upstairs. So, if you are looking for a good representation of an American burger, this place fits the bill without breaking the wallet. read more
