During our visit there was a bus of high school aged kids that arrived right at the same time as us. The walkway isn't very big so manuevering through the crowd was a bit stressful especially as they were moving faster than us. Once they had passed, it was a much more relaxed and serene experience. The gorge is easy to get to via public transportation. There is a bus stop right at the gorge entrance. Outside of the gorge there are some really stunning views. I'm talking blue lake water at the base of a mountain. Overall, I am glad we made the gorge a stop on our trip. It was well worth it despite the crowd.

That being said, if you're looking for something inexpensive to do while in the area, it's worth considering. We took the funicular to the valley which runs every 15 minutes then an elevator takes you to the Skydeck platform. You may also use the stairs to walk across the bridge. Hallstatt is a 1997 UNESCO world heritage site and known for the production of salt. The platform is over looking Lake Hallstatt and below is the village. There's also a restaurant at this platform. It gets crowded as everyone wants to take a photo at the very edge. You just need to be aggressive and jump right in or else it'll take forever because no one will yield to you if you politely think you're standing in line. There were multiple tour groups and they were not friendly and kept cutting.

The only way to see the castle if you pay a guided tour. Which is not a problem but they dont tell you this when you huy the ticket so you are pretty much screwed. All of the inside is closed!!! They run tours every hour or so. They should articulate better that they only meaningful way to see the castle is via the tour.
