Much of this steep climb is on paved paths, gravel and sometimes stairs. Much of it was shaded by trees. There are benches along the way at frequent intervals giving you a chance to catch your breath.There are various paths but I suspect they all end up in the same places (I don't think it is possible to get lost). Not as crowded with tourists as other local sites, and completely free of charge. At the top is Franziski Schlössl. A local person told me there used to be a restaurant inside of the building but it appears to have long since closed. An unexpected and beautiful adventure! For those counting steps (it's not that many BUT it equates to over 50 flights of steps just going up). I would not recommend for strollers (I am sure it could be done but just a warning as it is a bit steep).

High on a Hill there's a lovely Fortress. Funicular up in 30 seconds as opposed to a 35 minute…read morewalk. The view from the Observation Tower is spectacular, an alp or two is always good eye candy. We spend about 2 hours wandering around, through the museum and courtyard. Look through every window you find and you can see why this Fortress was impenetrable. Also have a go with the bells on way out and if you have time come back to the bell area at 11.00am to hear the original mechanism working. A final drink and snack in the restaurant will afford those great views once more. We arrived early with few people around. Yes there are a lot of steps but they are well designed and shallow. The way down from the tower is separate to the way up so you don't get blockages. The rest rooms are fantastic just at the end of the Museum.

Some of the major highlights of Fortress Hohensalzburg are the magnificent Princes' Rooms, the Magic Theater on the High Level, the Great Armory in the castle courtyard, the various museums (like the marionette museum, the tower and the historical museum) were all very interesting and detailed. Go up for the breathtaking views over the rooftops of the city. It was really interesting to learn how this fortress had evolved over a period of almost 500 years. If you want to do all, it would take 3-5 hours...it's huge.....

Love Locks! This pedestrian bridge crosses some river into…read moreOld Town. Since traffic is heavy throughout Old town, or you just can't get your car in parts of it, most people hike across this foot and bike bridge across the river. The walls of the bridge are lined with locks, of people professing their love and throwing the keys into the river below. You can get the locks at local shops and write your name and your lover's name on the lock. However, not to be a debbie downer, they cut off the locks occasionally. Both times I crossed this bridge, there were accordion bands playing! Double score! It's a nice vantage point to get pics of Old Town! It's a scenic spot. Plus, on the Old Town side of the river, there's a public restroom, which charges a modest fee.

The Makartsteg Footbridge is a fun thing to see while you are in Salzburg, Austria. It is one of…read morethe many bridges that crosses the Salzach River and is better known as the Love Locks Bridge. Tradition has couples snapping locks with their initials on them onto the chain link portion of the Makartsteg bridge. Afterwards they toss the key into the river. This act symbolizes your unbreakable and eternal love. You can purchase locks in a few of the stores just off of the bridge and in the beautiful and quaint old town of Salzburg. Prices reflect being in a highly tourist area. I was told that the locks are removed every few years to make room for new ones. There was no mention about all of the keys laying on the bottom of the river.

Everytime I go to Tegernsee I drop into the Kloster and take visitors there. It is a hidden gem…read moreamongst the hustle and bustle of the beer garden next door and a piece of history that's well worth visiting. The church is beautiful and quiet and I have rarely seen people inside it and it's a serene place of worship amongst the myriad of things that happen on the outside. The walls and ceiling is beautifully painted and done with great attention to detail. It is not as big as the Weiskirsche but the paintings are similar and colorful depicting many stories from the bible and so on. If you happen to be Tegernsee it's well worth a visit. The entrance is fairly plain and has huge wooden door to enter and if you did not go in you would have no idea such a place existed. A must visit when in Tegernsee.

This Abby is breathtaking. It was founded in around 700 making it the oldest in the German-speaking…read moreworld.The abbey features the church of course, a unbelievably beautiful old cemetery, a old bakery that still has a working mill and catacombs. Everything is free to visit except for the catacombs which cost not very much at all. The catacombs will only take you about 15 minutes to explore but there are very very steep stairs that you need to climb to get to them. Everything else you could explore in less than an hour. Does Abby is right next to the Funicular taking you up to the fortress so it's a good idea to tour both of these at the same time.

While wandering around Salzburg, we found this place. On the outside it's a cute little chapel in…read morethe middle of a cemetery, but it's over 500 years old. So we went in to check it out. On the inside, it's pretty cool. I like the stained glass windows and the large stone markers along the wall that used to be part of the floor. They were carved and you could see pictures and writing on them. Unfortunately, the chapel floor was covered with "art" in the form of 100 or 200 clay heads on the floor, many of which looked disfigured. So I liked the church but I thought the heads were weird.
