    Melanzane alla parmigiana
    Mike L.

So on my travels in Italy, no restaurant compared to the thought and artful approach to cuisine at this establishment. Twice I had to visit to feel I wasn't cheating myself on my two weeks in Abruzzo. The menu Is crafted daily with locally sourced ingredients and each dish pays homage to the Abruzzese style. On the first evening I visited, I ordered the Papperdalle de L'Aquila. It was a fresh prepared pasta with a mixed meat sausage. My wife enjoyed the Melanzane alla parmigiana which has always been her favorite, and she was in heaven. For secondi we ordered the polpette in salsa rossa. I will have to say these meatballs were the softest I've ever eaten in my life. I could only observe they had just the right bread-to-pork ratio as they literally melted in your mouth. The second time we visited I had my heart set on Arrostacini, we ordered pasta dishes, which both were once again PHENOMENAL... My wife got the spaghetti Montepulciano D'Abruzzo which was a wheat based pasta with wine sauce aptly based with it's namesake wine and chopped lamb. I loved the arrostacini, it was simple salt and seasoned lamb skewers but prepared true to the regional specialty. I could go on all day about how on two separate nights on one week on the summer of 2019 the restaurant created magical food experiences and ruined us for other restaurants in our native Seattle. I would easily fly a 13 hour international flight and drive 90 minutes just to enjoy another meal at this well hidden gem.

We dined at Buonvento for our last night in Sulmona. It was seconds away from where we were staying and I'm glad we went! We sat right away at 8pm on a Saturday and it got busier when we sat down. Our server was friendly and spoke some English, which was nice for us. We had the meat/cheese antipasto and the vegetarian antipasto. I loved the first, and my family loved the vegetarian one too (most things just weren't my thing, but if you like stuffed peppers, egg/quiche, fried zucchini, eggplant then you will like it!) We had the house red wine and loved it! Entrees ordered: two chitarra al ragu (great) a pasta dish with beans and baccala (enjoyed) and a parmigiana baccala (she loved it!) We had coffees to end the night and were pleased. They had a nice dessert menu but we passed. $1 coperto a person. There is no English on the menu (expected as this is a small town and not a touristy city) so with the help of my dad and an online translator we made do. Would come again next time I'm in Sulmona.

We had lunch at Taverna de li Caldera a party of 10. This restaurant located in Pacentro, Italy a town in the mountains over Sulmona is a gem in Abruzzo, housed in the fundago of a noble palace in the beautiful historic center of Pacentro with a spectacular view of the Peligno Valley. Entering the restaurant the entrance has various Michelin guide (although dated) reinforces the quality of this long established restaurant! Some reviews say the Service is slow or inattentive but I found this the opposite. Our Server was attentive and I liked that she took our orders after each entre allowing plenty of time between courses and never felt rushed. For the Antipasta, I chose Bollito di baccala in sala verde (18e) It was delicate and light and not over salty. Insalate di funghi porcini con rucola e Parmigiano (18 e) The porcini mushrooms were absolutely the freshest and so fragrant mushroom I have ever eaten!! Primi Pappardelle con funghi freschi (18 e) Pasta was so fresh and made with raw ingredients Secondi Coscio di agnello lardellato al forno (18e) This is where they lose a star as the agnello (lamb chops) were tasteless and no flavor and had a lot of fat. Very rustic Dolce Pizza dolce abuzzese (6 e)
