We have been looking to add a dog to our family for a few months. Our precious Buster crossed the Rainbow Bridge about a year and a half ago. We were trying to see what life was like without a dog after our heartbreak. However we would always find ourselves looking at dog videos and pictures. Then one day the wife said she was ready to have another dog, especially being with the COVID issue messing up things. So the search started in earnest. BTW, there are a lot of great dogs that deserve a good home and you can find them easily on the www. I started following various shelters on FB and Instagram and checking daily for a potential new family member. Bulverde Area Humane Society was one I checked everyday. Their posts on FB etc. were a great way to see new dogs (and cats) that would become available. After numerous failures (10+) of trying to adopt various dogs we were finally successful getting one at BAHS. They were very responsive to our inquiry. WE set up a meeting and it went great and we came home with a great little pup. BAHS is so helpful with the adoption. They don't just turn you lose with your new pup. They give you a lot of great information and resources for you and your new companion. They also give you a goodie bag, a generous amount of the food the pet has been eating, appropriate toys, a leash and collar so you aren't scrambling to get to petsmart before they close on Christmas eve. I also have to give a shout out to Penny who facilitated the adoption and was so very informative about this type dog and what to expect and particular care. She has a passion for the work there and is a huge plus to that organization. She even texted a few days later checking how things were going. So if you are looking for a new family member I would recommend taking a look here, or if you are looking for a shelter to donate to this would be a great one as it is a smaller shelter than others we have dealt with but they do big shelter volume of pets. They are worthy of your consideration. Thank You So Much BAHS, and Snickers (AKA Shaggy) is doing really well and we are enjoying seeing him come out of his shell.

We decided that our new pup "Kika" needed a friend after about 4 months, so we found Rudy at the Bulverde Shelter.

Eden Animal Sanctuary - Manfred, homecoming!

    Eden Animal Sanctuary

    (1 review)

Anyone that has known me for any length of time knows that chelonians (broad way to group turtles…read moreand tortoises together... they're different, people!) are my spirit animal, and I've wanted one as a pet for a very very very long time. After a lot of research about all things tortoise and acquiring/assembling my set up, I decided that just buying a tortoise from a store wasn't an option. It was captive bred or adoption. A captive bred situation didn't work out and I stumbled upon Eden Animal Sanctuary (and Manfred!) with a Craig's List search. They're a chelonian specific rescue that operates on a private property. They rehabilitate surrendered turtles/tortoises and find the PERFECT homes for them, if they're considered adoptable. Filled out an "I'm interested" form on AdoptAPet.com and FB messaged the sanctuary (https://www.facebook.com/edenanimalsanctuary), letting them know that I'd submitted the form. Rachel responded to my message within minutes, sending me the adoption application and asking for pictures of my set up. The application was long and very thorough. I was a little nervous filling it out, even though I knew that Manfred belonged with me and that I could give him an amazing life (and that I'm going to have to put him in my will because he will likely outlive me). Then the waiting began. I was anxiously prepared to wait over a weekend (as I'd sent in the application on a Thursday evening), but, on Friday afternoon, I received an email saying that I'd been approved! I may or may not have danced around like an idiot for the rest of the day. Just kidding, I totally did. The following Saturday, a couple friends and I made our way to an adoption event in Spring Branch, where the rescue had a presence. I had no difficulty ignoring all the adoptable dogs (not usually the case with me) at the event as I made my way to the turtle/tortoise table. I knew it was my Manfred the moment I saw him. I chatted with Rachel a little bit and filled out his adoption form, promising to return him to the sanctuary if I could no longer care for him. I was also able to meet a couple of the other chelonians from the rescue, including a teenaged sulcata named Radar and three box turtles. I paid my adoption fee (donations and adoption fees go towards building habitats and caring for the chelonians) and skipped away with my new, best reptile buddy. All in all, I can't recommend Eden Animal Sanctuary enough. It's obvious to me that Rachel loves what she does and loves the animals even more.
