Finally stopped on the way back to N.C., and checked out the Fairchild Oak. Massive tree. Wish I knew the exact age of the tree. Quiet spot, and a great place to take a break from I-95

What a beautiful park not too far from the Daytona/Ormond area. We were looking to get out and experience nature on Father's Day Eve and this place fit the bill as close, not too crowded, and one awe-inducing tree. The Fairchild Oak has been standing for hundreds of years and has low branches that shoot out sideways and rest on the ground. Picasso himself couldn't have imagined a tree that formed this way. It was a very interesting tree and something I never thought I'd be impressed by. The park also has some hiking/walking trails, a pretty decent rest room, and lots of scenery, some of which is labeled. If you're looking to get out and get some fresh air, this might be the place to do it. Even the drive there was beautiful with the low hanging trees which made the road more like a tunnel.

I posted a trail map. Route A is accessible from ruins park. It is 1/4 mile from the entrance to park. It is a 2 mile walk. Route B is accessible from bulow creek state park. It is a 1.5 mile walk. The trail starts by the Fairchild Oak Tree. You can bike or walk from A to B and it is 6 miles each way. Free parking at Bulow Creek park. $4 donation fee at ruins park. Restrooms at both parks.

This park offers a few hiking trails and a huge live oak as its main attraction~ the Fairchild Oak is massive and has one branch that broke off, but has branches that pop up from the ground, obviously part of the main tree. I am such a tree hugger~ so any stops for big, ole trees is ok with me. We did dip down one of the trails with a little boardwalk. There is plenty of water runoff and little streams. You can hear the water trickling downhill before you see it. There is a pavilion with picnic tables and plenty of room to picnic.

When I heard about the 2,000 year old tree called The Fairchild Oak, I made a point to stop and see it on our very next trip down to Orlando. I can't say my hubby or my teen daughter were nearly as thrilled as I was, but when momma wants to do something, momma does it! LOL The tree is located inside Bulow Creek State Park in Ormond Beach and is just off of I-10. If you are traveling, it's very easy to get to and I highly recommend you stop and take a look-see. You'll also get to stretch your legs, so it's a win-win. Like my daughter, your kids may not be all that thrilled to see something as simple as a tree, but once they do get up next to this massive tree, they are sure to look up in awe just as my daughter did. She actually even said, "Thank you, mom for making me do this." And she said it in a sincere way, not that sarcastically, annoyed teenage way. I hear there are a lot of other things to do at this State Park, but I just came for the tree. We weren't here more than about 20 minutes. Hubby and daughter wanted to go much sooner than that, but I took some time standing there with my hand on that 2,000 year old tree reflecting on life and all the things that tree has been through. It was a very humbling experience. Make a point to stop here!

I love it here! This gives you a taste of the old Florida before it became so developed. The scenery is breath taking. Trees with huge areas of shade line the street as you enter the park. There's great hiking areas as well as places to put in your kayak. I feel lucky to live so close to this awesome place.

    A great park

A very large park Bulow Creek State Park is a huge tract of land that was acquired in 1981. Over 3,000 acres of great hiking and nature. The park has some great hiking trails with informative signs explaining the plants and critters that live in the wilderness. Lots of great old trees in the swamps, tidal areas, and flood plains. You can hike for hours and not see all the different areas and cool things. A wonderful park that lets you be with nature and explore and learn about the woods and wilderness of the area.

Lovely place full of history and things to see. Plenty of parking. The park is well kept, safe and easy to walk around. We loved it here and will be coming back. Make sure to bring a good camera, lots of picture opportunities all around. Make sure to make all the way to the sugar mill ruins.

This is the home to Fairchild Oak, a 2000 year old live oak tree. It is a nice place to visit and the oak is very majestic. The park itself also has geocaching, restroom facilities, trails and picnic area. Bulow Creek park is not to be confused with Bulow Plantation Ruins but both are a nice surprise. These are on the Ormond Scenic Loop which is one of the most breathtaking routes in Florida. I implore you to get lost in this area one afternoon.

I always stop here when I drive the Ormond Scenic Loop. It's always a pleasant place to visit. The giant 2000-something year old oak tree is a staggering sight. There are some scenic trails that are nice to walk through when it's not blistering hot out! Public restrooms on site, too, which is always a plus.

We came to see and explore the ruins and hiking trails along the river. Unfortunately, most of the trails were roped off. We assume they are still cleaning up and preventing widow makers along the trail post Hurricane Irma. The small boat ramp, picnic area and restrooms/screened pavilion are all in great condition as is the immediate Sugar Mill ruins. We'll be back to hike the trails and possibly kayak that peaceful winding river. Hopefully, this spring ... with the manatees 4 Stars for what it was before and will be again! Cleanup takes time. But don't make the trip, YET, if you're specifically looking to hike..... Then again, if you're looking for a worthwhile volunteer gig ..... our beautiful preserves are always in need

It's ok. Not much to see there and the rangers seem to be on a power trip. I don't recommend it.

Specifically, leashed dogs are welcome on 0.6 miles of driveable coast from Rockefeller Dr. to Millsap Rd. However, when we arrived in Ormond Beach around noon on the first Sunday of December, high tide had recently peaked and was still receding so driving onto the sand wasn't possible. Instead, we parked for free in the Andy Romano Beachfront Park lot, adjacent to the Millsap Rd. car ramp, and walked down to the sand. The park itself, including its beach, does not allow dogs, but we had no issue parking in the lot for free with our dog and entering the beach on foot via the car ramp. Even with the driving lanes through the sand, the beach here is rather narrow... but that means a minimal walk to the surf. Plus, the sand here is so very soft! And clean! Of course, the Atlantic Ocean is colder than the Gulf of Mexico, but the waves are much more impressive than on my side of Florida. Because this lot is right next to the car ramp, I would park here again in the future & walk to the sand. On our visit, plenty of open sand was available near the closed vehicle ramp so we had a very short walk from our car. We saved the entrance fee but still had decent access to our car. The parking lot at Andy Romano Beach Front Park is a good size, and was barely half full on our visit. Also, the family-style bathrooms are large, clean, & adequately stocked.

4 reasons to come to this park. ***NEW INFORMATION***…read more There isn't any fee for everything I'm mentioning EXCEPT the front part of the off beach parking area ****** 1st is MY reason: I go here because it has 2 fenced in HUGH dog play areas. My girls go into the small dog play area while yes, big dogs go in the other one. Each play area has benches, water and poop bags in different areas of the park. (Some people leave balls there also otherwise, you bring your own) I walk the perimeter while the girls run after me and the other dogs. My 2 rescues "mother/daughter" duo are still puppies, full of muscle and need to run for their exercise. (for me to rest because they are a handful) 2nd: There is A children's play area. I know they have swings slides picnic benches but I'm not sure what else because I don't have a child to go there. I hear all of the children laughing, having fun so I'm sure it's pretty nice. 3rd: They also have back to back courts for... I know one is basketball, the other one may be pickleball? Not quite sure but again I see lots of people playing on the courts even if I'm not paying attention to them 4th: Which is most likely you wanted 1st is the large parking area across from the beach As you first drive into the park, there is a huge off beach parking area where You can (of course) park and walk right across to the beach. * BE AWARE, It is no longer "free" parking (just like ALL the parking areas in Volusia county) **The parking areas are free for local residents as long as you register with your car license plate and proof that you are indeed a resident here. ***I don't know what the policy is, you will have to look it up in The Volusia County rules I do know it's $20 a day parking (and all the parking areas now) BUT, I do know it is a great park with something to do for all AS for pictures, I will put them up when I go again BUT, here is a shot of my cute ladies and something strange that someone put up. Stick figures that I don't know their meaning
