The marker reads, "Five Indiana regiments were formed at this rendezvous point in 1846-1847 for service in the Mexican War. The first 3,000 men departed for active duty under Brigadier-General Joseph Lane during July, 1846." For those unfamiliar, the Mexican-American war lasted from 1846 to 1848 and followed the US annexation of Texas which Mexico still considered Mexican territory since the government did not recognize the treaty signed by Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna when he was a prisoner of the Texian Army during the 1836 Texas Revolution. The war was decisively won by the United States and the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. The treaty gave the United States undisputed control of Texas and established the US-Meixcan border of the Rio Grande. It also ceded to the United States the present-day states of California, Nevada, and Utah, most of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming. Around 20% of the landmass of the 2020 United States excluding Alaska. So to those who Hoosiers formed up from here to fight for my country, thank you. [Review 13538 overall, 857 of 2020.]

This 1970's Courthouse is classic Mid-Century Modern building designed by Indianapolis-based architects Wright, Porteous and Lowe. Wright, Porteous and Lowe designed many notable structures including the City-County building and Children's Museum in Indianapolis. Jeffersonville is the county seat for Clark County. This is the third courthouse to serve the county. Most notable, the building has beautiful arches surrounding the main structure. My visit inside was brief as the interior architecture as not as interesting as the beautiful facade. I saw lots of run-of-the-mill offices. The deputy that I spoke with did not know of any history regarding the building and he was busy with his deputy duties. Outside, there is a refreshingly modern Veteran's Memorial. Friendly protesters were protesting outside the building. This is a fully working Courthouse. We found free street parking near the building. The building is worth a drive-by if you like modern architecture (which I do).
