Been going to Bullet since 1998. Really cool owner. Gym is geared toward Olympic lifting and powerlifting. Serious gym but a lot of fun.

Dropped in a couple times last weekend, had everything you need to get a good lift in. Loved it, perfect old school style gym.

Hot House Yoga - DOWNTOWN MISSOULA

Best. Yoga. Studio. Ever…read more I've thought about writing a Yelp review for various places - restaurants, bars, other yoga studios - but this is the first one I've actually ever written. That's because I can't not rave about Hot House and what a special place it is. The classes are phenomenal, the studio itself is simple, nice, and clean, and the owners are so welcoming and wonderful (and Jenn is one of the best, most experienced teachers I've ever had). I've been going to Hot House regularly for about 4 1/2 years now. It's just as good as the studios in the Bay Area and New York, where I lived before moving to Missoula. Scratch that. It's better because it's such an amazing little community. Hot House always makes my day better, whether it's been a bad one or a really good one. My practice has really improved at Hot House. The core power classes provide rigorous workouts. The teachers have great, creative sequences, pay close attention to alignment, and bring their own unique style and voice. Some teachers/class times are a little more mellow, and all teachers encourage us students to make the practice our own and be mindful of our bodies. Highly highly recommend Hot House.

There are only a couple of good instructors there. One is Jennifer, the owner. A few are…read moreannoying. One is like a Marine-trained football coach who speaks in a clipped voice and paces his mat like he's on the sidelines, all while talking about making it a moving meditation. Very contradictory and like he needs to be macho to feel good about teaching yoga. Cognitive dissonance.

I had the chance to return here for a walk-in practice session in May, during a short visit to…read moreMissoula to see a good friend. The studio has matured and changed since I first started to attend, with basic Bikram sessions as well as hot pilates and advanced classes offered a few times a week. What hasn't changed is the great combination of experienced, encouraging instructors with an enthusiastic and dedicated contingent of hot yoga practioners, men as well as women, who are Montanan to the marrow: fit, fun-loving, and open for indoor and outdoor adventure. If you happen to be visiting Missoula on a weekend, you can definitely attend class as a drop-in for around $15, more if you rent a towel and mat, and then finish off the morning with a visit to the Saturday farmers market at the Clark Fork followed by tea at Lake Missoula Tea Co. or coffee and honey toast at Black Coffee, on Spruce St. Personally, I find yoga a great way to start the weekend: you're up fairly early, get a great bloodflow going, then can pick up organic fruits, veg, and ranched meats or wild caught fish before settling into the day with a great cup of tea or a freshly roasted single origin pourover. That's what makes downtown Missoula so special: there is nothing here that would be out of place in a higher end, more densely populated urban area like Portland, Seattle, Chicago, NYC, or the Bay Area: it's just on a smaller scale. And with bigger mountains! The Bikram studio here is as good as any I've encoutered in San Francisco and the Peninsula, just with a smaller following and fewer classes daily. But my visits back to Missoula just wouldn't be the same without it. Check it out next time you've got a few days of downtime and you want to see what modern-day Montana looks and feels like. Ask the people there for tips as well for hikes, bike routes, and jogging paths. Chances are, they will have lots of suggestions for making the most of your Big Sky experience. Lots.
