Kendall's Hallmark Shop

Kendall's Hallmark Shop

(3 reviews)

I have never felt so blatantly profiled and disrespected in a retail store as I did at Kendall's…read moreHallmark Shop. The second my family walked in (my husband and daughter are Hispanic, I'm white), the woman behind the counter hit us with a sharp, accusatory "Can I help you?"--not a greeting, not a welcome, but a challenge. When I said we were just browsing, she kept pressing like we needed to justify being there. It got to the point where I finally asked, "Are we free to browse?" Instead of owning the behavior, she deflected with, "I just thought you might be looking for something specific," while keeping the same hostile tone. She knew exactly what she was doing--she just didn't want to say it out loud. At the same time, a white customer walked in and was greeted warmly and normally. No interrogation. No hovering. The contrast was obvious. And the hovering didn't stop. She repeatedly left the counter to watch us while we browsed, staring like we were about to steal something. It was uncomfortable, unnecessary, and completely unacceptable. For context, I'm not a casual shopper. I collect Disney-licensed Hallmark pieces and was specifically looking at the "it's a small world" collection. The moment she seemed to realize I actually had money to spend, her tone shifted. Suddenly she was eager to engage--but not honestly. She started telling me the collection would be hard to find because the ride was permanently closed and that it was "big news." That's simply not true. I gave her a neutral response to avoid engaging, but she doubled down. I politely corrected her and explained if it was down - it was likely routine maintenance. She continued insisting it was closed forever and being removed from the parks, and how upset so many people are by it. At that point, I explained that I'm a Disney travel planner and that there has been zero communication from Disney about this park staple being removed from the parks. I even checked both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World apps in real time--both showed the ride open and operating with active wait times. She still insisted I was wrong. So not only were we profiled and treated with suspicion from the moment we walked in, she then tried to mislead us to push a sale--and wouldn't back down even when proven wrong. The irony is I was fully prepared to spend a significant amount of money on multiple collections that day. Instead, we walked out. I've shopped here before, spent money here, and recommended this store to others. That ends now. If you value being treated with basic respect--or just prefer not to be followed, profiled, and lied to while shopping--take your business elsewhere.

Fully stocked, friendly staff. I don't have a Hallmark store near me so it's nice to find one. Nice…read morelocation. Sad that the Hallmark ornaments have gone up in price by 30% now.
