Let me put it this way: Every city should have a Buford Highway. This road is so much more than just a high-speed, dangerous, suburban 2-lane and 3-lane Highway coming into ATL from the NE Burbs. This is ethnic food paradise. All along this road for miles, you will find one plaza after another filled with all kinds of Latino, Asian, Indian, European goodies and so, so much more. El Rey is a great taco shop, Sweet Hut has lovely bubble tea and pastries, and Bismillah is awesome for curry, and that is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. You could spend a year driving up and down this road and never eat at the same place for dinner twice. Oh and don't get me started on the delicious Crawfish Shack, which sells the cheapest and most delicious Cajun style crawfish in the area, despite being Vietnamese rather than from the Bayous of the Deep South. Buford Highway is Atlanta's mecca of Asian and Latin American businesses. It's best known for its numerous ethnic restaurants, which is what this review is primarily based upon. For all intents and purposes, this review covers Buford Highway as it starts inside the perimeter (ITP) around Brookhaven, north towards Chamblee and Doraville to I-285 and outside the perimeter (OTP), into unincorporated parts of DeKalb County, and finally into the city of Norcross and Gwinnett County. Buford Highway is miles upon miles of mostly older, unattractive strip malls. However, many of those strip malls are filled with great restaurants offering delicious, authentic cuisine that can often be difficult to find elsewhere in the Atlanta metro. When I first moved to Atlanta in 2000, I was unimpressed with Buford Highway. I guess I was expecting more of a big city "Chinatown," though over the years I've slowly grown to love it. In the past 10-15 years, several Asian businesses have closed or moved north into Gwinnett County. Examples include Hong Kong Supermarket and Happy Valley seafood and dim sum restaurant, which moved from Buford Highway near Clairmont Rd. to Jimmy Carter Blvd. in Norcross. Pung Mie Chinese restaurant became Fung Mie and moved to Pleasant Hill Rd. in Duluth. China Delight, one of my favorite Chinese restaurants at the time, closed in 2011. 24/7 Korean restaurants 88 Tofu House and Go Hyang House closed. Other closures include Cafe 101 (it reopened as "1968 at Cafe 101"), Pho 96, and 99 Ranch Market. Even with all the closures, there have been many openings of new restaurants and cafes over the past 5 years or so. Some of these include the popular and wildly successful Sweet Hut Bakery & Cafe, Honey Bits, Kung Fu Tea, Paris Baguette, Nam Phuong (second location), Kochi Maru, I Luv Pho (third location), Pho 24, China Village, Gu's Bistro, Tostones Latin Cafe, Viet-Nomie's, Karaoke Melody 2, Quickly, Tei Wei Chinese Kabobs, and Tempo Doeloe. Bon Ga Korean Restaurant moved from Norcross to the Global Forum Shopping Center closer to the perimeter. So, fear not, Buford Highway is still alive and well. When it comes to Asian food, Buford Highway is dominated by Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants and then, to a lesser extent, Korean restaurants. There's not much Japanese or sushi, but the best sushi restaurant in Atlanta (Sushi House Hayakawa) does reside on Buford Highway. Though I'm less familiar with Latin American food, I've had my fair share of Latin cuisine on Buford Highway. The Latin American restaurants are mostly Mexican, though there is a presence of Argentinian, Colombian, Cuban, Dominican, El Salvadorian, Peruvian, Puerto Rican, Uruguayan, and Venezuelan to name several. Highlights include: Mexican: El Taco Veloz El Senor Taco Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit (seafood) El Potro La Pastorcita Taqueria El Rey Del Taco Don Pedro Other: Sabores del Plata - Argentinian, meats Havana Restaurant - Cuban Rincon Latino - Central American, including El Salvadorian Natarica Grill - Venezuelan Mi Pilon - Puerto Rican Tostones Latin Cafe - all sorts including Colombian Machu Picchu - Peruvian Red & Green Brazilian Steakhouse - churrascaria Additional restaurants worth mentioning are Crawfish Shack (fresh seafood), Penang (Southeast Asian cuisine), Panahar (Bangladeshi/Indian), Mini Hot Pot (Taiwanese hot pot), and Harmony Vegetarian Chinese. The above list of restaurants is by no means a comprehensive list of places to go on Buford Highway, though it can serve as a good starting point. It's a 3.5 for me. Buford Highway is the "international" section at a grocery store. When I was growing up Buford Highway was the place we went every Sunday for groceries. At the time it wasn't as extensive as it is now. There were no H marts or Kung Fu Tea. We had Dinho market and the China town food court. Then later on 99 Ranch moved in. My relatives from Taiwan use to come here when Canton Cooks was located across the street from where Sweet Hut is now......I had an Uncle that use to order a sea cucumber dish at Canton Cooks...if you never had sea cucumber just imagine eating a slug....eww...it creeps me out just thinking about it....I have a love hate relationship with this place. I love all the international restaurants and groceries but I hate the traffic and the jay walkers. Some area of the place is super clean while other area looks like a hamster's cage..... I know some yelpers are in love with this area and we should be getting their wedding announcement any day now. But to be honest most of the restaurants here are okay except for Kung Fu tea-that's a 5 star all the way. I come here for groceries and boba tea. Otherwise I just rather go on else where....maybe if I hadn't spent every weekend coming here as a kid-between Chinese church, Chinese language class and grocery shopping I would be more enthusiastic about it.... read more

There's a lot on Buford Highway. I love Buford Highway Farmer's Market, the Waffle House (is an institution- Fk what you heard) and I Love Pho. There are A LOT of massage parlors. I tried to go to one once, I was greeted at a 2 way glass window and denied entry because I didn't have an appointment (O-K, then). We have a sex shop/ head shop - Starship Enterprises. There used to be a sex theater and a strip club in the same plaza. The latter 2 are gone now. Buford Highway changes a lot- and fast. A donut shop or chicken shack will be here today and gone next year. Currently, BuFoHwy is gaining recognition as an international food haven. The surrounding neighborhoods are very diverse, and have become increasingly and rapidly more diverse over time. I think it's great. I discovered TEA Walk last year, an annual BH event that celebrates the communities immigrant roots and multicultural flavor. It was terrific- free food and free entertainment. A lot of awesome BH events popping up lately - foodie Trolley Tours, half marathon, Day of the Dead Halloween event, bike tours. Follow WeLoveBuHi on Insta or Facebook for more info. I remember when Doraville was a little bit city, and a little bit country. Listening to Journey on the Jukebox at the local diner. The new manifestation of this suburb of hip hop, Black Hollywood Atlanta folds a lot of horizon expanding fun and deliciousness into an already rich cultural center. The Buford Highway is the only reason why I come to Atlanta. I was so happy to find that I can easily drive to Atlanta instead of catching a flight to CA or NYC to eat decent food. Plus, the hotels are much cheaper. Hungry? Just drive up and down this road and pick any one of the Vietnamese, Korean, or Chinese restaurants. There is the Chinatown Mall, off of Buford that houses some of the best Chinese food mix Atlanta has to offer. My favorite places have Xiao Long Bao like Northern Chinese Restaurant or Chef Liu. Also, make sure to stop at a bakery. You can also follow the Buford Highway North to one of the most awesome towns ever- Duluth (aka Koreatown). The all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ, jim-jil-bangs (saunas of the decent variety, like Jeju Sauna), and no-rae-bangs (karaoke) are abundant! read more

Dear Buford Highway- You have wonderful tacquerias and restaurants sprinkled alongside, but you also have some of the worst drivers in the city. You are an quick way home for me, but idiots keep wheeling their children and ice cream carts all the way across your seven lanes. You offer me a nice shortcut to Lenox and Phipps, but you were closed in sections by the recent flooding. You are home to two different CDC campuses, but are clogged with small and large buses waddling along. I wish I could quit you, but I know I won't. read more

My last review was in 2011. Now it's 2017. That was so long ago! What did I do with my life? I just got old and fat, thanks to Buford Highway. The last time I review this, Buford Hwy was recovering from the great 2008 recession. A lot of businesses disappeared. That was the low point for Buford Hwy. But a few gems survived. The recession trimmed away the mediocre businesses, and only the strong survived. Now, in 2017, everything seems better. My favorite Boba Tea spot, Kung Fu Tea, opened up. That gives Buford Hwy automatic 5 stars. I've been to that place over 140 times. I don't know what they put in their tea, it must be some sort of opiates. In fact, my mouth is watering writing about Kung Fu Tea. Damnit, now I want to go get some. Speaking of Boba Tea, you still have Sweet Hut, the newcomers Formosa Tea House and Vivi Bubble Tea. They're all 1 block from each other. Competition is fierce! It's pretty cut-throat these days. Not only good places are opening up, they're opening up pretty much right next to each other, talking trash and such. The old, Vietnamese favorites are still there: Quoc Huong, Nam Phuong, Pho Dai Loi, etc. Those guys are probably the best of the best Vietnamese cuisine Atlanta has to offer. Go to Quoc Huong for Banh Mi, Com Dac Biet, and Pho. Go to Nam Phuon for Pho, Bun Bo Hue, and Bo Luc Lac (Shaking Beef), and go to Pho Dai Loi for Pho and Bun Bo Hue. That's a lot of 2-3 letter words. But they're so good. Mamak also opened up. That is another great place. Their Hainan Chicken is the bomb. Also, try their Noodle Dishes--amazing. Another old favorite, Ming's BBQ, is still there. No, they don't serve cats (obscure reference). But they do have some great Honey BBQ Pork. Seriously, in that plaza alone, you have so many great food choices. A little off of Buford Hwy is Chinese Food Court. That's another whole wormhole I can get into in what they offer. So I won't write it in this post. Also, one of my other favorite places, Good Luck Gourmet opened. It's Shanxi cuisine. That's the first time I've tried Shanxi style cuisine. You guys should check it out too. It's similar to Sichuan cuisine. There's still the Authentic Mexican places, Korean places, foot massage places, and a bunch of others. The quality of places is so dense, I don't know how you can visit them all. For newbies, I suggest you join one of Daniel B's Buford Hwy UYEs--if you can get a spot. It's more exclusive than the Centurion Card from Amex. ProTip: if you rub him the right way, he'll let you in. My last review was 3 stars. Buford Hwy upgraded itself to 5 stars. Buford Highway is the answer. What's the question? Anything relating to great food. Whenever friends start asking me about authentic Latin inspired or Asian inspired restaurants, it's hard to not mention one of several restaurants from Chinese, Latin, Cuban, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, some Korean (you're better off heading to Gwinnett/pleasant hillish area for your Korean eats now), which can satisfy your burrito or bubble tea needs, rolled ice cream to Pho, and all things in between. I'd be lying if I said the many many miles of Buford hwy were pretty, new, and inviting. In fact, several of the strip malls (this seems to be the go to for many of the restaurants) are kinda ran down, packed and on top of each other, but it's the inside that counts with these restaurants. I wont go listing every restaurant i've been to here, because there are much better lists than what I can come up with (check out Daniel B's Buford hwy list...it's second to none), I will say that if you want really good food, great flavors, decent prices and a lot of all three, Buford Highway, all parts of it, likely have something for you. read more

Dear Buford Highway, You were with me during my first UYE (at Man Chun Hong) and you haven't let me down since. It's hard to believe that I lived in Atlanta for three years before meeting you, because I can't do without you now. You were with me through vulnerable moments, like when I admitted to 20 fellow Yelpers that the only Chinese food I had ever eaten was chicken & broccoli. I still don't love Chinese food, but I daydream about Pho Dai Loi's spring rolls and Grandma's bibimbap (Stone Bowl House) on a regular basis. I'm now addicted to Chinese foot massages (I blame James H. for that) and I often crave Quickly's taro milk tea. Heck, US-13 even makes me happy. You get me from Brookhaven to Midtown without much hassle and spoil me with a view of Atlanta's skyline along the way. Buford Highway is not only a huge artery that weaves its way through much of Atlanta and OTP, but it's a one of the most uniquely crafted culinary hearths I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Most larger cities will have a collection of ethnic markets, shops, eateries, etc and they'll tend to congregate in a specific part of town, but everything pales in comparison to BuHi. One of my favorite things to tell people about Atlanta is that you could "spend every day of a year eating at a different restaurant for all three meals on BuHi and not even make it to half of what there is to offer." The depth of culinary variety, business variety, and over sentiment toward the wonderful cultures of our world is unmatched. Now, we've been in Atlanta for a little over a year and our paths have crossed with BuHi more than handful of times. Where I haven't had as many experiences with some of the wonderful restaurants available, we have had a chance to check out a few. Buford Hwy. gives Atlanta the ethnic flavor that it otherwise would be sorely lacking. Food from my childhood can be found in abundance (if you could't guess by my name, my heritage is Vietnamese) and these are the only establishments that I have tried. I am expanding my food horizons and want to get to the Latin and Chinese places that are scattered about. Sweet Hut really skyrockets my rating for Buford Hwy. I discovered this place probably about 2 months ago when I attended (I think) my second UYE. It's been a lasting love affair since. Oh and I cannot take away the spotlight from the Buford Highway Farmers Market. While it is quite different from the YDFM, its proximity makes it very attractive to me. read more

Buford Highway, I will always come to you when I am in need of seriously good food. Mainly asian food, though. You are so, so, so good to me and my belly. Some of my favorites along the street: Quickly: Best place for Bubble Tea in the Atlanta area. The tea's not as good as Snow Mountain's but their chicken nuggets are soooo good. And they give you a good amount for your monies. Kabobs: Located in the same square as Quickly (Intown Plaza). Overpriced, but the kabobs are pretty good. I'm a fan of the pan fried tofu, the squid, and the lamb kabobs. The millions of tofu houses: You'll find these everywhere on Buford Highway. They all have good food, but some have better side dishes than others (can't recall the names). Pho 24: Open all day, every day. Great late night place to go to. They have a pretty extensive menu. Lee's Bakery: Go to place for banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches). People there are always friendly, and they have a buy five get one free deal. $2.50 a sandwich last time I was there. If you're in/around the Atlanta area, you need to visit Buford Highway. NEED to. If you want good asian food. None of that silly P.F. Chang's business. read more

Easily the best road for food in the city. Best Chinese food (Chef Liu, Gu's Bistro). Best Vietnamese Food (Dai Loi, Quoc Huong). Best Sushi (Hayakawa), Best Grocery Store (Buford Highway Farmers Market). This road is one of the biggest reasons I couldn't leave Atlanta after college. Not sure what the word limit is for a Yelp review, but I could easily hit it 10 times over singing the praises of Buford Highway. Lock your car doors, though-- it's not the safest area. For a major thoroughfare, 'the Buford Highway' moves pretty well, and might be part of my regular afternoon commute thang, when I have to pickup one child near pill hill, and then the other near Embry Hills. I had experimented with taking Chamblee Tucker, but the Buhi moves quicker. I also enjoy seeing all the restaurants and shops along the way. If I get too sleepy, I just stop off at the Pinetree Motel (on Mcclave Drive, just ITP) for a little cat-nap, then scrub off the bedbugs, and hit the road again. All of those that haven't dined at some of the places on the Buhi are really missing out. read more

If you want the best Asian food in the city, come here. I have friends from Douglasville who drive over for it. I can't even remember the names of all the places I've been to here, mainly because most of the signs are in a language I can't read. Wow, an actual review of a street ? What do i think of buford hwy, and all of its eateries, shoppes, and activities? BRILLIANT ! Like some others say, its the best kept secret, thats not much of a secret. I guess some can say it may get ruined if people actually realize the great deals, eats, and fun you can have here. Also, great place for us "street walkers" and weary travelers tired of the same ol segregated south. Don't get it confused, this place is more then just the road where "foreigners" eat ! Its a family environment, where kids can walk safe on the streets, and people of different walks of life be themselves.
