blueberries on a branch

I love this farm. I can't believe there aren't other Yelp reviews. It must be the remote location near Smith Mt Lake. The farm is easy to find off of White House Road. Parking is right by the field. Wear shoes that are suitable for walking through a field. I like garden crocks. The land is a bit uneven so be careful as you walk through the nicely manicured fields. When you enter the barn area, you may be greeted by an Emu or family of chickens in the enclosed area. Buckets are supplied by the owners but I suggest bringing a plastic container to put the blueberries in after you pick them. There are 15 varieties of blueberries here. The smaller berries are more tart. The larger berries are sweeter. The ere are also blackberries. The berries are $4.00 a pound. A full bucket is approximately $16 worth of berries. They are excellent. There is an outhouse on the property and handicapped parking is available. The land is beautiful. It is a nice departure from the city.

Morris Orchards - Morris Orchard

Morris Orchards

We drove two hours there, spent almost two hours enjoying the 80 degree weather in late October and…read moreexploring the orchard, then drove two hours back. The location was beautiful. Keep your camera handy! Pumpkins are large and $0.60/lb. Apples are $20 peck bag and $30 1/2 bushel bag. Picked pink ladies. Also had Arkansas black and gold rush. I suggest long clothes and bug spray...lots of flies, bees, ladybugs, other insects, and burs. Definitely full of nature. Our six year old complained of bug bites often. Adults were bit a few times but no marks or anything. The driveway was one lane leading to some stressful situations with speeders. There wasn't much information available about picking options, locations, etc., when we arrived. When we advised it was our first time and inquired about information, we got a basic 'these are the apple bag sizes and costs, pumpkins are down the road'. Other locations were very welcoming and informative. Who owned the farm. How long it had been there. How they grew their produce and stayed focused on quality and community, etc. But I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that under normal circumstances, i.e., not in a pandemic, there would be more information, more staff, and possibly other activities. There weren't any apple picking tools, so we couldn't reach many of the best looking apples. We sat on the tailgate and ate our warm donuts. There weren't any tables, chairs or other snacks or food. Not sure if it's picnic friendly. Didn't see an apple washing station. There is a portable sink next to the portable toilets. Other than apples, pumpkins, and the store, there were some bunnies, billy goats, and donkeys with a $0.25 feed dispenser. Our LO always loves feeding the animals. They did not sell bottled water, and the hike up the hill to the pink ladies left us panting, so be sure to bring some! We enjoyed the time we spent simply picking apples and pumpkins, but our six year old asked repeatedly about other things to do.. The other small family farms we visited with hay bales to climb on, corn to play in, apple toss games, pumpkin painting, etc might have spoiled him a little. But he was content for almost two hours with just picking apples and pumpkins and an apple cider slushy. He was so excited he found a big pumpkin that he said it was the best pumpkin patch ever! It's a beautiful location for PYO APPLES AND PUMPKINS, which was hard to find. They also aren't charging any entry fees. If simply PYO is what you seek, you've found it. This may not be the place for a half day/all day family fall outing and picnic (at least not in 2020) but you could add in Skyline Drive or Natural Bridge or other areas activities to make a day of it. IMHO, try everything once, twice if you like it! I can't wait to read your reviews.

If you've had any of the blueberry, blackberry, or peach jam, or apple butter or apple sauce or apple cider jelly from me, well, this is where I get the fruit. The folks at the orchard are super helpful, and they have a good memory with regard to their customers and their preferences. And it's a sweet little place, too -- the views while picking fruit are just gorgeous. And the store carries preserves and other items, including fresh-pressed cider which is delicious. I cannot recommend them highly enough. And after you've spent a morning picking berries or picking up bushels of apples, swing by Woodruff's for a piece of pie on the way home. I tend to think of these two places in tandem, they've become that much of a habit for me.

My wife and I just completed our second trip down to the Spring Grove Farm. We liked it so much…read morethe first time 6 months ago we decided to give them a 2 night stay this time. This place is great, you can spend HOURS just looking through each of their rooms. We have been lucky and been the only people staying there both trips down (damn economy). The Sayers are awesome hosts and give you free reign of the house to explore as you want. The grounds are just beautiful. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quaint B&B in So VA. However do NOT use google maps to get here, print out the directions off of their website! And ask for the blueberry waffles for breakfast!

We visited for one night in the dogwood cottage recently. It was a great cottage. The only…read moreproblem we had was with the smell on the first floor. The smell was like a concentrated version of a camp smell - musty and overbearing. We would not stay in the cottage again, but we would definitely stay in the main hotel. What a place. It wasn't clear where to enter. I went to what I thought was the entrance and the door was locked. I tried at another entrance in the middle and the door was locked. I went around to the northern side and five dogs came up to greet me all barking like they were going to chomp on me. I was starting to get worried about the place. Anyway, they didn't bite, but I didn't like the feeling of whether they would bite me or not while walking in to a side entrance that didn't even look like an entrance and trying to figure out how to check-in. I think the entrance/check-in needs some tightening up because our stay was great. They were very nice people, friendly and all. Great breakfast. Lot's of books. Oh and there is no TV in the dogwood cottage, but I knew that going in and it didn't bother me, but if you're addicted to TV the dogwood cottage is definitely not for you. Lot's of books and we were loaned a collection set of the civil war that was excellent for our evening perusal prior to retiring for the night. I definitely recommend this place and agree that you can't follow Google maps or you will end up somewhere, but not near the hotel. We would visit again, but not staying in that dogwood cottage, which by the way has the original floor they said back when it was a one-story building where they stored corn, husks and all to feed the animals on the farm I think they said. Probably why that smell on the first floor although it was fine on the second floor where the bedroom was, which by the way was very nice. So definitely plan to stay here if you are visiting Appomattox! =)
