The first time I went to Buffet Star was with a group of people for a hen do. We were shown to a large table which was just right for us. The decor at Buffet Star is very lavish and looks new. The chairs and tables are well set out, having areas for small tables and rows of larger tables for groups like ours. The food is very tasty looking and is replenished at regular intervals. I'm not a very adventurous person but give me a plate full of crispy duck and I'm very happy. The staff are very friendly and make you feel welcome. Buffet Star is a great place to go either during the week or on a Sunday as the prices are cheaper than on a Friday and Saturday. Saying that, it's still cheaper than your average Chinese restaurant, at around £9 for an all-you-can-eat buffet. I strongly recommend going in the early evening, around 6pm just as the dinner buffet starts as the food is fresh. Later in the evening, it does seem like the food has been sat there all night and has dried up. A no-nonsense, all you can eat Chinese restaurant. I'm a fan, because with Chinese food, I never know what to pick, and always end up giving in and going for sweet and sour chicken or crispy duck pancakes. Pretty standard. However, at a buffet like this, you can have a little bit of everything and go back as many times as you like. Being the only girl in our group when I went, I was the one who suggested a strategy for maximum food intake - don't get more than two scoops/spoonfuls of anything and if you've never tried something, only get one of them until you know you like it. You see, after being on many faddy diets I am well aware that the majority of people feel compelled to finish everything on their plates, regardless of whether they really want it. And this is the danger with buffets - you pile your plate with favourites and leave no room for anything else. My strategy was a good one. We each had two ladles of soup with prawn crackers, and then two crab claws, sesame toasts, etc. It was about an hour until we were so full we couldn't move. This is a place that saw the better elements of fine dining- savouring your meals, robust conversation with chums, high prices, any semblance of order- and pruned them all away to leave something that may not be classy, but sure is functional. You come in, grab as much food as you can, stuff it in your mouth, then pay the cheque and leave. The ideal dining experience. The downsides are as numerous as the choice of meals. Spending a whole night watching people frenetically scoop mountains of food into their faces wouldn't be very romantic or pleasurable and no matter how hard you try not to, you can't help but enter into the competitive element that crackles through the air. I had to keep reminding myself that nobody was stood by me with a stopwatch and clipboard. Slow down, dipstick. Buffet Star is better suited to the scenario of being hungry but not wanting to make a night of it. I've never really understood All-you-can-eat buffets, mostly because I really am not a fan of being so full I can't move, and yet feeling compelled to eat more because, damn it you've paid good money! However, Buffet Star is a good example of getting your moneys worth, with over 60 dishes you definitely have your pick of the bunch, although there are some dubious looking ones... the usual debate ensues of the kind of meat you're actually eating... but that said, the surroundings are pleasant and it'll definitely have you going back for more. Buffet star is the best chinese buffet in Liverpool I think! The restaurant area is clean and modernised and it has quite a nice atmosphere. The food is nice, but as someone above said, not so good for vegetarians. I don't go that often because one of my friend's is a veggie and prefers others, but for meat eating parties it's good! read more

this is an all you can eat chinese buffet that is designed to cater on a large scale. the seating area extends far back, and the actual food area is quite large, offering so many different dishes. thsi seems to have been designed for the westerner, rather than bringing a bit of traditionalism to it, as many of the dishes are meat based. not great for a vegetarian like me that loves her chinese food. when i went, drinks were 2-4-1, which was goood, and made up for the expense of the place. after a certain time, the price increases. as we went quite late on in the evening, we paid over £12 per person to eat. which wsnt very good value for money as some people only ate one plate of food. even though we arrived late on, and were the last party in the restaurant, we could have done without having the place cleaned and mopped around us. it made us feel unwelcome, and like we were being rushed. overall, this wasnt the greatest dining experience, and i am loathe to go back. read more

we've walked past this place in the centre of town lots of times, mainly I suppose because it doesn't look great from the outside at ground level. however I'm so glad we investigated a little further. the downstairs is a spacious, clean and inviting restaurant offering an all-you-can-eat buffet with many, many chinese and thai dishes. we paid around £7 each for the buffet itself and the bottles of lager were two for one (chinese beer which wasn't half bad!) at somewhere around £2-£3. prices are different depending on the day you go (friday's being slightly more expensive) and the time (before 6pm being the lunch price we paid, after being a slighly more expensive dinner price) the food was really really good with all the usual suspects plus a few others. there's also a salad counter and a desserts counter to finish you off! the restaurant staff were friendly and attentive, cleaning your empty plates away as you went to get more. they told me they've been there 4 years and all I can say is I wish I'd discovered them years ago! read more
