The concert on November "Clouds in my Coffee". Three women, and one man for one song, sang and celebrated the songs of Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell. It was a fabulous concert. The vocalists sang separately and together, making the songs of these three women come alive. I don't know if could have been any better if the original artists had been there to sing their own songs. Morgan James, Shayna Steele and Bryohna Marie sang their hearts out. The conductor, Ted Sperling joined in on one song; he also played the piano! read more

A friend & I have a mini season pass for the BPO. With this package you are able to choose any 6 performances during the season. We have had conflicts in the past and they are really accommodating with changing to another show. At Saturdays performance we seen Showstopping pops. It included Jay Dref & Michele Ragusa both Buffalo natives performing along with the BPO. The music was all from Broadway shows and Jay Dref also sang Evermore from Beauty and the Beast (my favorite stage play) that was not included in the program. Always an enjoyable evening. I lost count of the standing ovations at the show. If you think you have never heard Jay Dref sing you may be mistaken. He sang the National Anthem at the Bills/Saints game on the following day. read more

As a volunteer usher for the BPO, I'm privileged to attend several concerts a year. They're back at Kleinhans, in person; yea! All musicians, except those playing wind instruments, wear a mask, as does the conductor. Everyone who enters must show proof of vaccination and wear a mask. Both protocols are enforced, so if you have any concerns, feel reassured. Yesterday evening's concert was so relaxing; just what I needed! Check their schedule at BPO.org, and treat yourself to either a classical or a pops concert, or both! The old days of having to "dress" to go to a concert are long past; some folks dress up, some seem to have come from doing a day's chores, and there's everything in between. If you're home-bound for any reason, even if you're not, check out their free online BPO Out of the Box performances where they perform in a local historic venue. This was my first time seeing the BPO in all its glory as an adult. In high school, I attended an event and I didn't remember it much. I absolutely love it. I have such a love of all music and its composition, as I played the clarinet for 10 years. My friend and I attended the BPO Holiday Pops. The evening was magical and the songs chosen were absolutely fantastic. There was something for everyone played. I really enjoyed the evening and I can't wait to get back to Kleinhan's to listen to the BPO again. It is so awesome that we have such a fantastic orchestra in our city. read more

This is the preeminent venue in Western new York to hear classical music at its finest. When I moved here from New York City back in 1984, I was troubled by the fact that Buffalo has only one Philharmonic Orchestra and not dozens like the Big Apple. I needn't have worried. TBuffalo Philharmonic is more than enough. They are superb and worthy of a write up in and of themselves. This Yelp post is about the Kleinhans music hall, a national historic landmark and celebrating its 80th birthday. The acoustics are near perfect. I have sat in the front, in the back, in the balcony, left center and right, and my auditory experience has been very satisfying. The delicate piccolos to the mighty tubas and kettles all have their fair say in this gem of an auditorium. read more

The BPO is a real gem in Buffalo. What a great orchestra! Whether you go for the classic, the pops or the kids concerts, you will not be disappointed. Last night we attended the "Bolero!" concert. The opening piece did not really do it for me. The second part was a concerto for cello and orchestra. The soloist was the principal cello player from the BPO. We saw him, with his son, performing at the classical Christmas concert. That was excellent and this time was equally great. After the intermission we had "Iberia" by Debussy and my personal favorite: Bolero by Ravel. The drummer especially did a great job. He killed it with that beat that makes the Bolero the Bolero. The only thing missing was Bo Derek :-) As said, no matter your musical preference, the BPO has a couple of shows for you in their program. read more

Recently came to Khleinhan's for a show with the BPO and the music of Pink Floyd and the Machine. What a wonderful performance!!! I have seen them previously perform with the music of the Doors and felt the same about the whole experience. At both shows they had laser lights going as they performed, which really added to the whole experience. There really isnt a bad seat in the house, but I prefer the lower balcony seats so I don't miss a thing happening on stage. Also to note... if you sat in the floor seating area I just feel like you wouldn't be able to take in the full effect of the laser lights. I would HIGHLY recommend! read more

My wife bought tickets for my birthday to the BPO plays Led Zeppelin last night, and it was well worth the drive through the snow. Randy Jackson from Zebra was the vocalist, and did a great job. The orchestra was superb. Kleinhan's Music Hall is one of Buffalo's architectural treasures. I thoroughly enjoyed the night and am looking forward to doing some more of these in the future. read more

We are extremely lucky to have such an awesome orchestra right here in our city! Every person in this city and it's surrounding area should hear them at least once in their lives. They not only perform classical music but during the year have many other music styles, something for everyone! If you can't afford a concert, try the free ones offered at many parks across the region. You are sure to have a favorable surprise. As someone employed by the BPO (in sales/subscriptions) I have to say I am completely happy working for this great organization. Joann Faletta and the other music organizers really are responsive to what the audience wants and we're lucky to have such an awesome conductor. I am not as big of a pops fan as a classical fan, but Robert Franz our pops conductor is really funny, and has the perfect demeanor to conduct most of the family series concerts. This year I even went to concerts I had to pay for like the Video Games Live! Performance, which was AMAZING. Also, I got to experience a lot more classical concerts then your average 20 something usually does. I have to say, like all good music classical is much better live. Since working for the BPO I've fallen in love, and I can say no matter where I live I will be a classical fan, and hope that I always am somewere with as talented an orchestra as Buffalo has. read more

Thank you BPO for your $30 season passes for students! Not all classical shows are included in the package -- like Joshua Bell in March -- but that won't deter me from spending a measly $10 for additional shows. Find me another big city philharmonic that encourages the youth to consistently attend with Rust Belt prices. Because the computer system was down at Kleinhans last night, my friend and I eased ourselves into seats that were 7th row center with the older crowd of season ticket holders. The BPO is a world-class musical institution in a clearly evolving metropolis, Buffalo. I was entreated to a lively, moving night with great citizens of a great city, a wonderful music director in JoAnn Falletta and a solo guest performer, Joyce Yang, pianist. Fantastic evening with BPO and sponsor M&T Bank. The Kleinhans Music Hall, incredible acoustics, is a living piece of history by Eero Saarinen and Eliel Saarinen, who brought us the TWA Terminal at JFK. The Hall is a mere excuse to go and listen to BPO. In a city bursting with artistic endeavors and the finest of cultural experiences, BPO is a jewel in the Queen City's crown. (Slight but Awesome Dude-like Aside: The terminal, now owned by Jet Blue and in restoration for future use as restaurant and hotel space from what I was told, was open ironically this same weekend I "discovered" Kleinhans Hall. I even had the opportunity to share my limited knowledge base with NYC architects at the TWA Terminal and teach them something - go figure.) Shuffle off to Buffalo. Today! read more

Saturday night's concert was a 20th century Russian music extravaganza of soloists with Fabio Bidini raising the level for the rest. The concert opened with selections from Dimitry Shostakovich's Gadfly Suite, which was music originally composed for the 1955 film, The Gadfly. Conductor JoAnn Falletta chose 4 movements from the suite, which proved a satisfying opening for the Gala event. Notable was the 'Romance' movement featuring an extended violin solo by BPO concertmaster Michael Ludwig. Ludwig's playing was first rate and was an exquisite preview of more to come. The compositional material was reminiscent of other fanfare style Shostakovich works, notably his well known Festival Overture. The Shostakovich composition was followed by a performance of Igor Stravinsky's Divertimento from The Fairy's Kiss. The work has a Tchaikovsky sounding series of inner movements featuring solos performed by (among others) the orchestra's principal cellist, Roman Mekinulov and guest principal horn Michael Winter, both whom played with great command and musical expression of their solo material. Falletta and the orchestra captured the satirical quality of the Stravinsky work and was a satisfying conclusion to the end of the first half. The concert was capped by an exemplar second half performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, by Italian pianist Fabio Bidini. The ultra romantic styled work featured Bidini in several extended cadenza moments where he filled the Kleinhans music hall with sound and emotion on a level that reminds us why the art of music is still one of the most revered inventions of mankind. Massive dynamic range and control served Mr. Bidini's expressive whims in a work that called for great power as well as introspection. It was quite rewarding to witness a live performance of a musician that has such a high degree of mastery in his art. Concert review, 5 stars. I have seen the BPO perform many times and it's one of my favorite things to do. Although they are technically an orchestra, you can find something for everyone here. Everything from classical, to David Bowie, to Pops, kids events, you name it. You can order a "pack" of tickets that allows you to see 3 or more shows at discounted prices. It's a great way to get out and do something different, all while supporting the arts in Buffalo. Their performance of the new world symphony was outstanding, though they could have been more aggressive in the last movement. They pale in comparison to the Cleveland orchestra. That said, faletta is a boss who knows how to bring in phenomenal guest stars. Just get to kleinhans and write your own review. read more
