What a cool place. When visiting I have driven passed it a hundred times and finally while out on a ride with my brother I asked if we could stop. So many interesting animals (taxidermy) to look at in the nature center. I purchased a hat for only $15. Everywhere else they were $25 and up. I did not go on the trail so I can't tell you anything about it. There is plenty of parking but the sign makes it a little confusing on when and where you can park. I have to say Sandy who was on staff was so knowledgeable and interesting to speak with. She has a wealth of information and is very nice. There's a little nature center building here and a small lake/lagoon you can walk around. The walk is completely flat and all of 1/4 mile. The trail is a loop. I can't rate the nature center because it was closed. The door was open and there were people inside, and it was during "open" hours, but they told me it was closed. So it goes. The walk around the lake is pleasant enough but very short. You'll probably see some interesting birds. Free parking in the small lot. read more

Buena Vista autobahn is a beautiful place to learn about birds and other local animals while exploring the expansive lagoon the people there are very friendly and offer a lot of explanation about birds and other animals. I highly recommend bringing your bring your children or guest from out of town or just come on your own and have a nice walk and meditation under the Torrey Pines read more

A quick and free educational experience in south Oceanside. The entire trip ( visitor center + hike ) will take you less than an hour to complete. Inside the center are several animal exhibits "taxidermied" of the local birds of the area. In the meeting room there are many touch-exhibits that are quite fun for the kids. There's also a small loop hike attached to this center's parking lot ( less than a mile) that goes through the Buena Vista Lagoon. Probably not a good hike after a long rain. Tip - At the front of the parking lot there is a green algae pond and if you're very quiet you can see turtles. read more

We had so much fun here! It was a nice little trail to walk around, and the pond looked old and crusty. Beware- there are a ton of mosquitos because it's marshy out there. But this place does its best to preserve what is left of this area from more roads and homes. The man that worked in there was really nice and gave us a lot of historical stories and facts about the area. Great taxidermy exhibit as well! read more

This is the Buena Vista Lagoon and Visitor center. Big parking lot for visitors. The visitor center often has activities for kids. It also has lots of taxidermy animals. The gift shop of the visitor center is lame as hell though. I wish they had cool stuff but they have terrible t shirts and cheap stuff I wouldn't want to remember. The people who work here, probably volunteers, are wonderful and knowledgeable. As far as the lagoon, the city just won a huge grant to remove the reeds and build a bridge up for when it rains and floods. For now, it's a quick walk that is partially dirt and wood. Cute and easy with some lookout points. I like to stop by and read about the local wildlife and see them too. read more

The trail was great! A little mushy for littles trying to walk. A little narrow for a stroller. So many caterpillars though! We saw a lot of tadpoles too. The Nature Center was eager to get us in and show the kids around BUT told the adults that kids needed to wear masks... That is unfortunate. They weren't allowed to learn about native species and how to protect them. Instead they learned to fear others. They learned others are afraid of them. They learned to be ashamed of their bodies; their healthy bodies are not good enough. They learned that to get what they want they need to do with their bodies what someone else wants, to please them (big yikes). It is because of science, because of numbers and data that I don't fear for me or my kids. I am more afraid of an animal attack, kidnapping, getting hit by a car, meningitis or Lyme Disease, which are all more likely to do greater harm. I don't, however, live fearfully or encourage it in them, because that would be damaging psychologically, emotionally. But the trail was great! read more

Free nature trail with a visitor's center. There's a s private parking lot at the visitor's center and a single loop trail that takes about 10 minutes to complete. Along the way, there are some educational placards and plant identification tags. The loop takes you on a boardwalk through the marshy lagoon, which is pretty neat. read more

Horrible nature walk trail here. The trail isn't very well maintained and you have to fight your way through overgrowth and make contact with what could be dangerous plants and/or bugs. I say this because I was bitten by some strange bugs or made contact with some poisonous plant because I had swelling spots and allergic reaction almost right away on parts of my body that made contact with the overgrowth. Avoid going to this place. It's a shame they left it in such shambles! read more

This place is actually pretty neat, its a nice little loop walk around the lagoon that they have there. Unfortunately the visitor center was closed for upgrades, they are upgrading the roof and front walls. The parking lot was closed, but still managed to park out front and get a walk around. The walkways aren't really maintained, they are hard to walk down, but its a beautiful walk. read more

Buena Vista is a fine, workmanlike Audubon chapter. On the upside, BV has claim to a couple of local birding treasures in the form of Tom Troy (leader of free, no-reservation beginning birding classes the last Saturday of most months (check the website)), and Terry Hunefeld (SoCal pelagic birding guru). On the downside, BV Audubon could be doing much more with respect to weekly bird outings. One or two off-lagoon outings per month is simply sub-par for a chapter that rules this much territory. BV Audubon could also be doing more with the extraordinary back-yard asset it has in Buena Vista Lagoon - the only substantial freshwater (even if artificially so) seaside lagoon in Southern California. Sure, the nature center is nice enough. But aside from a couple muddy trails behind the nature center, there really isn't much access at all to the lagoon proper. Fleeting glimpses from I-5 at 70 mph (or increasingly, 10 mph) are more the rule. How would I fix that? Glad you asked! Recognizing that people will only care about Buena Vista Lagoon if they feel connected to it: 1. Lobby DFG to restore and re-open "The Landing" off Jefferson Street east of I-5 (directly across from Hosp Grove Park). The story is that DFG closed this public-use area because people insisted on feeding the wild ducks. But with all due respect, that's absurd. If someone wants to feed ducks, they can do so any day of the week across the same pool at the fishing/homeless beach off Vista Way. They could also feed ducks at the fishing bridge on Coast Hwy near the nature center if they were so inclined. Indeed, with all the rushes and cattails that have filled in around the pool at The Landing, this would be about the hardest place to feed ducks anywhere on the lagoon. And there's little doubt that if BV Audubon put out the call, lots of chapter members would happily pitch in a few hours monthly to keep up the facility. 2. Focus Chapter dues and fund-raising on construction of a boardwalk/trail system that would provide close-up access to most or all of the lagoon. Aside from seeing the lagoon when driving by on I-5, it's darn near impossible to see much of the lagoon up-close and personal. And while we have no shortage of 5K-run and street fair road closures, Carlsbad Village has a severe walking path deficiency. (The Hosp Grove trails do not at all relate to the extraordinary water resources we have here, and are also fairly sterile when it comes to the kind of birds and wildlife that live on and visit the lagoon daily.) We love this place! Staff is very friendly and actually go out of their way to make kids curious about the different things they can learn about at the center. There are so many things for kids to explore-- when kids can touch and feel things (feathers, snakeskin, animal bones), you know a place is kid-friendly. The microscope station is awesome, too. Binoculars are available on the upper observation deck for visitors to use for bird watching. read more

We stopped by yesterday afternoon with our 4-year-old granddaughter. She had been apprehensive, but was quickly at ease because of the interesting exhibits. All animals inside (excepting the tarantula in the terrarium) are no longer alive, but have been professionally and realistically exhibited. The room on the right of the entrance contains items that can be touched and also contains a projection microscope that visitors can use. Joan was the volunteer on duty and knew how to interact well with both children and adults. She was informative and soon had our shy granddaughter talking a lot. A great place to visit! read more

this place is my new backyard, which is awesome. the new hubby and i recently moved into the condos next door. we just walked the little trail for the first time the other day. the loop is fully walkable now, although still boggy where there is still no bridge so wear sneakers that you don't mind getting muddy. imagine our surprise when we came across our cat enjoying a stroll too. needless to say, he is sure happy with our move. don't worry, he's not quite ferocious enough to snag any cool or endangered birds. read more
