It's known as "the Exchange" or "Redstone Arsenal Exchange Services," or "Army and Air Force Exchange." It's open Monday through Friday 6 AM to 6 PM and closed on the weekends. It's sort of a one stop shop as it's a gas station, convenience store with a small liquor store (must have Military ID to purchase liquor, beer, wine, etc.), and smaller versions (versus the regular sized stores) of both Burger King and Subway. Unlike the Express with Class Six on Action Drive, the selection of liquors at the AAFES Express is much smaller and I've never seen the AAFES Express host an event like an on site wine retailer. I've eaten at both the Burger King and Subway, which can get really crowded, and purchased a few items at the convenience store. In the past I've purchased gas here, too. It's nice, in a pinch, to be able to pop over to the AAFES Express and get a sub sandwich or something from Burger King if you forgot your lunch and/or missed the cafeteria operating hours in your building.

I visited their current location on Wellman Ave., next to the laundromat last week, and was greeted by two of the friendliest young ladies on the planet as well as an even friendlier regular customer who was picking up some items and chatting away with me. The store has cute kitchen towels with sayings on them that would be fun gifts, various jams/spreads/jellies that looked to be unique specialty labels [not the stuff you find in Kroger], some lovely tableware such as ceramic serving plates and bowls, serving pieces, and drinkware, a tightly curated wine selection with maybe 4 selections, a reach in cooler in the back with various "take and bake" selections that I didn't take the time to peruse. From their website I learned they will create gift baskets for you; the offer a wedding registry with absolutely lovely items from which to select; baby registries; gift cards. To sum it up - this cozy shop packs a big punch! Through their website they offer 6,634 gifts and products from 32 designers and brands! Wow, that's a lot! they offer all price ranges from $10.00 shot glasses to $3,500.00 for a 96 x 24-inch triptych by Nicolette Mayer. I understand their meal offerings better since visiting their website! I was especially happy to see the offer a Thanksgiving meal option, which is so nice that time of year! I miss the "take and reheat" option Pauli's used to offer! I'm hopeful Walker's will be just as delicious! They offer dishes from 3 unique caterers on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. Tuesday is "Catering by Narvell" and the offerings are: rotini bake, shrimp salad, chicken pasta salad and sides of lima beans and marinated tomatoes. Wednesday is "Little Dipper Cafe," and their offerings are the following sandwiches: pimento cheese, egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad. Also, cobb salad with ranch, strawberry feta almond salad and the following entrees: chicken pesto casserole beef stroganoff, ham and gouda sliders, BBQ port sliders, and southwest quiche. It's two stories, and well curated, with very well-organized displays. Ulysses Grant White founded this store as the U.G. White Hardware and Implement Company in 1917 - Wow! That's been a minute! Displays boast a variety of candies and sweets; fresh coffee; a small selection of items from 1818 Farms (sister's favorite lip gloss, beautiful kitchen towels, botanical wax sachets); jams, salsas, relishes, and fruit butters; candles; Lodge cast iron cookware; Case knives; old fashioned children's toys; clothing (socks, SPF hats, shirts); mugs and more! My adult son is immuno-compromised, and as such he wears a mask everywhere he goes. His partner also wears one so they don't get sick and give it to him. When we got into the store we split up. Unknown to me at the time time, the store staff was overheard talking about them saying things like ... you don't wear a mask because you're smart." They were also treated so poorly being stared at like they were subhumans. I wish I had known it at that time or I would have left without making my purchase. I noticed the typically friendly staff wasn't making eye contact or being friendly with me as they had done in the past. Even the kid at the register was being combative when I corrected him that the price on the bag was cheaper than what it rang up as. I calmly and politely explained to him that it's illegal to charge someone a higher price than what it's marked, and when he argued with me I told him that they should fix it immediately because they could get sued for that. A manager lady came over and fixed it (an older lady with white hair.) By that time my son and partner had already left the store because they were shunned and made to feel uncomfortable. This was Saturday, August 19th in the early afternoon. I'm leaving this review because I genuinely hope that the owner of the store reads it and cares enough about their business to reprimand these employees and the white-haired lady who was obviously in charge. Because money is money and you shouldn't treat customers that way. Literally perpetuating negative stereotypes about ignorant Southerners, and embarrassing yourselves. So if you don't economically survive, I won't be surprised, because maybe other people have been treated this way too and they won't be coming back either. Life is too short for bigots to thrive, and it's unchristian of you to do so.
