AVIS and Budget are at the same location on Main Street, fyi.
Absolutely the worst car rental experience ever! DO NOT USE! I travel a lot and often rent a vehicle to keep miles off my personal vehicles. After renting with NO problems from another rental company down the street for years, I went on Costco Travel to give this one a try.
The price was right so I said, Ok, I will give it a shot. Wrong move....The first time I rented from here, the young lady who worked the front was VERY nice and professional. Got me in and out with a vehicle. Shortly after taking the vehicle, I noticed a large nail in one of the tires, took it back and got another vehicle right away, no problem.
Last week, I figured I would try them again. Got a new model hybrid vehicle this time. The gentleman who checked me out with the vehicle was friendly and nice.
I got the vehicle because I had to leave at 4 30 in the morning to go to a cold region about 5 hours away. When I got up the next morning , it was 28 degrees and the. vehicle would not start. Full of gas, loaded with luggage, nothing!! Realizing I was on a tight schedule and had. to leave, I threw my stuff in my truck and then tried to start. the rental again. This time it started, then cut off. You cannot jump start a hybrid vehicle like a regular car. You are pretty much at the vehicle's mercy.
The vehicle was blocking my truck so I had to wait for it to start again before I could go. I definitely didn't trust it to make the trip to colder weather, so I left the key at my house for my family to give back to an AVIS rep.
I contacted AVIS/BUDGET later that day and spoke to an employee who advised me to contact AVIS roadside service. No apologies, nothing....I then contacted AVIS main line(Roadside Service) and the agent, Ashland, was very nice, apologized and asked if I wanted another vehicle. I explained that I was at my destination in my own vehicle, but appreciated the offer. I was told the vehicle would be picked up and taken to Baltimore for further inspection.
Within 2 hours, it was picked up and taken away.
I researched HYBRID vehicles and found out that they SUCK in cold weather and start sporadically in COLD WEATHER. Their batteries come into question.
Why would Avis have these vehicles in their fleet without THOROUGHLY checking them out? Just rent them in the warmer months if you must rent them. Better yet, do the required service on them. I filled the windshield wiper fluid with almost a whole bottle myself. (Due diligence during my pre-trip check at my house.
This could have ended way worse, if I'd been stranded somewhere as a senior citizen or had small kids with me.
Not good at all. I will be notifying Costco about my experience here as well...hopefully, they will remove them from their travel page.
This place will NEVER see me again. I am telling all my friends and family NOT to go here under any circumstances. read more
