Octopus Garden Preschool - Kids "live streaming" on the west playground! LOL (we have four, age-appropriate playgrounds)

Octopus Garden Preschool

The very first morning we dropped off our oldest son at The Octopus Garden, I was sad getting into…read moremy car, that mommy feeling of longing for her child. Another dad, getting into his car, recognized my feelings and reassured me with a smile and "Don't worry. Pretty soon it will feel like family!" He was right. The Octopus Garden has become all three of my children's home-away-from-home. They feel safe. They are loved. They learn. They have good friends. It's a preschool where manners and kindness are taught along with the ABCs and 123s. It is a very special place, a place that is governed by Love. Now when I drop my kids off at The Octopus Garden, they run in happy! They are greeted with smiles and hugs and everyone is eager to begin the day. Each week they are introduced to new concepts, books, activities and are fed healthy meals. The dedicated teachers at The Octopus Garden have become our true allies in parenting. They are our friends and they do indeed feel like our family. My husband and I are comforted with the knowledge that our kids are being provided with the same care and kindness that we provide in our home. We feel so blessed to have The Octopus Garden as our preschool!

Not great. The school's website and staff appeared to misrepresent what the school's strengths and…read moreweaknesses were. The website says they have won awards for being good with kids who have special needs - they were not good with my son, who was just diagnosed with ADHD. The parent manual says they work with parents if kids have trouble in the classroom. They did not work with us, although the director did tell me that they worked with another child for a year until he went to kindergarten and ended up bringing a knife to kindergarten. It seemed like they favor kids who have been there for a long time or whose parents they know, I'm not sure. They did not appear willing to work with our son's therapist to develop a plan for our son, either. The director told us, "sticker charts don't work." I also didn't feel like they did much "teaching." My son did not do one worksheet during his time here. I did not see any educational work coming home. The children in his class seemed to bully a lot for such young kids. They called our son a cry baby and made fun of him for calling his mom "mama." The teacher is very experienced, but she appeared to be worn out or overwhelmed. The facilities are inviting but seem crowded and less than pristine. On the positive side, I will say that my son had fun with a lot of the activities they did, such as the summer luau. The director is pretty good at communicating with parents, even though I felt that she was either biased or dishonest in her communications with me. Bottom line? If your child is a fairly easy kid, and you aren't too focused on your child getting the best educational environment you can find, this school might work for you. If your kid is hyper or challenging like mine, this might not be your first choice.

My son who is 3 years old, has been enrolled with Tzu Chi since Summer of 2014…read more We had previously enrolled him with other preschool [not naming names, but considered as one of the posh/exuberant tuition preschools], and was not happy with the ongoing turnover of the teachers and officers. Our relative told us about Tzu Chi, and after much consideration, we have decided to try them out. Truly what made the biggest difference, is that this place is as with how it's named, the people there genuinely care and show great deal of love and dedication. For the past year, I have not seen any turnover, and the teachers are amazing. We have Mrs Chang and Ms Julie and they are both the most caring and loving individuals. Sometimes I feel guilty for how much feedback they give me on what to work on with my child, that I ponder who is the one that actually truly have my child's best interest, me or his teachers... It pressures me to put just as much effort and dedication to the wellness of my child. The way how their curriculum works is that they have 2 days that they focus fully English, and 2 days that they focus fully Chinese, and then 1 day that is half and half. The emphasis of their learnings is not only on the educational aspects of things, but also showing respect, humidity, and appreciation. They have lots of hands on activities, such as - they had the kids make cookies and then they do fundraising events [cookie sales] to help with ie. the Nepal earthquakes and such. If you are not familiar with Tzu Chi, it's a large organization that does a lot of humanitarian work, and their teachings evolve around giving back, helping others... My son loves going to school, and love the food there [a lot more than my own cooking]. The director Mrs. Lin is wonderful and very attentive. All and all, I feel very fortunate to have my son here. I truly feel that he is set up for success, and I would highly recommend them to anyone seeking childcare.

The entire staff truly make it feel personal, they always know our names and our child's name, and it feels like everyone knows everybody. They have a strong system in place and consistently follow it, which gives us a lot of confidence in the care and structure they provide. At one point we shared a bit of feedback, and the director stepped in and addressed it almost immediately. That really showed us that parents' voices matter here and that they genuinely care about getting things right. At this stage in our family's life, it has been a great fit for us. Our infant teachers (Mrs shomaker, Ms hail, and Ms banan) have been such a joy! They have loved on our son in a way that's made us feel at ease leaving him each day. They are so communicative with things big and small and it's so appreciated! One of our favorite aspects is the amount and variety of the meals he gets each day. This can be such a stressor, so knowing he's eating so much variety each day without us having to plan or prep any meals is a dream. We were so worried and skeptical to finally put our son in childcare outside of our home and primrose has been the perfect fit for us and we couldn't recommend it enough!

As you can imagine it is not the most ideal (is it ever?) to send a newborn to daycare. They have exceeded my expectations in every way. Every single employee is so pleasant to talk to. Their communication has been seamless. I am not able to physically meet her teachers, but we have had zoom calls and they have an amazing app that they send constant pictures and videos throughout the day. They do such a fantastic job at trying to figure out this whole new norm we are living in. Most importantly you can tell they loveeeeeee the kiddos. Genuinely love and are happy. I toured quite a few daycares and you can tell when employees are not happy. I could ramble on about all the great things, but you get the point. If you're looking for childcare in the area I HIGHLY suggest to check them out!
